I've always loved history and historical fiction, but never has a book evoked such a powerful emotional resonance of what it was like to exist back in those times, especially for a woman. The stories Artemisia is told and tells are haunting and empowering and relevant today. A truly incredible feat of writing, allowing a story that seems so far off to hit me and connect me to a universal female experience. Plus, I loved having stories and emotion behind the incredible paintings Artemisia painted. Like, I was thrown electrifying feels AND learned something?I wish I'd read this in high school when we had to learn about the Renaissance. I hope one day it is.

I stayed up too late last night, but I absolutely had to finish this amazing book. BLOOD WATER PAINT is a book that I will never forget. The way this woman (and so many women throughout history) managed to persist and find her own voice and the courage to use it...against all the odds... it took my breath away. As we work to end the culture that allows for sexual abuse and domestic violence to persist, I will be holding the story of Artemisia and all survivors close to my heart. We must listen to their voices.

BLOOD WATER PAINT is one of those stories that grabs ahold of you and doesn't let go. I already know it's going to be one of those books I'll come back to again and again, the kind that you hold onto and let the words and truths wash over you, because this book, a historical account of Artemisia's rape and subsequent trial--but more importantly her strength and the power one's voice has--is an important one, written in a manner that is both beautiful and accessible. The verse format allows for maximum emotional impact, but it gives the space we need to process the horrors. Artemisia's story is one I wasn't familiar with but now it's one that I couldn't imagine not knowing. I'm telling everyone I know--you NEED to read this book!

"And listen to me, love. When a woman risks her place, her very life to speak a truth the world despises? Believe her. Always."As a lover of art history, as a teacher, as an artist, and as a woman, I loved this book. I long for, and so rarely find, books that tell the stories of art, of artists, as creative non-fiction. This definitely fit the bill, and was an easy and quick read.It tells the story of 17 year old Artemisia Gentileschi, an "apprentice" artist at a time when women did not become such, her apprenticeship mostly a screen for her father to take credit for her work. Although it takes place over 500 years ago, it could have happened yesterday, or happen still next week, and but for a few 17th century Roman details we wouldn't know the difference. This story is told two-fold: as the biblical stories of two women that were the bases for two of Artemisia's more famous paintings told by her mother and written in prose, and as Artemisia lives and tells her own story in beautifully written free verse. The storytelling is exquisite and the story itself terrifying and infuriating and beautiful and sad. What I want you to know is this: Artemisia Gentileschi is known now for the event(s) described in this book. Maybe if not for it, we wouldn't even know this woman or her work so it is hard to separate the Artist from the victim. That being said, regardless, she isn't only to be studied by art historians because she was one of the finest (and only) female artists recognized at the time, but because she is one of the finest artists of her time, and possibly ours.As a sometimes art history teacher, I introduce Judith and Artemisia on day one in my class. When I teach her, I introduce the story of Judith and Holofernes first. There are many depictions of this story throughout history, and I show several different works to illustrate the time periods and styles through this single subject (maybe 7 art works). My students do the standard compare and contrast, try to identify the style, try to organize them chronologically, etc etc. The last thing I ask is "Which of these was painted by a woman?" They have five minutes to think about it, write down their answer, and defend it with their why. When we share the responses, it is always so interesting to see how the students choose. Let's break down our assumptions and biases on day one, and take the time to really see the art.I ask you, as you read, or after... Look at all the Susannas that were painted, and all the different Judiths. The great and powerful and talented men who painted these women, and then look at Artemisia Gentileschis."I will show you what a woman can do."

An exceptional book, the true story of Artemisia Gentileschi, an extraordinarily talented 17-year old girl living and painting in a society that didn't value girls (sound familiar?). Timely and timeless. Artemisia is inspiring for her fortitude and for speaking truth, but this story doesn't shy away from an honest look at what happens when we speak. Important concepts throughout, but told in a beautiful way. The writing is a joy to read, so much poetry. Yet the story unfolds quickly, which is not always the case with beautiful writing. Nathanial Hawthorne said, "Easy reading is damned hard writing." That is true here. We are clearly in good hands with McCullough, and I'll definitely read whatever she writes next.

