After reading this, follow it up with her lectures at Harvard (on YouTube) as well as Claudia Rankine's The Racial Imaginary. This is an excellent starting point for a conversation white writers of fiction and poetry need to have with themselves and their perceptions of "the cannon."

Morrison is a master of fiction, of literary criticism, & of the analysis of racially-motivated/biased behavior. This collection of essays reflects each one of the aforementioned skills. Love everything she puts a pen or keyboard stroke to. She is a treasure. This is a resource I come back to over and over again!
A gift for American writers -- the gifts from Ms. Morrison just keep on coming! Thank you, Toni.
Very short book. Pretty good read
To look into the writings of the American fathers of literature and find the shape, the shadow, the otherness of race. It's a good pair of glasses...
Toni Morrison's short and engaging look at the role that African Americans have played in the development and telling of the "American" story is insightful and honest. This book forces people to think about how much our culture is influenced by the traditionally marginalized folks that make up a large part of our population but who historically have not had a large voice in sharing their experiences of America with the rest of us.
Toni Morrison "Playing in the Dark" shed's light to the ignorances of narrow mines that does not justify it's means.I've read all of Toni Morrison's books which always takes the reader to the place and time of the characters she creates. From beginning to end of each story, Morrison concludes a lesson that preceded adversity which withstands the storms of life. I would recommend this book to people.
