...quite possibly my life. The sad truth is that I had been emotionally abusing my wife for years. When she broke the news that she was leaving me, I poured myself into reading and researching everything I could on the topic of verbal and emotional abuse. This book is a major stand out. As many other reviewers have stated, this is one of the only ones on the market that treats the abuser as a damaged human being rather than an irredeemable monster. I was lucky enough to be married to a woman who agreed to give me a chance to change my behavior, she also agreed to read this book with me. Through the exercises and conversations based on the material in the book, we came to a much deeper understanding of what the other was thinking and feeling and began communicating much more effectively. But the biggest breakthrough came when, after reading the chapter on personality disorders, she looked me in the eye and asked "Do you think you have borderline personality disorder?" I didn't want to accept it at first but the more I read, the more convinced I became. I have since been officially diagnosed and undergoing treatment and for the first time ever, I no longer feel like my life is spiraling out of control and toward inevitable... well, let's just say that I probably never would have realized what was going on with me had I not read this book, and the realization most likely saved my life.

After reading Beverly’s book I decided it would be helpful to explore why I had allowed myself to stay in an emotionally abusive marriage for 11 years. I also wanted to know how to deal with my husband until I could divorce him, and how I could heal from this trauma. When I found that Beverly offered therapy by phone I thought I had found the perfect therapist. As you can imagine, I was scared, confused, and my self-esteem was at an all-time low. My husband and I were having serious financial problems and I was facing potentially supporting my mildly special needs child on my own after being out of the work force for 13 years. Many things were said, but I’ll give you some highlights. From our first session, Beverly seemed kind but at the same time slightly irritated with me. It was confusing but I could not understand why on earth she would be irritated with me. Surely I must be misinterpreting. Our third session she blurted out that she never gets irritated with clients but she was irritated with me. I talked too much and got off topic. I didn’t pause long enough after she made a point. She didn’t understand what I wanted from the sessions. During another session, she asked out of the blue if I thought I was beautiful. She was trying to understand where my sense of entitlement was coming from. Another time she insisted on talking at length about why I had not been more successful financially at my previous career. The unspoken conclusion was that I was a failure. That's how we ended the session. She spoke to me like I was a child. I found myself considering staying with my abusive husband after It had taken me a year to muster up the courage to decide to leave and she was slowly chipping away at this. I had anticipatory anxiety before our sessions, afraid of not pausing long enough after she spoke, saying the “wrong” thing. I was anxious and crying a lot. Confused. I was feeling more and more hopeless and losing my willpower. I finally realized what this women was doing to me. She is still very much an abuser and should not have a license to practice.

This book blames the woman for the abuse she receives from her partner. The last thing an abused woman needs is to be told that it is her fault for the abuse, then list ways in which she can change her behavior, in order to stop the abuse. Absurd!

Engel places a lot of blame on the parents, which is not true in my case, and at times she seemed trying to convince me that I was incorrect about that. However, this gave me a lot to consider and good tools to use in my relationships.

This bookChanged my life. I recommended it to many other people and they said the same thing. It blew our minds. This book is one of a kind in that it doesn't assume the abuser is male. If you're teetering on the fence, just buy it.

Imams to point their accusing finger of execution, stonings and beatings to those lower in society - women mainly. Years ago, when we began fighting the Al Quada in Afghanistan, a woman reporter had video of the Muslim men executing blue burka clad women kneeling in a soccer stadium that the UN had built. My heart bled for those poor women. I grieved and prayed that one day they could have the freedoms I have. We have no information on how these women are living now. No news teams to show some good that has come from a long hard war. To know that women couldn't leave the house without a family male escort, educated women, widows, begging in the streets because they weren't allowed to work any longer. The whole country shut down in the worst barbaric way - then spreading the Islamic war to us the FREE WORLD. All for the price of a plane ticket to the USA and points West. I thank Ms. Darwish for her exceptionally brave story, her insight, & for her freedom. All the rules, laws, and abject oppression of women under the barbarism of Islam are strange to us Western women. Nonie Darwish for 30 years of her life, when she grew up in Gaza . Now she has been a Christian living in USA. This book is a must book for anybody in the west to read. She describes the Sharia laws in details and with many quotations from the Koran and the Ahadith of Mohamed. She clearly shows that a Muslim life is a continuous Gihad, mainly to convert infidels (Christians and Jews ) to Islam. This is achieved by killing, paying Gizia (taxis). They can lie, cheat, kill as long as it is for Allah that is acceptable and well documented in Koran and Mohamed's teaching. She believes that the west is wrong to get these people in and believe they follow our constitution. Every thing in the west, clothing, habits is not accepted in Koran. A muslim can have 4 wives, can beat his wife, can divorce his wife by verbally telling her 3 times "you are divorced", he can have sex slaves. So if they follow there religion where all of these are accepted (Mohamed did all of that). So she asks how can that fit with our values. She concludes that Islam is incompatible with our values and constitution. I highly recommend this book to every American , so you can understand we we are dealing with.

Burman knows more about the details of the capital gains tax than anyone I have ever read or listened to. He makes a persuasive argument that capital gains should be taxed at the same level as every other source of income. He gives two main reasons: avoid tax sheltering and keeping the income tax progressive.I would have given it 5 stars, but there'sa major flaw: Labyrinth needs an update. A lot of his charts/graphs come from information in 1993! Since the book's release (1999) there have been several changes to the capital gains tax. Less of capital gains are corporate stock today, as pass-throughs (businesses not subject to the corporate tax) have taken a larger share of business income.There are several of Burman's more recent essays available online, including a recent article in the Wall Street Journal. I suggest interested readers take a careful look at them.