Review

Climbing a mountain in nothing but a pair of shorts seems idiotic to most, but for Wim Hof and his companions, it’s just another day. When investigative journalist and anthropologist Carney heard about Hof’s mind-boggling methods and claims that he could “hack” the human body, he knew he had to venture to Poland to expose this fraud. But in just a few days, Hof changed Carney’s mind, and so began a friendship and a new adventure. Carney now chronicles his journey to push himself mentally and physically using Wim Hof’s method of cold exposure, breath-holding, and meditation to tap into our primal selves. Our ancestors survived harsh conditions without modern technology, while we live in comfortable bubbles with little to struggle against and wonder how they survived. The question is, What happens when we push our bodies to the limit? Carney calls on evolutionary biology and other modern scientific disciplines to explore and explain Hof’s unconventional methods. Fresh and exciting, this book has wide appeal for readers interested in health, sports, self-improvement, and extreme challenges.―Booklist As this engaging autoethnography relates, anthropologist and investigative journalist Carney was skeptical upon encountering a photo of a nearly naked Wim Hof sitting on a glacier in the Arctic Circle. Hof, a Dutch fitness guru who runs a training camp in Poland’s wilderness, claims he can control his body temperature and immune system solely with his mind; though Carney set out to prove Hof a charlatan, he was instead won over. Carney documents his interactions with Hof and the many others who have learned to control their bodies in seemingly impossible ways: he learned Hof’s breathing techniques for tricking the body into doing things it isn’t evolutionarily designed for, and underwent training to face extreme cold while barely clothed. It is this training that enables Hof and Carney to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro in 28 hours while wearing shorts. This is part guide and part popular science book; readers will learn about how Neanderthals used the body’s “brown fat” to keep warm and how exposure nearly reverses the symptoms of diabetes. The accomplishments Carney documents are unbelievable and fascinating; this isn’t a how-to for those looking to perform extraordinary feats, but it is an entertaining account that will appeal to the adventurous.―Publishers Weekly On the heels of the paleo diet comes a new claim: taking on the physical challenges of the environment faced by our prehistoric ancestors can undo what easy calories and effortless comfort have done to our bodies―made them fat, lazy, and weak. In his latest book, investigative journalist and anthropologist Carney (A Death on Diamond Mountain: A True Story of Obsession, Madness, and the Path to Enlightenment, 2015, etc.) expands on his 2014 Playboy piece, “The Iceman Cometh,” in which he profiled Dutch fitness guru Wim Hof and experienced Hof’s strenuous training methods, some of which involve exposing the near-naked body to snow and icy water. At first skeptical, Carney became convinced by the changes he experienced in his own body. The narrative is filled with personal details that will engage, astonish, and even repel readers. Expanding on his unnerving close-up account, the author also examines the research being done on the role of brown adipose tissue in the body and a variety of military and sports medicine training practices. He cites the anecdotal evidence of people who have placed their faith in Hof and are convinced that his techniques have changed, if not saved, their lives―e.g., sufferers of Parkinson’s disease, Crohn’s disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. As a climax to his account, Carney describes how, stripped to the waist, he accompanied Hof on a climb to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak. In the epilogue, the author asserts that his experiences showed him that “exposure to cold helps reconfigure the cardiovascular system, combat autoimmune malfunctions, and is a pretty darned good method to simply lose weight.” Hof provides the book’s foreword. Couch potatoes take warning: the experiences described in this testimonial are often tough to read about, and the conclusions, while sometimes convincing, might best be taken with a touch of skepticism.―Kirkus “Scott Carney is so curious about getting to the truth of things that he is willing to endure great pain and suffering to get there. While investigating the controversial methods of Wim Hof and others operating on the scientific fringe, Carney entered a skeptic yet emerged a true believer. In What Doesn't Kill Us, readers get to follow him along on his transformational journey, and the insights are truly fascinating. Informative, fun, and with a healthy degree of danger, this is a book for the adventurer in all of us.”―Gabrielle Reece, co-founder, XPT (Extreme Performance Training) “The further we get from the harsh environmental conditions that once threatened our existence, the more we need them. I see this every weekend at a Spartan Race somewhere in the world. Millions of otherwise sane people line up to suffer and push themselves to their physical limits, and it feels good. What Doesn't Kill Us is a fascinating investigation into the innate urge that drives people like these, and reveals how some have managed to use environmental conditioning to accomplish truly extraordinary things." ―Joe DeSena, founder, Spartan Race “As a Navy SEAL, you live by the mantra, ‘what doesn’t kill us only makes us stronger.’ We would hear this phrase and repeat it, but we never had any proof that it was factual. Yet through comprehensive study, Scott Carney has brilliantly documented how engaging in environmental conditioning, breathing, meditation, and other techniques can actually make us physically and mentally stronger. What Doesn’t Kill Us is a fascinating book that will captivate all who read it and that will be of immense value to those in the military, those who are active in sports, and those who seek an alternate means of developing greater mental and physical strength.”―Don D. Mann, New York Times bestselling author, Inside SEAL Team SIX “Damn fun and extremely well-researched, What Doesn’t Kill Us is a great addition to the canon of high performance literature!”― Steven Kotler, New York Times bestselling author of Abundance and The Rise of Superman “When it's cold outside, do you turn the heating up? Do you always put a coat on before going out? Do you think your comfortable life is good for you? If so, you have to read Scott Carney's What Doesn't Kill Us. Through some great stories ― which often involve Carney trudging through snow without much on ― and some serious research, he shows us how to escape the bland, shuffling gait of our centrally-heated, fleece-jacketed, molly-coddled lives by diving head-first into the ice-cold, axe-sharp, scary experiences that made our ancestors’ hearts beat faster every day. If we do that, we can awaken from the dull slumber of modern life and open our eyes to a better, healthier dawn of crisp air, better circulation, and the ability to truly mean it when we say: I'm alive. Buy this book, and you'll emerge a stronger, healthier, more human human.”― James Wallman, author of Stuffocation

Got this book for my birthday, and man has it changed how I view health and the human body in general. It always bugged me in the back of my mind how our ancestors managed to get by without air conditioning and hot showers. When I heard about Wim Hof, I instantly knew that he was on to something with his cold tolerance stuff. Seeing him break the world records, go under scientific scrutiny, and even resist an endotoxin and only get a slight headache, I was sold. Before I even got this book I started doing cold showers and saw results within just around 3 days or so. Before, I would take really hot showers and as soon as I got out, the evaporation made me shiver uncontrollably. After doing cold showers (man, did they sting at first!), I'm able to go outside in the snow with no shirt on and it feels more comfortable than what hot showers used to feel like. No shivering, I'm just chill (haha).I also bought Wim Hof's 10 week course for about $190 and can already hold my breath for around 3 minutes without really trying, and I've only been doing these breath exercises for like 3 days. I can do 40 pushups without breathing! I don't need coats and jackets when it's cold outside and my family is complaining and shivering and I'm fine. Just be aware that people can be really resistant to this sort of knowledge because it runs so counter-intuitive to the drug-addicted culture we live in. Prescribed pill popping won't get you healthy, it merely manages different conditions and gives you more side effects than positive results in many cases.Cold tolerance exercises your cardio-vascular system and your immune system and makes it so that your heart has to work less hard to keep you warm and moving. It's also very beneficial for stretching parts of your body that are sore. Just go to Wim Hof's youtube channel and look at all the testimonials of people who have diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Multiple Sclerosis, even deep skin burns. This stuff really works. So yeah, buy this book and then do it! You can too can become... THE ICEMAN!

