Great guide, very thorough. Read twice, then took HAM test and got a 90 on the general test
So after you pass your Technician Class exam you may think about taking the General Class exam, since that license opens up a great portion of the HF bands (you know, what grandma and grandpa called "shortwave radio"). This book zeroes-in on the questions and answers using a textbook-like narrative, but is kind of light on the theory. But by studying this book and committing the answers to memory, you'll have a good chance of passing, which is exactly the purpose of this book. However, after you pass, you may want to get a different book to fill in the blanks and get the big picture: there's more to power supplies than filter networks, bleeding resistors, and lightweight inductors and capacitors to smooth out the pulses (these are all approximate answers to General exam questions). To delve in deeper, I recommend the The ARRL General Class License Manual (emphasis on Manual). Of course, this book is about 4X longer and it would be a bear to study from unless you want to commit six months to the effort.As always, pick your VE location and date first, then work backwards to see how long you need to study. This hard deadline will help motivate you and keep you on track. I spent about 20 minutes a day (about 60 minutes on Sat/Sun) for 30 days reading and re-reading the book, about twice as long as I spent on the Technician exam since the material is far more obscure and disconnected (although it builds on the Technician material). Full-wave rectifier? Control grid? Maximum deviation of an oscillator? Varicode? PM? Obscure indeed. But that's why you need a study guide.Good luck!
This is seriously a no-nonsense guide, nothing more than info you need, only including brief explanations if required. The questions are reworded into paragraphs and it flows quite nicely. The question number is bolded in brackets right next to the answer and is super clear what is needed to know! This is very unlike the ARRL license manuals where the question number is sometimes many sentences away from the buried answer that may or may not be clearly expressed.I was able to read this book in one day and pass the exam the next with no problems!However, there is some nonsense in this book when it explains question G1D11, it is about what you must do to renew an expired general/extra license. The answer is, you must retake the technician license to show you still have the knowledge. Seriously FCC? That is NONSENSE, but not the author's fault.
The No-Nonsense Series of books is an excellent way to prepare for the Ham License Exams - I read the technician and the general license study guides and then practiced a lot on HamStudy.org, both single sections and practice exams, and passed my technician and my general license exams with flying colors. Make no mistake about it: this is not an in-depth technical manual, nor does it claim to be, it is a study guide for the tests only.But Romanchik puts the questions in a very easy to follow prose and in context, which helps enormously to both understand and remember the material. Moreover, this guide shines in explaining formulae in a way that makes working with them easy.By contrast, the ARRL books are overwhelming with details, especially for beginners, and much better suited as reference works. And though Gordon West produces an excellent series of study guides, I found his style too chatty, and I never could sit down and read his book cover to cover. Romanchik's direct approach, on the other hand, worked well for me.All in all I would highly recommend the No-Nonsense Study Guides for getting your amateur license. And remember: the license is only the first step, afterwards it is important to find a nice group of hams to join, learn from and share with!
This is a classic, but I hated it. That's not necessarily the author's fault.On the other hand, I joined an online service to practice for the test. I passed the General, Technician, and Extra tests on the same day. A hard cover book cannot compete with software in teaching multiple choice.
I can not recommend this book enough. I used Dan's No Nonsense Study Guide for Technician class and passed around Thanksgiving 2015. I decided to get my General about two weeks ago so I purchased this book. After two weeks of studying this guide and taking practice exams at three different sites I aced my exam yesterday. 35 for 35. As soon as I got home I purchased the No Nonsense Study Guide for Amateur Extra. My goal is to have my Extra license within six months of earning my Technician license. This is the easiest way to study. Thanks Dan, KB6NU!
Excellent book that very effectively serves its purpose - to help someone quickly prepare for and pass the general class license exam. Learning a subject in depth is a very different proposition from passing a test. This book is a great way to put the test behind you and get your license, at which point the learning is a lot more fun and useful.
Dan Romanchick is the best! I needed something that gave me the information that I needed with out all the dressings and ramblings about random information that I wasn't interested in anyway...great job! If you're thinking of a license upgrade then definitely buy this book. Highly recommend it to anyone!