I bought this book (and returned it). Keep in mind, I didn't read it, I just skimmed it over. But I figured others might want to know that there wasn't much in the way of information on how an individual investor should attack his/her taxes. It was a book more focused on the "big picture" of how capital gains taxes effect our economy.Perhaps this book is more suited for an economics student.

This gives an extraordinary review of the current and historical arguments for and against differential capital gains treatment. This book is not intented to help individual investors, but to inform readers on the policy debate. Extremely informative and well written. Should be required reading for anyone interested in taxes or public finance.

I expected a bit more from this book. The charts aboutthe number of kills and how the kills were done seemsout of step with the style of the books. The history ofthe characters was more interesting and should have beena larger part of this book.The other similar book "Nero Wolfe of 35th Street" wasfar more educational and interesting.

There is some things this book is not - it is not meant to explain and summarize each and every story. Its main focus is on the characters, mostly on Nero, Archie and those of the extended detective family. While it lists information about the different stories and events, the author refused to spoil it for you. If you want to know more you HAVE to read the books. The book also shows us the history of Nero Wolfe on the radio, on TV and even on the big screen. It has chapters on both his love of food and on his harem of flowers. It also has a small bio on Rex Stout and tries to trace the life, and loves, of Archie Goodwin. A wonderful book but no replacement for reading the mysteries. Enjoy it like a fine meal.

I'm a hardcore Stout fan. This book was so disappointing. It was more about what the author wanted to include in it versus what might be of interest to a reader or fan. He has silly things like charts of how many people were killed, the manner in which they were killed, and where they were killed.Hardly worth $18 for the pb or the $30 for the hardback.

Enjoyable reading & helps refresh my memories of Nero's cases while tying people & things together in the Nero Wolfe universe!

This is probably the best version of the Gita to share with people, both Hindu and non-Hindu. Sure, it has some problems, as some other reviewers point out, but overall, this is my favorite version of the Gita. Sleek and slender, it is easy to carry around everyone and thankfully lacks the often biased and partisan commentary found in some other versions of the Gita. If you want to go deeper into the Gita and the philosophy of Hinduism, then there are other versions of the book which, as a student interested in religion and religious history, I have read, but those those versions are of a more academic nature. If you want a copy of the Gita to keep by your bedside or table, or to skim through when you're feeling contemplative, then this edition is the one for you. If you want a somewhat annotated but not fully academic version, then the Easwaran and Radhakrishan versions are what I would recommend to you. In any case, this version is excellent because it manages to keep the poetic consistency of the original Gita while doing away with jargon yet without doing away with the meaning, even in a subtle form, of the Gita.Ironically, the Gita is a text more rooted in Vedic Hinduism, Samkhya, and to an extent, Yoga than it is in later traditions such as Vedanta and Vaishnavism, of which it has become an essential text for the latter two. All of these are later debates in Hindu theology which ought to not have any effect on the core and fairly straightfoward meaning of the Gita itself. I often find it more enjoyable to read the Gita when I'm not under that shadow of these later commentaries which in my opinion, over-analyze the Gita. I would like to note that this version is not modified in any way or concepts changed to suit the modern or non-Indian reader. It is merely written in an elegant, simple, jargon free English. Excellent Gita: I highly recommend to both Hindus and non-Hindus.I have one problem with the translation: the Sanskrit word yoga, used extensively throughout the text is consistently translated as "discipline" in English. This can produce a significant distortion and misunderstanding of the meaning of the text.

I recently lost a loved one to pancreatic cancer. For 8+ months I was the primary care giver. My support group for care givers were discussing a particular topic and it was this particular translation by Barbara Miller the facilitator was using as reference.This transcendent story gave me the courage - just trust that Krishna/God/Universe/Creator - (whomever or whatever you want to call your higher being) - to trust that my 'chariot' is being driven by my higher self and relinquish my human self-talk/doubt and have some blind faith in knowing, much like Arjuna's teachings with Lord Krishna - it's predetermined and should our human self should not interfere - there is a master plan and our inner self/soul is the driver of that vehicle.In my case, I delivered care with unconditional love and compassion and now I mourn in the same fashion.This is apparently from all human perspectives, a significant event for my soul's journeyI will still keep this book handy for inspiration as I am left to find a 'new normal' without my loved one.

I bought this for my daughters. It is a good introductory version of the Gita. I have read quite a number of editions, and sadly do not remember which were the most interesting to me and why. This particularly volume is not as rich with respect to imagery as many of the others. I wanted to be careful about how some volumes use artistic liberties in an attempt to teach the reader. The reason is that the dialogue between Arjuna and Krishna can lead one to discover for themselves its allegorical wisdom A process of self discovery. This addition at the very least, does no harm. In a couple places it used the word "individual," in a way in which I suggested that they interpret it as 'ego' instead.

I bought this book for my religions class, and knowing absolutely NOTHING about Hindu cultures, beliefs, traditions, etc. I expected to be absolutely lost when reading this book. However, the translation is very, very clear and really brings this interesting and inspirational story to life. Enjoyed it very much :)

The translation was scholarly yet accessible. The story itself is an examination of the true self and one's place among the Universe. A good introduction to Eastern Religious Philosophy.

An very good contemporary translation but deviates considerably from any classical Indian tradition. No Sanskrit or Sanskrit transliteration, so it is impossible to analyze the relationship between her translation and the original Sanskrit words.

translation is a little stiff and antiquated. much prefer eknath easwaran's which allows certain Sanskrit terms to remain while giving the terms context and definition. additionally his translation is far more fluid and inspiring, in my humble estimation.