I was really looking forward to reading this book. But it was a let down. I think it has such high reviews because people really like the Wim Hoff method and want something to read on the topic as there isn't much. I think the subject matter is driving the ratings more than the book itself. But this book hardly has anything to do with the WHM. Basically Scott traveled all over talking to scientist and people that are interested in challenging themselves and their bodies. Problem is the book isn't about what he discovered so much as the story of him traveling and talking to people. Very little information in this book. I don't what to read the life story of every person you talked to. Just tell me what you found out. In particular on the WHM. I was very excited to read about what happened in the WH camp when he went for training in person and the techniques. I think the story about him taking a shower and flooding the house was given more space than anything to actually do with the WHM. I don't care. Also the story about climbing Kilimanjaro was a bit anticlimactic SPOILER ALERT (kind of you already know the ending from the start basically). I thought it was going to be a group of guys that climbed the mountain with just shorts and no shirts in record time. Instead they just took their shirts off sometimes and put them back on when they felt like it. It's still cool that there's some extra cold resistance but it's not the same as climbing the whole mountain shirtless. Also they didn't climb to the top. They just raced up part of it and got close to the top and said we have nothing further to prove once they got tired and said well it's a record to this point. Well I could sprint up the first mile of the trail and collapse and say there I set the record for this point. But nobody's racing to that point. They're pacing themselves to the top.I think the biggest take away was that they climbed the mountain at a faster pace and didn't acclimate to it by using the breathing techniques. I think there's something substantial there. But the climb is a bit hyped up.If you read this expect to read a lot more about Scott entering tough mudders and similar obstacle courses and finishing in the middle of the pack than WM or his methods. Nothing wrong with entering and finishing 53rd. But nobody really wants to read about the guy who did and how he did it. WM is a champion, I want to read about that guy. How does he do it, not how strange he is.If you're looking to learn more about the WHM and techniques to implement just go to youtube. There's nothing new or deeper here. Only one breathing method in the book and it's the same as the one on youtube. Probably about 2 pages of technique in here. The rest is him talking to people and his conversation with Wim Hoff about how he want's to go to Kilmanjaro with him and what a quirky guy Wim is and oh we missed our turn in our blue 2004 chevy van with a rusty bumper and we'll have to turn around probably cost us about 5 maybe 6 minutes to make up for... Seriously about 75% of this book could just be cut out. It's mostly fill and the book knows it. It starts out talking about the end and climbing Kilimanjaro but stops for 15 chapters of fill (maybe 2-3 good ones in there) and holds the rest of the story over your head to keep you reading. Also I got frostbite following the instruction in this book. After reading his story about their first day in camp going out in the cold for 5 minutes in their underwear and rolling in the snow and returning to a sauna. I followed the guidelines in the book and tried it for myself. Basically the story told about how painful it was to stand in the cold for the first time. It's part of the process, how you have to earn your immunity to the cold. Then they came in to the warmth and it was even more painful than the cold. All part of the process. Just have to get through it. There was a chart (page 61) that had on one axis the temperature and the other the wind speed. By connecting the 2 points the chart would tell you how long you can be outside and exposed before getting frostbite. So I rounded down the temperature and rounded up the wind speed to give me a windchill of -17. According to the chart it should take 30 minutes of exposure before frostbite sets in. Although one degree less and it would be in the 10 minute range. A big drop off. But it was day one so I was only doing 5 minutes so I'd be more then fine. Right? So I went out bare foot wearing only some gym shorts and ran around in the snow for 5 minutes. Overall I was just fine but my feet were killing me. But I just reminded myself, it's all part of the process. It's supposed to hurt. And I have a pretty good pain tolerance so I rolled with it. I came inside and as they warmed the pain was almost unbearable. It's all part of the process. I held my feet up to the fire like the guy in the book and took the pain. Well for a short period of time, then it was too much I had to stop that to lay on the floor in agony. I kept waiting and it kept hurting. The next day my feet were still killing me and walking was difficult. I looked up the symptoms of frostbite and it turns out that they are identical to all the symptoms of it's all part of the process. I was peeling dead skin off my feet and toes for a few months. Luckily no permanent damage. I didn't think about it at the time but we had just come out of an extremely cold stretch here in WI where the temp (not windchill) was about -20 to -30 at night. So even though it was 7 out when I did it the ground was still probably -20. So you might want to factor that in prior to trying for yourself. In fact I would have stayed for much longer if it wasn't for my feet hurting so bad as the rest of my body wasn't even cold. Maybe wear some sandals or water shoes or something so you still have the exposure to the air but not the direct contact with the ground. I don't hold this against the book. I was aware of the risk. Although, I think readers should be aware that what he describes as how to know it's working is the exact same as the symptoms of frostbite and it's not working. It's just a question of degree to how much it hurts. Which he describes as a lot, so it's hard to tell. And air temp is not ground temp. But I went back for more with shoes on until my feet healed. So overall the vibe I get from Scott is that he's probably not a bad guy. Seems rather likable. And the book has some tidbits, but it needs some major editing of the delete button kind. I'd much rather read a highly informative pamphlet than a long drawn out book with the same amount of info.

I tell everyone I know about this technique. Most are skeptical. To date, only 1 person has actually tried it. Zero have consistently incorporated it into their training. Their loss. It really works at unlocking your human potential. This book has the best description and comprehensive look at the Wim Hof method. I've heard Wim speak on several podcasts, but his limited English and raw emotion gets in the way of understanding it fully. Scott Carney does a great job immersing himself in the subject for you.I use this technique to oxygenate for training intervals. It has exponentially helped my cycling performance. Racing especially.Read this book. Do the method.Or don't. Especially don't read this book if you race MTB or cyclocross in the upper midwest.

