Jim Shepard is the author of seven novels, including most recently The Book of Aron, five story collections, including Like You’d Understand, Anyway―a finalist for the National Book Award and won The Story Prize―and editor of the anthology Writers at the Movies. He lives in Williamstown, Massachusetts, with his wife, three children, and three beagles. He teaches at Williams College.

It may not be the best way to review a book, but all I have after reading Shepard are questions. Where is this society we live in headed? How fast are we going? How long can we continue to delude ourselves about our destination? Our destination? Our means of travel? Maybe a closer look through the moving window of our cinema can be helpful. The landscape outside as we press onward, or backward, continues to change and the clues about our direction are confusing and, yes, disorienting. Jim Shepard is with us at the window, pointing out the landmarks, orienting and reorienting our journey as we pass station after station. This is not a book for film buffs or budding screenplay writers, it is a book about finding what is lost. It is as important an atlas as has ever been compiled. Like the medium it uses to navigate, even its unflattering portraits are entertaining. Shepard’s wit is as incisive as his close ups. This collection is not to be ignored.

I don't know of any other movie reviewer who explores so astutely how certain movies reflect the political culture and psychology of our time. That's why I was compelled to re-read a couple of my favorites almost immediately after finishing them the first time.When every political leader is a feckless narcissist or untouchable sociopath, it says something about where we're headed as a people. As an audience we are so easily seduced into sympathizing with maniacal or irredeemably flawed characters, entertained by sugar-coated history (see the essay about Saving Private Ryan) so long as the spectacle is profoundly visceral.My favorite essay argues that Chinatown is a stab at America's irreversible nihilism, driven by Polanski's intentionally macabre humor.It'd be nice if we could look back a decade or so from now and begin to see these essays as deeply jaded and more reflective of their time than the movies themselves. But fortunately (and perhaps unfortunately), that doesn't seem very likely.
Jim Shepard has long been one of my favorite short story writers. I was fortunate enough to meet him at a local bookstore where I bought this collection of essays. Mostly he discusses how movies reflect the mindset of the America that gave birth of them whether from Stephen Spielberg reminding the audience of heroism in the midst of the Holocaust or from Terrence Malick and Roman Polanski exposing the corruption at the heart of the American dream. He ties these back to the attitude of a public that elect leaders who keep getting us into disastrous wars. Highly recommended.
superb readable essays which greatly extended my understanding of the movies referenced, and gave me reasons to watch again with an enhanced understanding.Thinking about it I realise that I have rather casually seen some of these works on tv without really paying attention to the subtleties involved.I need to learn more about Mr shepards work.
