The first 70 pages read like a gushing freshman in their first week of critical thinking class. Not much to glean here that hasn't already been reiterated in Ted Talks of similar discussion. After much ado on page 77 the author discloses his three major strategies for increasing analytical thinking:1. Read books from more than one viewpoint2. Do some math. Math is good.3. Unplug and go for a walkEventually the author lets us in on his burgeoning secret, key take-away: "Analytical thinkers approach problems scientifically." ...You think?Not sure how this term paper made it to my recommended reading list but I instantly regretted spending more than a dollar for it.
As a programmer, I always used to chart new ways to solve complex problems, creating a process and algorithm. I used the same processes to solve business problems at well thanks to Business Process Improvement, which was mostly a new way to think about work! This book gets into these same things: using all that great business problem-solving experience to solve problems at home! As a math/science nerd, I always think different!I do wish there was more on the process of analyzing the statistics. We have great plans, but sometimes it's hard to catch the problems early. We had a process to manufacture PCs with a 2-color (green/orange) power light, but someone saved a penny per light by getting just blue. We sold about 14 million before tech support started getting calls about blue lights. Nobody knew but that one team who tried to save a penny. The green/orange light was used to diagnose power issues. Since the new lights couldn't change to another color, it caused amazing new problems! Luckily, we could make the blue light blink, so every customer had to be sent an update to make the light blink instead of change color to diagnose a hardware failure. It was a nightmare caused by one guy who didn't understand the process. Saved $1.5 million instantly, but cost over $10 million to get fixed. We did end up using blue lights though, with the update, it continues to save millions every year for the company. We got an award for thinking differently, and creating the process that fixed this in the end.I've also read a few of this author's other books, and am always excited to see more on the process of solving problems with new systems!
This book is a good primer to anyone who wishes to enhance his or her analytical thinking skills. I appreciated that this book went beyond the make lists and analyze what you see cliche useless advice, and presented actual examples of deep analysis translated to the language of a layman. ��It was cool that the author admitted, analytical thinking is not THE thinking skill we need, there are other types of thinking that are equally important such as synthetic thinking, creative thinking, critical thinking - the combination of these give us a clear picture of the world. Analytical thinking is one of the necessary thinking skills, not the only one. However, analytical thinking has to be learned and practiced - it is not intuitive. I found that through the explanations and exercises, this book is a good place to start the practice.
Yet another wonderful piece by this author! Informative, and a wonderful tool for any working professional. Everyone entering the workforce should read this. I typically use his works for our internal trainings, and it's been going wonderfully so far.
Albert Rutherford is growing to be one of my favorite authors, I read several of his books on critical thinking and each one I read he still offers valuable insight on the topic. If you still see everything as black and white and have one set way of thinking you need to read this book as soon as possible because having only one way of thinking can be very detrimental. Pick this book up and you will definitely learn something new and I hope you take that knowledge and improve your critical thinking.
This book does a good job of keeping you interested the whole way. It mentions important techniques such as the analytical thinking cycle. It also stresses that practicing such techniques is the only way to master them. There is also mention of synthetic and systematic thinking tied in with real world corporate examples such as Dodges ad campaigns. Overall, the book is structured well and makes what can be "boring content" interesting and relatable.