At last a voice of reason! Every once in a while a fresh view on something old finally comes along. I read this book with relish. Mr. Dunn is no dummy and he knows his stuff. I have ready many books on the pyramids and some of them I throw across the room in disgust--not this one!It is amazing how the "Main Streamists" insist that the pyramids of Giza were tombs when no body has ever been found inside them. They are not decorated inside like a tomb--not built like a tomb. Mr. Dunn is right as far as I am concerned. His arguments make so much sense and he backs them up with his knowledge of engineering.Mr. Dunn has undoubtedly taken a lot of flack and criticism for his views as has Robert Schock. These two men have risked their reputations, tenure, etc. to speak out. A new voice is always listened to with suspicion. Hats off to the men and women of the fresh voice who take us forward to new theories and new knowledge. Thank you, Mr. Dunn, for your forthright opinions and years of research trying to bring us kicking and screaming into a new realm of possibility. This is a wonderful book and an amazing book. I am awed by it!

First; a brief comment about another reviewer. I was looking over some of the old reviews before publishing mine, and out of curiosity I read a 'One-Star' review that was particularly harsh (not to mention lengthy) on Mr. Dunn's work. What I find most disturbing is the fact that it was written by the co-author (Marge Morris) of 'The Pyramids an Enigma Solved." This is a book that I have read and found to be intellectually stimulating, well written and relevant. What I find most distasteful is the fact that this fellow researcher and author, would use this forum to dismiss Mr. Dunn's hard work and research, and then go to great length to promote hers. I would like to believe (since we are all striving to better understand the mysteries of the ancient world), that there is room for more than one theory. Particularly when we are dealing with something as enigmatic and controversial as this subject appears to be. I am sure that Mr. Dunn has had to develop a thick skin over the ensuing years, due to the provocative and novel, leading edge ideas he has posited.Even though her particular review was written many years ago. it is still no less than small-minded, self-promoting, and above all unnecessary.Okay (now that I have that off my chest); this book was published in 1998 and I didn't get around to reading it until 2012, which means I'm a bit behind the 'Power' curve (pun not withstanding), yet as they say "better late than never." I'm so glad this book finally came to my attention and that I took the time to read it. That may have been due to seeing Mr. Dunn on the History channel being interviewed for the show "Ancient Aliens" (a popular show with an unfortunate name that implies everything has something to do with aliens, which I question but do not dismiss completely; I just think there are perhaps other alternatives?). I have also heard Mr. Dunn's interviews on the Coast to Coast late night talk show as well as 'youtube' videos of his presentations and have always found him to be intelligent, forthright and sensible. I would be remiss if I did not add that other theories aside, his appears to bring us much closer to some ultimate understanding of what this mighty edifice of precision engineered stone is all about.I have had the good fortune to have actually taken the tour inside the Great Pyramid of Giza, as a serving member of the USAF back in the mid-nineties. It left indelible impressions on me, and my regret is that as a young man I did not have the understanding or appreciation of Egyptian culture and her monuments, that I now have some twenty years later, after much reading and research on the subject. Back then my understanding of Egypt and her history was based on what I had seen in movies or on TV. Having made that clear, I very well remember walking (more like a stooped crouch as I recall) awkwardly up the ascending corridor and wondering why was it necessary to have a makeshift wooden ramp with cross-members to help tourists and the general public safely ascend to the Grand Gallery; could not the architects have incorporated stairs? Although I did not dwell on such a trivial (to some) issue at the time (due to the overwhelming sensory input akin to a child exploring a mysterious place for the first time), however I was subliminally aware that something was amiss; something did not add up?I was further baffled by the strange configuration of the Grand Gallery, with its odd architecture of corbelled sides rising up and towards each other for some inherent, and yet occluded purpose? Still believing what I had always been told; that this great mountain of stone was built with the sole purpose as a pharaoh's tomb. Upon gaining access to the so-called "Kings Chamber" with its much abused "sarcophagus" (?), I was startled to find that the walls (of which are perfectly flat and squared at the corners) were oddly devoid of any markings? Save for the questionable markings of red ochre paint attributed to the builders (this was unknown to me at the time) who in the manner of 'graffiti' painted the name of their pharaoh who supposedly commissioned this monument for his burial place. These suspect markings were"allegedly" found by one Col. Vyse in 1837, in the (so called) "relieving chambers" directly above the Kings Chamber; which had to be blasted open with gunpowder, no less! There was (is) absolutely no sign of hieroglyphics to be found anywhere else within this immense structure! This from a culture known to cover its monuments and funerary walls with numerous hieroglyphs in honor of deeds accomplished, feats to be remembered, as well as praise for their 'god-like' pharaohs, and with great detail. And yet nothing of the sort is found here; nothing save perfection in stone; stone which feels and looks much older than the attributed 4th dynasty origins (circa 2500 B.C.).Perhaps the author himself said it best when he wrote; "I was astonished and could find no logical resemblance to any feature one would find in a building constructed for human activity."It does make one wonder, if the Great Pyramid was not built for human activity (alive or deceased), than just what the heck was this monumental undertaking designed to do? This is exactly What Chris Dunn, a master craftsman and engineer dares to answer in his ground-breaking and paradigm shifting treatise, which posits no less than the unthinkable; that this mountain of precision engineered stone just might have been designed to "machine tolerances" beyond anything reasonable in the architecture of "HUMAN" habitats or