The gorgeous array of culinary dishes, mouthwateringly demonstrated by photos and stills against a rustic and very Persian background can only whet the appetite of the sophisticated foodie. What I particularly liked about Sinaee's book is the wonderful historical context she provides on Iran and the way these dishes have roared into her culinary pallet from the depths of history. She speaks from the vantage point of someone who has traveled the length and breadth of Persia; her father was an officer in the Iranian Imperial Army and was often deployed in various locations in Iran. What I admired about the book, as well, was the diverse choice of dishes from various regions of Iran illustrating the ethnic mosaic of this fascinating country. What I also sense in some of these beautiful illustrations is the artistic taste of the maestro chef herself. Her photo of the delicious Morassa' Polo (Jeweled Rice) with barberries and almonds and silvered pistachio and orange peel vermicelli has been illustrated with refined taste like some gem from the vaults of Safavid treasury. It is incidentally a dish that can be enjoyed by vegetarians as much as meat eaters; there is a feast of ideas there for vegetarians such as the Baghala Ghatogh (beans with garlic and eggs) from Iran's Caspian provinces. Sinaee has selected an eclectic mix of Iranian culinary gems including sweet snacks (walnut cookies), seafood (stuffed fish), Persian stews (lamb and rhubarb) and of course non-meat dishes. In her book, barberries become rubies, pomegranates red diamonds, saffron gold dust and mint emerald. It really is a rich tapestry but above all it celebrates diversity of colours, ethnicity, locations and tastes. She has also included photos of her family to add a personal touch as this book is a personal adventure for her many travels and fond childhood memories that has turned her into this very interesting food writer. I loved the book; it is highly recommended.

What we call Persian cuisine has been shaped by the Persian Empire’s ancient expansion, trade on the Silk Road, and the wide range of climates within Iran. Regional cooking in southern Iran has been influenced by Indian, Arab and African cuisines. The recipes in the book are taken from Gilan, Mazandaran, Azarbaijan, Kurdistan, Hormozgan, and Khuzestan.Persian food is based on the theory of “hot” and “cold”: high-energy, high-protein foods are considered “hot” (no relation to spicy), while many vegetables and fruit (particularly sour ones) are “cold.” Persian meals are a careful balance of these elements; it’s believed that too much “hot” food can cause rashes and hot flashes, while too much “cold” food causes digestive issues and low energy. A meal may balance out each of these elements in the same dish; for example, walnuts are “hot” so they are served with pomegranate (“cold.”).Like my country of Japan, Persian cuisine places great importance on seasonality and the first vegetables of the season, which are called “first of the harvest.” The Persian calendar is based around nature, beginning in March with Noruz (the spring equinox). Iran’s seasonal festivals (including harvest and rain) predate Islam by some 1,400 years. Persian cuisine places high priority on hospitality, and above all, beautiful presentation; dishes are garnished with saffron, yogurt, nuts, caramelized onions or herbs.Beginning with spring, many seasonal fruits and veggies are incorporated, including rhubarb, onion and egg soup, lamb and rhubarb stew, fava bean and dill frittata, and rice with fava beans and dill (thankfully fresh fava beans, or “soramame,” are also a springtime staple here in Japan!). Summer finds lighter dishes using apricots, plums, cherries and mulberries, as well as chilled soups and cold salads, from the refreshing chilled yogurt and cucumber soup, rice with sour cherries, smoky eggplant dip, and zucchini with garlic, yogurt, and toasted rose petals to refreshing rosewater ice cream with pistachios and a melon and rosewater smoothie. Autumn is the season for quince, squash, pomegranates, pistachios and barberries. Heartier stews and dishes like duck in walnut sauce, lamb and dried plum steew, herbed meatballs and polos (pilavs) are rounded out with stuffed quinces, and butternut squash pancakes. Chilly winter features dried legumes, dried fruits, nuts and wheat noodles, like noodle soups, stews, hotpots, and hearty polos. The “Basics” chapter provides recipes for important elements like steamed rice, breads (taftun, barbari), salads, pickles, garnishes, and drinks.The food photography (styled and shot by Maryam) is absolutely stunning, with beautifully plated and arranged dishes in an explosion of color and textures. The edges of the pages feature brilliant ceramic tiles and geometric designs, while black and white family photos and scenes from everyday life give a personal touch to the beautiful food photography. Recipes include both metric and US measurements, which I greatly appreciated as I prefer to cook by weight rather than volume, particularly when baking. There is also a glossary of Persian cooking terms.I own numerous Persian cookbooks, and “From the Land of Nightingales and Roses” has quickly become one of my favorites due to the wide range of regional recipes, ease of finding most ingredients (I keep a fairly well stocked Persian pantry of barberries, spices, dried limes and dried herbs on hand), cultural tidbits, and beautiful photography – it is also highly accessible for vegetarians as many of the vegetable and rice dishes are vegetarian or can easily be made so. The flavor combinations are outstanding too: I loved the inclusion of currants and dates in the rice and green lentils with brown butter eggs, or the saffron potato frittata, which combines mashed potatoes, walnuts, cinnamon, and rose petals in a beautifully layered dish that also holds up well for leftovers (it reminded me of the Spanish potato omelette I used to eat as an exchange student in Spain).Fans of Yotam Ottolenghi, Persian, and Middle Eastern cuisine will want to add this to your collection as soon as possible – it’s as close as you can get to a food tour of Iran (which is probably outside the realm of possibility for many readers).

