This reminded me of Twilight without the vampires. Sad, unwanted, loner main female lead character. Super cute, unbelievably supportive, loving male lead character. The writing was redundant. Character experiences the same thing over and over and over without ever allowing anyone to help or snapping. I just wanted it to end. Read the preview for book two thinking now it'll move forward and evolve. Nope. I'm out.

I read this book years ago but stumbled upon it in my library and had to come write a review!Reading the blurb immediately brought back all the feels! I have re-read this series maybe twice since reading it initially which alone shows just how good it is. This book is an emotionally tough book as it revolves around mental and physical abuse. Emma Thomas has a dark secret that she desperately tries to keep hidden from everyone around her, so that the perfect facade around her adoptive family isn’t broken. Her only goal is to maintain her perfect GPA and extracurriculars so that she may get a full scholarship to college so that she can escape her personal hell and never look back. That is until a new boy at school Evan Matthews notices her, and refuses to let her go back to being invisible. He literally demolishes her walls and she finds herself unwillingly falling for him while simultaneously trying to shield him from the terrors of her life which is near impossible to do. This books is amazing and hands down one of the best that I have ever read. It will make you cry a lot but the journey you will take with Emma will be all worth it I promise you! It’s so great to see all the amount of positive feedback that this series has gotten in the last few years, when I first read Reason to Breathe it didn’t have that many reviews. But believe me when I say it deserves every positive thing that people from around the world have said about it.For more fun book reviews checkout my blog at obsessivecompulsivereads.com :)

Wow where do I begin? First this is the first book buy this author that I’ve read, and of course won’t be the last. I do have to finish this series lol.So I finished this book at one in the morning with tears that wouldn’t stop. I don’t even know where to start. This gets right to it from the very first page. I don’t know what to say without giving anything away, except that,1. I HATE, H.A.T.E Emma’s aunt, she is the cruelest person ever2. Emma’s uncle is just as bad and messed up to, first of all he lets what happens, happen.3. Sara, Emma’s best friend, and I mean she’s the best. To me there would be know surviving ever if Emma didn’t have her.4. Evan, he’s also the best. He’s the greatest person to ever come along next to Sara. And of course there’s5. Emma, you just cry for her and feel so horrible for all the stuff she goes through and the abuse from her aunt. I don’t even know how she survived as long as she has till now.“You have a night game on Friday, right?” he confirmed as we climbed the stairs. “Yes.” “What are you doing after school, before the game?” “Probably staying at school and doing homework or whatever.” “Do you want to get something to eat?” he asked, hesitating on the landing before opening the double doors leading to the hall. I stopped, and so did my heart. “And yes, this would be a date, so that we’re clear,” he stated with a smirk. I stopped breathing too. “Okay.” I exhaled, still unable to move. I really just agreed to go on a date?!After Mr. Hodges began his lecture on the bones in the hand, I scribbled on a blank piece of paper, Are you already assuming there’s an us? Evan wrote in response, NOT YET. I still didn’t understand what that meant and drew my eyebrows together, so he wrote, I’M GETTING READY FOR WHEN THERE IS.Emma’s aunt is the worst person ever and cruelest and most abusive person towards her. Her dad past away sadly when she was young, and then her mom sadly became unable to care for her and wasn’t exactly the best, so her dads brother and wife became her guardians. To some people you would think that’s a good thing, but for Emma it’s not.Thankfully Emma, had Sara the greatest best friend anyone could ever ask for. Sara could be quite funny at times but really cared truly about Emma. The love they had like sisters was the best. I truly believe if Emma didn’t have her as a friend things would of been a lot worse. I don’t know how many times I was shaking and saying no don’t do it, so afraid that something so bad was going to happen. Or that her aunt was going to find out and it was going to be BAD, really bad. I also keep thinking a saying why doesn’t Sara, or Evan just freakin say something. I was ready to pull my hair out or have a heart attack, if Emma wouldn’t say anything then they should just say something. Again more tears and tears.Sara’s shoulders sank as she slowly lifted her head, revealing the tears streaming down her cheeks. “Emma, you have to tell someone.” Her words sounded desperate and urgent. “If you don’t, then I will.” “No, you won’t,” I snapped, my icy tone that made Sara wince. “What do you mean?” she demanded, even more passionately. “Did you see your back? The blood was seeping through your shirt during the game. Emma, I’m afraid some morning when I pull up to get you, you won’t come out. I care about you, and I can’t watch her do this to you.”Well I felt so much better, when I would be worrying and then nothing would happen, until you get to the last page. Man I’m telling you, that’s just wrong. I mean wrong, ending the way it did. I couldn’t stop the tears and didn’t know what to say.I’m just glad I came across this series that has already been out for a while. I don’t know how I would feel if I had to wait for the next book. I think I would of been such a mess.“Well, let’s get you back to hell before the devil realizes you’re not home.”So like I said it gets right to it from the very beginning, it’s a really good, and written very well, but for some people it might not be easy to read. There is a lot of abuse that you read and go through with Emma, that it can be hard to read.I don’t know what else to say. I can’t say much without giving stuff away, except that I know I’m not waiting another minute to read the 2nd book. If I wait any longer, I think I’ll really lose it, or go crazy. In the balance of love and loss, it was love that made me struggle to… Breathe.

It's the setting of the book. It's because she's only 16, part of the why she's so helpless. We all know she's been abused. But the extent of it was so much I cringed. I'm sure there must be some reasons to explain Carol's behaviors. And the reason Emma stayed and didn't say anything was understandable. But her actions.. I got hooked from the beginning because she was so fierce and strong.. though later on I had to shake my head at her decisions and her actions. It's this feeling that you wish you could reach your arms into the book and shake her or protect her that gives this book a 5 stars. And omg... Evan Matthews... <3