structures, to function as a MACHINE! Or more specifically a "Power Plant," (the functioning details are found in his book).Let's review what has come to light in the last several decades:1. The thee main pyramids of Giza, are aligned to the three bright stars of Orion' belt; thanks to Robert Bauval and his "Orion Correlation Theory."2. The Great Pyramid has been called "The Bible in Stone" by some, due to its antiquity (pre or post deluge?) and the esoteric knowledge built into it by its creators.3. The three main pyramids as well as the Great Sphinx were intended as a set of monuments coeval with an unknown yet interconnected purpose.4. The Sphinx at Giza is far older than previously thought, as evidenced by the "water erosion" apparent on its (un-refurbished) sides as shown by Dr. Robert Schoch; (which would suggest coeval antiquity of the Giza complex as a whole).5. The exterior dimensions of the Great Pyramid show that the builders had knowledge of the circumference of the Earth, our distance from the Sun, as well as the precession of the equinox(s), with its 26,000 year duration , which the ancients called the "Great Year."6. The interior design of the Great Pyramid is unusual, enigmatic and serves no (known) human function imaginable, based on our understanding of architectural science for the human species.7. The (so-called) architectual "Relieving Chambers" layered above the (so-called) "Kings Chamber" (named from the Arabic perspective); are in fact "Relieving" what exactly? The massive weight from above? And yet considering that this chamber is several courses above the (so-called) "Queens Chamber - situated well below it, for which the architects saw no need for "relieving chambers," even though there must be millions of additional tons of stone above it? Clearly these spaced and layered chambers above the 'KC' had another function; (of which Mr. Dunn has an interesting idea that has to do with resonance as I recall).8. No mummified remains of anyone were ever found in the Great Pyramid. And as for the others it is my understanding that any found were from much later periods and in the best tradition of "re-purposing" an already existing monument!9. Contrary to what mainstream Egyptologists would have us believe, Khufu (Gr. Cheops) did not have this pyramid built, but rather inherited it intact, as a legacy structure form a former age, just as the stele found between the paws of the Sphinx has implied.10. The so-named "Gang of Khufu" did not write his name with red ochre paint in the crawlspace of one of the relieving chambers; this was a fraud perpetrated by a glory-hound and fund seeking explorer "wannabe" of Egyptian antiquities; who has been characterized as the "Black sheep" of his family. We find Colonel Vyse, along with his cohort(s) in crime, who accomplished this heinous act of fraud after blasting his way into a sealed cavity, in 1837. This outrageous act of fraud has 'mucked-up' our understanding of these monuments to this very day, IMHO. (See the late authors Z. Sitchin's "Stairway to Heaven," Chapter entitled "Forging the Pharaoh's Name." Also The late Phillip Coppens, "Murder and forgery inside the Great Pyramid?" As found online; both provide in-depth perspective on this travesty). The ten items offered above, are but the tip of a vast iceberg of information concerning this subject; the list of incongruous anomalies and found revelations, could go on for several pages. And now we must add the very real possibility that a primary function of this last existing 'wonder of the ancient world', may have been a cleverly designed source of (free) power or energy as well? It is exciting and boggles the mind, but don't expect mainstream, conventional Egyptology to climb on board any of this any time soon. They are content to believe the lie about Khufu. They are loath to admit that Victorian era antiquarians may have mislead those extant institutions of higher learning for fame and profit. A legacy that muddles the picture and hampers a fresh perspective. For me personally, after all the books I've read on this particular subject; I have come to the conclusion that we are dealing with something far older than we dare imagine. A multi-faceted and purpose built structure, designed by a culture seemingly far brighter than we think we are. A structure (including others on the Giza plateau) that are so 'hoary with age' that they were inherited and, Here's the key, "repurposed" over time by younger civilizations who had forgotten the true genesis of these structures, or who the original builders might have been? These later cultures tried their best to copy these pyramids, and mostly failed to execute such lasting edifices. Hopefully one day we will learn who really built these Giza pyramids, we may never fully comprehend how. For as advanced as we "think" we are, those answers still elude us.In my mind the notion of a "Power Plant" built with machine precision, is not too much of a stretch of ones imagination. Even if this isn't the case, and its intended or inherent purpose was something else altogether; I think many would agree that the Great Pyramid is of a much older provenance, regardless of what mainstream Egyptology (including a shady character named Zawi Hawass) would have us believe. As for Khufu (aka Cheops) being the commissioning pharaoh of this massive and enigmatic undertaking; there is very little, if not suspect or contradictory evidence that he was indeed the guy that said "let it be built." However the evidence (if one is open to it) would suggest that Khufu did, in fact "inherit" the Great Pyramid, which to my thinking is much more plausible.Mind you this was a culture who venerated their esteemed pharaohs with cyclopean statues and yet we find but just one statue of Khufu (now in the Cairo museum) which stands a mighty 3 inches tall! Yeah that makes sense; are we to believe he used up all his "pharaoh monument points" on the Great Pyramid? Sure, that must be what happened. I can just see Biff thumping on Marty's dad's head now, as he shouts; "Wake Up Mcfly!"Perhaps we are the ones that need to "Wake UP" to the true heritage and legacy of our ancient ancestors. Taken collectively, all the cyclopean, monolithic and enigmatic stone structures found all over this planet, it is increasingly clear that we are missing something profound and wondrous about our very ancient, and un-doubtfully 'pre-cataclysmic' past.Read Mr. Dunn's book and decide for yourself. I think you will find that his thesis is very credible, extremely astute and helps to explain some very unusual design features within this enigmatic structure. His book is well written, captivating and hard to put down.