Inspiration from one of the most important figures of our time.

If you are looking for things to contemplate while meditating, this book may be good for you. I, though, was very disappointed. I was hoping for more of a discussion on points. Though I do recall that they said that the lessons were short, I didn't realize how short they would be. This teaches me to buy samples from now on of books. The lessons were a paragraph, maybe two paragraph tops. To me, they felt like quick thoughts jotted down in a journal.I'm not saying they weren't good lessons...but I was hoping for more of a discussion on why a person should follow these lessons...maybe with bits of John Paul's own life experience. Most of us probably know what we should do, but I like books that tell you why we have these morals...for I find that morals are easier to uphold when consequences of breaking them are laid out (and I don't mean hellfire and damnation--there are actually very practical reasons to uphold morals).

I was disappointed with the book. It goes into great detail of the difficulties and expense of "moderating" the content of the millions of comments submitted; mostly related to obscenity, nudity, and hate mail. There are no social implications here; these are strictly business considerations, to keep as many clicks coming in to satisfy the advertisers. To me, the more important consideration would have been the political comments and proliferation of fake news

I highly encourage anyone that’s interested in the inter workings of the internet to look into this book.

I was involved with content moderation at numerous early internet companies - Blogger, Flickr, LiveJournal. A justice might have once said that identifying pornography is easy because "you know it when you see it," but content moderation actually involves an infinite number of shades of gray. Deciding what is offensive, hateful, obscene, etc. is extraordinarily hard work. Few appreciate the complexity of the problem, let alone the ugly reality of what it means for technology companies to be deciding what is and isn't acceptable. This astonishing book by Tarleton Gillespie offers a critical insight into the political nature of the seemingly mundane work of deciding what is and isn't appropriate on platforms. Companies like Facebook have a complex governance challenge in front of them and there is no way for them to be neutral arbiters of social norms, and yet, because of their services, they must. As Gillespie argues, all algorithmic systems are political in nature, regardless of whether or not engineers want them to be. And all content moderation practices involve deciding the norms and boundaries of cultural values.This is a thoroughly researched and rich book examining a defining issue of our time, written in a delightful manner that is easy to read while also being extraordinarily informative. Why aren't all tab books released like this? Why always do we only get a choice of easy guitar, guitar and bass guitar transcribed books? The purpose of music is to play as a band thank you very much Mr Hal Leonard and you lot down at Cherry Lane!!! As for this release, it's nothing short of brilliant.. the solos are all there, so are the piano, keyboard and orchestrated parts, even drum and subtle percussion tabs are here... all correct and in their proper places... what more could you ask for? Ok, it's easy to get lost if you aren't too into music theory (Codas anyone?), but who cares? The Chili's seem to pull it off pretty easily enough! The only critism I have is that the bass parts don't distinguish between when Flea plays with his fingers pizzicato style and when he's slapping the hell out of his four string beastie, also it isn't too clear on what sorts of effects should be used in what parts of Frusciante's solos. I guess he's keeping his guitar wizardry a secret still... but anyhoo, I'm glad I got this instead of the bass only version... you can share it around with your mates this way!

When I ordered this book, I wasn't expecting it to be the best book, but when I got it, I was amazed that it was precisely accurate. I thought that it was going to be without some of the music, but all of it is in there. And I think it forgot to mention that there was guitar tab in there if you read music that way, and there is, so no worries. It's pretty cool though because I'm able to play some of the stuff on piano and bass, and this is the best way to go because otherwise you'd have to pay 15 or more dollars to get the separate books. Plus, it's cheaper than buying it for regular price which is why I bought it off of amazon rather than going to some other music store. All in all, i'm pretty satisfied with this. I'd say that if you're really looking into buying a "By the Way" book, I'd go with this.

Both the writing and the supporting arguments are models of clarity, intellectual modesty and common sense. What a sad contrast to the empty headed slaganeering of today's political and moral discourse.

John Stuart Mill is one of the giants of political/practical philosophy.This book is very densely written; you get a full page worth of reading on each page. The book was written in 1859. So the language is a bit more formal and strange compared to contemporary writings. But it's very readable. He explains the thought process behind his opinions. They're very logical. If be reading And think "Gee, never thought of it that way" Or "so that's why things are the way they are". And, for a book written 160 years ago, it is surprising my relevant.TheHighly recommended!!

