If you didn't buy this book because you wanted Gossip! and Lots Of It! you'll come away very disappointed. Because Nelson Mandela she ain't. Fortunately for the rest of us, this book has plenty of gossip, drama and more. Wanna know what *really* (and by "really," I mean "according to Solo") went down in 2007? Than this is the book for you. But the rest of it isn't entirely a waste either. There's something absurdly compelling about this woman who feels very much at odds with society, has a vaguely confrontational, almost violent mindset about nearly everything, lives in a tiny cabin in the woods, and, oh yeah, is the best goalkeeper in the whole world. She's a real-life anti-hero, folks! There's also the usual ghostwritten nonsense, of course, with drama injected, and I'm not sure how I feel about it being written when it was (it just sort-of... ends - sequel bait!). But as crazypants celebrity autobiographies go, this is one of the better ones.
Given her success on the US National Women's Team and her fascinating background, I had high hopes for this book. Unfortunately, what I got was her lashing out at her critics and everyone she felt held her back. Very disappointing.
This was a good book about a small town girl who made it big with her athletic abilities. She goes in depth about her trials and tribulations during her time in the US National Team. She talks about the heartaches and the issues she was face with. She did not shy away from discussing the harder parts of her life, and for that I respect her. She is a strong woman who will not sugarcoat anything. She will tell it like it is. If you looking to read about a drive, passionate, strong willed woman, this is a good book for you.
I love soccer, and Hope Solo is not the kind of woman to hold her tongue so I knew what I'd be getting would be raw and probably a bit controversal, but full of drama and interesting stories. I was definitely not wrong about that, there were a lot of them, some making me like her and some not so much. I love that regardless of how people feel she's not afraid to be herself, although I'm not going to lie there were moments that her blatent honest had whiny undertones
Enjoyed reading about the life story, struggles, triumphs, discipline, support, non-support of a soccer star!
Without question Hope had some adversity to deal with! The media is good at simplifying issues or getting them wrong to make villains out of some stars and heros out of others. Humans are usually more complex than that. It was really nice to hear Hope's perspective of her experiences. It is an easy read and really shows the strength behind the world's greatest goalie.
Haven't finished, but so far I really enjoy. Hope had a tough life with some great people in her life. A little gritty but poignant as is her playing. Big fan of her have three daughters who played soccer heavily into college. Goes to show you you can do what you want with your life despite the odds. Always a sucker for a story of "hope."
I really enjoyed this book. I played soccer before Mia Hamm and the others and it was something girls could do when they were young but I never thought of it as a future. Hope Solo continues what the 1999 World Cup team started but she takes it much further. She is not all ponytails and lipstick, she is tough yet feminine. She is a true role model showing young girls they don't have to be meek and take it when others want to tear them down. Her spirit and toughness are the things that got her through a rough childhood and are the very things she needs on the field when players slam in to her or she has to sacrifice herself to make the save. She has no fear, but she's human and the story about how her own turn on her, that part was tough to read. However, what she has proven is that which does not destroy you, makes you tougher and it made her a lot tougher and even better at her sport. Anyone reading this book should learn how to take a bad situation and turn it around and build yourself up. You cannot control how others act but only your own reaction to it. This book is well written, I felt like I was on the field with her during some of the key games she describes. I knew the outcome of the games but I was still on the edge of my seat. She's honest, straightforward, and down to earth, yet she has her own spirituality and faith that carry her through tough times. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading inspirational stories. I've recommended it to my teenage daughter who has experienced mean girls in the dance world, and until Hope Solo she thought soccer players couldn't be beautiful and feminine, yet outspoken and tough. Hope is all of those things.