Enjoyed a refreshing look at the remains of ancient Egypt by a qualified engineer. His evidence for construction with advanced methods is interesting, observable, and logical. If our civilization had taken Tesla's research seriously instead of our oil-based, greed-motivated combustion economy, our engineers may developed other methods of generating electricity. Then again, modern Egypt and the Middle East wouldn't have sold any oil.To paraphrase Arthur C Clark:If a scientist states that something is possible, it's almost certainly right. If a scientist states that something is impossible, it's probably wrong. The only way of finding the possible is to go past the impossible.Advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Since I have a bachelor's degree in manufacturing engineering and am now retired, I found Chris Dunn's theory to be particularly interesting. I know from my own shop experience just how difficult it truly is to repeat high tolerance work on even small, as in what you can hold in the palm of your hand, parts much less something the size of the King's Chamber. And since one of my main functions was chief estimator for putting a price to this kind of work, I also have a pretty good handle on how much work like this costs. So, to suggest that the ancients would put this kind of effort, and cost, into a mere burial chamber is ludicrous, at best. So, if the Giza complex was not built as a burial complex, then what the heck was it built for? And why? And what, other than a finely tuned and superbly crafted machine, would require such an incredible level of high tolerance work and more importantly, repeatable high tolerance work, done over and over and over again. In my opinion, Chris Dunn's work is truly an amazing discovery as well as a masterful piece of detective work. Truly Amazing.

This exploration of the Great Pyramid at Giza is absolutely astonishing. Of the hundred of books I have read in the "fringe" genre, this is definitely one of the very best. Christopher Dunn demonstrates how precision machining was used to create many of the artifacts in and around the pyramid--techniques that rival (and often surpass) those employed today. Dunn expertly shows how the notion of slave labor working with copper chisels and ropes to create these artifacts is simply absurd. A veteran engineer himself, Dunn adroitly presents one of the most compelling and intriguing theories about what the pyramids were (probably) actually for: mass energy production and distribution. This book will literally change everything you know about the ancient past. An absolutely incredible read!

Review

“Shepard may be the best lesser-known film critic.” - Peter Biskind, The New York Times Book Review“It’s a pleasure to read Shepard’s graceful prose, and the insights just seem to flow from his pen. [These essays] remain vital for precisely the reason that the films they discuss remain vital: they balance entertainment with deeper concerns about morality and society. . . . This collection shows Shepard’s voice to be as essential as ever.” - Publishers Weekly, Starred Review“Shepard displays a talent for sharp film criticism laced with equally penetrating political insight. . . . Amid the thumbs up or down style that dominates 21st-century American film criticism, Shepard's provocative engagement with this art form offers a bracing change of pace.” - Shelf Awareness“Intriguing and surprising . . . [Shepard] finds new relevance in every movie he endeavors to explore.” - Kirkus“As our new president continues to make fresh breakthroughs in reckless buffoonery, it can be tempting to cast 'a rosy glow backward' on George W. Bush and his policies. In this astringent and witty collection, Shepard argues convincingly that to do so would be a travesty.” - The Washington Post“Fans of Jim Shepard’s wonderful fiction will be further entranced by the range, scope and emotion of his nonfiction work.” - Highbrow Magazine

It may not be the best way to review a book, but all I have after reading Shepard are questions. Where is this society we live in headed? How fast are we going? How long can we continue to delude ourselves about our destination? Our destination? Our means of travel? Maybe a closer look through the moving window of our cinema can be helpful. The landscape outside as we press onward, or backward, continues to change and the clues about our direction are confusing and, yes, disorienting. Jim Shepard is with us at the window, pointing out the landmarks, orienting and reorienting our journey as we pass station after station. This is not a book for film buffs or budding screenplay writers, it is a book about finding what is lost. It is as important an atlas as has ever been compiled. Like the medium it uses to navigate, even its unflattering portraits are entertaining. Shepard’s wit is as incisive as his close ups. This collection is not to be ignored.

Fascinating insights into movies we all know, and their relationship to contemporaneous cultural and political events.

I don't know of any other movie reviewer who explores so astutely how certain movies reflect the political culture and psychology of our time. That's why I was compelled to re-read a couple of my favorites almost immediately after finishing them the first time. When every political leader is a feckless narcissist or untouchable sociopath, it says something about where we're headed as a people. As an audience we are so easily seduced into sympathizing with maniacal or irredeemably flawed characters, entertained by sugar-coated history (see the essay about Saving Private Ryan) so long as the spectacle is profoundly visceral. My favorite essay argues that Chinatown is a stab at America's irreversible nihilism, driven by Polanski's intentionally macabre humor. It'd be nice if we could look back a decade or so from now and begin to see these essays as deeply jaded and more reflective of their time than the movies themselves. But fortunately (and perhaps unfortunately), that doesn't seem very likely.

Jim Shepard has long been one of my favorite short story writers. I was fortunate enough to meet him at a local bookstore where I bought this collection of essays. Mostly he discusses how movies reflect the mindset of the America that gave birth of them whether from Stephen Spielberg reminding the audience of heroism in the midst of the Holocaust or from Terrence Malick and Roman Polanski exposing the corruption at the heart of the American dream. He ties these back to the attitude of a public that elect leaders who keep getting us into disastrous wars. Highly recommended.

superb readable essays which greatly extended my understanding of the movies referenced, and gave me reasons to watch again with an enhanced understanding.Thinking about it I realise that I have rather casually seen some of these works on tv without really paying attention to the subtleties involved.I need to learn more about Mr shepards work.

At less than 350 pages, Max Hastings' "The Korean War" isn't really long enough to be comprehensive. It is, however, perhaps the most balanced account of a still-controversial war. The author's willingness to see all sides of the conflict also allows him to reasonably weigh the effects of their respective actions, from the U.S. decision to send troops to Korea in September 1945, and to send them back in June 1950, to the Chinese decision to send their own troops into Korea that winter, to the collective decision, painfully arrived at, to sign an armistice in July 1953.The author takes a roughly chronological approach to the conflict, with a couple of side chapters devoted to U.S. special operations and the air war. Among the takeaways for interested readers are a running assessment in the narrative of how lessons learned and not learned in Korea would affect conflicts down the road, especially in Indochina, and not just for the United States. The author's status as a Brit allows him a friendly but fair perspective. Very well recommended.