A solid work that everyone should read, regardless of political alignment. How do we balance societal well being with personal liberty? In an ideal democracy, the will of the government becomes the will of the majority, so how do we protect the minority? Why are free speech and diversity (even eccentricity) so desirable in the first place? Mill has some ideas.Pros: One of the most practical pieces from the utilitarian thinkers of the era. Mill was an atheist and decidedly anti-Christian, and I state this for those who need to take this into account before reading an essay on world view. Despite this fact, John Stuart Mill would be most displeased with how Christians and religious conservatives are being vilified these days. He is definitely NOT in favor of shutting down dissenting opinions or open discussions, and the book has some potent quotes that could be applied to today's "politically correct" shenanigans. He makes a very strong case against the type of soft tyranny we are seeing today with regard to prevailing opinions on controversial topics. He clearly states that protection from government tyranny is not enough; there is also the tyranny of popular opinion toward unpopular opinion, and that people should be protected from this as well. Timely and relevant. Warning: the book is short, but it is not an "easy read." Well worth it nonetheless.

I ihave read Mill's On Liberty three times now. The Bromwich and Kateb version is the most helpful, as we not only get to read Mill's essay, but 6 supplementary essays - two "introductions" and four sometimes critical "reinterpretations" by respected theorists.Milll's basic point is simple: people should be left free to think and do as they please unless what they are doing causes actual harm to others. Mill's essay is spent both giving reasons for this principle, and exlporing what the principle means in practice.He offers a plurality of reasons for his libertarian ideas, some utilitarian in nature and some based on (what some might call) natural law. Not only does freedom of action and thought encourage innnovation, keep public discussion vigorous, and lead to a more effective social network than government incursion, but people just-plain prefer directing their own lives to being directed from outside.Mill gets into sticky territory, however, when he talks about the libertarian principle in concrete terms, as his distinction between what is private and what is public is often less clear than he might want. Should persons be free to tell others to do harm to themselves? Yes. Should parents be free not to educate their children? No. Should "vice-merchants" like bars, gambling parlors, and pornographers be free to conduct business without heavy government regulation? No. Should people be free to marry a plurality of spouses? If mormon, yes. If British, no.My biggest criticism - and a criticism offered in Richard Posner and Jeane Bethke Elshtain's essays - is that Mill is all over the map when his principle is "put to the real world" because the distinction between public and private is just-plain fuzzy. Another interesting criticism, brought up in Elshtain's essay, is that Mill demonstrates a very unjustified bias in favor of experiment over tradition (where the former seems always presumed inferior to the latter).In short, I like Mill's essay but see it as an edifice built on not-quite-solid sand. Mill relies on seperate categories, public and private, that are just not clear and distinct enough to be distinct. (While Dewey may have gone too far in the "all acts are social" direction, I think Dewey hit closer to the truth.) This is why the six supplementary essays in this edition are a nice touch.

About the Author

Regina Doman, born in 1970 in Pennsylvania, graduated from Franciscan University of Steubenville and worked in New York City as assistant editor of Lay Witness magazine from 1992-1994, and wrote columns and articles for various publications. She has written many novels for young people. She and her husband Andrew live near Front Royal, Virginia, with their six children.

One of the best books I have ever had the privilege to read. It has such a WONDERFUL way to tell the story of how we come to be. I just can't express how much I loved this book. There are not words enough to express the sweetness of this story. I m looking forward to sharing this book when I am asked " where did we come from?" If I knew some my church members would not go off the deep end I would love to share it with my Sunday school class. I can't express how much I recommend this book for young and old alike. Ladies and some men some of you this will touch in a way that you may find yourself in tears it is very touching.

Since first discovering this book, I have purchased it for baby shower gifts, birthday and Christmas gifts for children, and recommended it to others. I use it each year in January when I teach a children's rosary group about respecting life. Saint Francis said, "preach the gospel every day, using words if necessary." Written in secular words, this book does just that. The illustrations are stunning, the words are written exceptionally well in a story format for children to understand, and the message is timeless. This book is a treasure and should be on every child's bookshelf.

Absolutely wonderful book!This is a unique and wonderful book for children or families that are expecting. It speaks from the perspective of the unborn child, so it is simple for little children to understand. The child while in the womb is talking to his/her angel, who is offering some guidance about this new and confusing world. Very beautiful and gentle images.I will be buying more as gifts. The poor reviews were from people who were anti religious, so if you are uncomfortable about talking to children about angel, this book is not for you.

This is a wonderful book, and I am so pleased to have been able to find it...unable to get it locally anymore. It makes a great gift for an expectant couple--my son in law actually read it aloud during the pregnancies and then would read it after the birth to the newborn and mommy.

My go to gift for parents expecting child #2! It warms a parent to read it and the older siblings love it. It is such a warm and friendly approach to life and a great prompt in discussing the life that we don't see with our earthly eyes.

I love this book. I first got it to read to my son when I was pregnant. He was so interested in it. Now I buy it for all my pregnant friends. So special to think of the bond between a person and their guardian angel.

This is the first book we read to our newborn daughter. Of course it was more for us than her at that time, but as she gets older she understands more and more that life is sacred even inside the womb. I love the gentle element of faith in it and I think the illustrations are good as well. My daughter is almost 7 months old now and I can tell that she recognizes the baby on these pages. Highly recommend this book for all ages!

I was given a copy of this book 12 years ago when pregnant with my daughter. I recently shared it with a pregnant friend to read to her 5 year old. Within 10 minutes we were purchasing their own copy. The 5 year old LOVES reading it.I would HIGHLY recommend this book.