I really enjoyed this book. Even though it is rather lengthy, is written in such a way that keeps the reader's attention. Within it there is history that I have not yet heard before. Case in point would be about the UN prisoner compounds located on offshore islands. I've only heard accounts of them mentioned in passing in other books. There has been some criticism about the fact that it goes heavily into the British presence in Korea. This might be the case, but it's refreshing to hear another source of the history of the conflict. If you have read this author's other works you will find this to be a worthwhile read. I highly recommend it.

The book takes a look at the war from the British view of the conflict. It has the useful overview of the conflict from the strategic stage and then moves down to the operational. He has severe criticism of MacArthur, attempts to reinforce the grace that GEN Walker commanded in losing situation, and highlights the complete turnaround of the UN forces under GEN Ridgeway after the death of GEN Walker; he offers no explanation why one was effective and one was not. To the book, he adds the discussion of some the allies, in particular the British forces. One comment: The cover. It is classic photograph of war. Sometimes the media shows heroic action which some dismiss as propaganda while other media show mundane shots which other dismiss as not showing the real war. Some show this type of shot. In all wars, some Soldiers ... either to inexperience, heavy battle, or lack of confidence (leadership). This shot too is not the real war. Many Soldiers, combat Soldiers, do and will break. But, most come and fight and leave ... changed but not destroyed ... it is a matter of attitude. Mr. Hastings' book Nemesis highlights one English Soldier who fought in North Africa and then went to fight the South Pacific. His biggest complaint was the rain, not the war. He was confident and resilient and he came home relatively fine. The ones that have friends do well in war. An equally famous shot, that could have been used was one where one Soldier comforted his buddy. It is a western opinion that wars can not be won and end like this picture; the rest of the world does not have this opinion.

I've read just about all the books on the Korean war (1950-1953) published in the English language, and this one is among the very best. If you're interested in what happened, and just want to read one book on the subject, I'd recommend this one highly. (I am a Korean War Veteran, BTW.)

I thought I would brush up on my knowledge of the first Korean War before the second one kicks off. Max Hastings is always a good read. It’s to read about the mistakes we made in Korea, in that we seem to repeat them in every generation.

This is the best book on the subject I have read so far. The author is British and therefore has no patriotic ax to grind about either the motives or the performance of the United States in this war. He acknowledges that Syngman Rhee was a brutal and corrupt dictator who committed numberless atrocities against his own people, but he makes a compelling argument that the regime under Kim Il Sung was far worse, and given the status of North Korea today the argument is hard to refute. The Americans were guilty of ignorance and lack of tactical vision, but Hastings affirms that their motives for fighting the war were sound. Here is his concluding statement: "If the Korean War was a frustrating, profoundly unsatisfactory experience, more than thirty-five years later it still seems a struggle that the West was utterly right to fight."

Hasting's military histories are uniformly excellent - this one is no exception. For the American reader the book is particularly interesting in that the emphasis is on Commonwealth forces. I recommend it.

I had to purchase this book for a program design course I was taking. Since I knew very little about UML I was looking forward to reading it, especially since I knew that this book was the 'bible' of UML. About half-way through I quit reading the book because I wasn't learning very much. Here is the main problem. Fowler presents concepts using high-level, theoretical and sometimes incomplete terminology and doesn't illustrate with good examples. I frequently read and re-read passages but still left scratching my head uncertain what he was talking about. If he could have just included some concrete code examples, the book would have been much better. I also detect a little of the purist and elitist mentality in Fowler's writing. Purist in the sense that he is a true believer in UML and elitist in the sense that he doesn't think it necessary to explain some of the things he is talking about. Finally, there is some of the artificially-inflated complexity that comes with certain fields in CSci. If you really want to have a practical understanding of UML to use in your coding or programming, this is not the book for you. All IMHO.

Fantastic, this is what puts software design into a new world and cuts through all the impractical clutter of full UML. Fowler shows mastery by cutting everything that is NON essential from UML and showing a methodology (I'm a distinct fan of the idea of UML 'sketching') that generates a novel language of high practical relevance for large softwqare bodies, in fact any kind of domain specific knowledge structuring (building relationsships in an ontology in a sense). Masterful ...

As the front page subtitle states, this is a brief guide to the UML. It is also a good one.The first chapter is an introduction to UML, including some short history on the language. The second chapter covers the Development Process with a quick overview of a couple of them - i.e. Agile, RUP, ...- followed by some guidance on choosing the right one.The following chapters cover the main UML diagrams, respectively, the Class, Sequence, Object, Package, Deployment, Use Case, State Machine, Activity, Communication, Composite Structure, Component, Collaboration, Interaction Overview and Timing Diagrams. At the end, there is an appendix that summarizes the changes between UML versions. Not all of the diagrams get in-depth coverage. Whereas Class Diagrams get the most attention of the author with two chapters specifically dedicated to them, Object, Deployment, Communication, Composite Structures, Component, Collaboration, Interaction Overview and Timing Diagrams get only a few pages, between two and four. Some of them are just limited to the sample diagrams that illustrate the chapter, with no or little text to support them. Rather than a shortcoming, this seems to be ensuing from the author's willingness to have the book limited to a few pages - 150 exactly, without the appendix -, covering what he considers to be essential. As such, this book is no replacement for the three classic UML books, i.e. the User's Guide, the Reference Manual and the Unified Process of the Booch/Jacobson/Rumbaugh Object Technology Series that the reader, in my opinion, will anyway have to go through until he/she gains sufficient working proficiency with the language. If the reader's intention is so, he/she'll be better inspired reading "UML Distilled" after, or better, in parallel with the User's Guide, diagram after diagram and have a look at the Reference Manual on selected dictionary terms, as necessary. The Unified Process book can be read independently. This is not a book an OOA/OOD. As prerequisite, the reader is expected to be comfortable enough with OO concepts such as Class, Object, Relationship, Aggregation, Composition, Inheritance, etc. Although not required, working proficiency with a former OO modeling method - e.g. Fusion, in my case - will help.

When I first read this book I thought, hmm, that's a really good first step to learning UML. I then read many other books including Larman's Applying UML and Patterns. After some time and achieving decent knowledge in OOAD, I took another look at UML Distilled. I realized that I missed out on about half the concepts because I really didn't have the background. This book is a goldmine of distilled information. The way the author seperates the perspectives is much better appreciated when the reader has some background. I would recommend reading this to get a start in UML, then reading some intro OOAD books and finally coming back to this and reading it again. The only complaint I have is that you need to read slowly because Fowler has something good to say just about everywhere.Definitly a classic.

There are hundrends if not thousands of articles and tutorials floating around on the net which are written on or around or about UML, some try to cover everything in a shallow manner, some try going deep into a very specialized aspect of one kind of diagrams. As a software architect, people like me need something concise and handy which we can constantly refer to which chalking out different diagrams which are required in software project following RUP methodology, this book serves this purpose in an excellent manner and I am certainly happy using it for the last couple of projects I handled. One thing I must say is that I found the coverage of 'Development Process' (Ch 2) very sketchy and superficial, and most probably it does not even belong in a book so focussed in being used as a reference for a software project. There is only one more thing which I expected from this book. Different UML diagrams are sketched and used in different stages of a project, if only these were overlapped with RUP project phases (inception, elaboration, construction and transition) along with a representative of other documents used in those phases the use of the UML diagrams could have been realized from a better perspective.I would highly recommend the book 'Building J2EE Applications with RUP' (Peter Eeles, Kelli Houston and Wojtek Kozaczynski) for the J2EE practitioners, these two books complement each other very well in the J2EE/RUP world.

#61,000 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

There are so many things wrong with this book. To start, the cover photo shows pasta - not Keto. The interior photos are low quality Black & White and do not always depict the food in the recipe. Example: the granola on page 26 clearly shows rolled oats in the photo (not Keto), and is different from the recipe. On page 70 you’ll see another image of pasta salad (not Keto) as the first image in the lunch recipes section. There is no corresponding recipe. Page 108 features a potato salad (not Keto). The portobello burger on page 28 calls for portobello mushrooms as the bun, but the photo clearly shows bread being used. Then there’s the awful, childish writing. Example: for the pancakes on page 55 the author writes “take out a frying pan and fry the pancakes on both sides”. There is amateur, bad writing throughout. While the cover of this books states it is “a complete guide for beginners” it does nothing to explain what Keto is, and features recipes that any true Keto expert would cringe at. What a waste of money!

The recipes in this book are so delicious. Also, I see that people are getting confused about the "5-ingredient" part in the title. There's obviously more than 5 ingredients needed. Each recipe has its 5 main ingredients, not 5 ingredients total in the book. My favorites are the jalapeno bacon egg cups, shrimp and avocado salad, and the Parmesan baked chicken.

This cookbook definitely helps me stay motivated to eat healthy and meant to benefit a beginner and change your lifestyle and it discusses where fats and calories come in when it comes to diet and weight loss and contains the following to help you meal prep keto diet meals effectively and inside this book you will find delicious and satisfying meal prep-friendly breakfast recipes, delectable and filling meal prep-friendly lunch recipes and much more and all the recipes inside are keto friendly thus geared towards weight loss and a healthy lifestyle and even I will be able to stick to my diet with these quick to prepare keto recipes and if you are short of time and needs detailed advice on prepping your food for your Keto diet, this might be the ideal book for you and i have learn everything to grasp to success prepare ketogenic meals prior to while not losing all the advantages of the keto diet and i have also discovered a way to mix the keto diet with meal homework to finally say good-bye to wasted cash time and energy on unneeded looking journeys and forgotten rotten food within the back of electric refrigerator and even i will be able to stick to my diet with these quick to prepare keto recipes!

I purchased this book because I’m on maternity leave and would like to stay keto. Normally I cook every day, but it’s harder now. This book gave a lot of ideas on how to cook things ahead, use fewer dishes, gives ideas for paleo keto, and other options on how to make the recipe different. There’s no pictures, which can deter some people, but I’m ok with it. This has made it easier to stick with keto, have delicious meals while doing minimal work and clean up. We even had some of the ingredients for a few meals in the freezer already! This is my go to book right now.

I like it! Very impressed with book. Just started on my Keto Life change and this book helped me so much. It gave me the tools I needed to start Keto and explained the standard diet. The book is 75% recipes and 25% info and instruction. I’ve tried a few of the recipes already and they were easy to follow and tasted very good. Great book! Nice

I like it! This is a very helpful and useful diet for the beginner's.From this book you will learn about the most useful tips for meal prep, the benefits of meal prep and easy mistakes to avoid,a massive list of popular keto meal prep recipes that taste great and won't keep you in the kitchen for hours and much more.I hope you must find this book useful. I love the information in this book, the structure, nutrition tips meal planning and such. My favorite recipes are classic deviled eggs, spinach and cheddar muffins, French style strawberry omelette, and Italian style eggs with mortadella bits. I received this book for free for my honest review. Lovely.!!!

Wow! Yummy! We saw the TV documentary about this diet and were impressed by the results this man got following this diet. The book is clear and concise and contains recipes in the back of the book. If you are disciplined enough to be able to fast for two days a week, it will work wonders for you. I've lost 7 pounds this past month, Fasting isn't easy when you really love food, but it is rewarding. Nice one! Great book is here!
