a must-read if you are in the process. information contained is invaluable if you are serious about donation (giving or receiving) and the ethical issues pertinent. my brilliant child conceived thru egg donation,much of the success of which i attribute to this compilation. i wanted to understand the issues. age discrimination should be considered; it is real. happily this book introduces it in a rather realistic, if not terribly sensitive, way. my age at conception was 47; age discussion in the book did not trouble me in the least. other issues in the topic are so much more critical. they are clearly presented and well-discussed.

For anyone considering third party reproduction, this is a valuable and insightful resource. If / when I get pregnant though Egg Donation, I will use this book as a guide, referring to it over and over again.

Great book on helping you both decide on doing egg donation and understand the process of it. Brings up great questions to think about. Highly recommend!

Is a good book

After seeing all the 5 star ratings for this book, I did my best to find some redeeming value in this diatribe. I felt that I was constantly slapped in the face with the authors views that wanting to have a baby over the age of 40 was selfish and unfair to the child. I'd like to inform the narrow minded authors that at age 40 I'm a much better parent than I would ever have been in my 20's and 30's. I have just as much energy and a lot more patience! Not to mention that my parents at 65 are no where near the geriatric burdens that the authors predict for my children in the future. Parenting is challenging at any age, and to assume that someone under the age of 40 is any more prepared for the task is absurd. I want my money back!

I found this book to be really helpful in many ways--it offers lots of information and guidance and does so in a way that consistently demonstrates that the authors "get" the experience of infertility. Other reviews indicate that readers found the first edition to be biased against older moms but I found no evidence of this in the second edition. In fact, very much the opposite. My wife and I are both 43 and we feel like we're in a race against time. I felt that the authors understood and addressed our dilemma. The book is especially helpful in offering guidance about choosing a donor, which I find to be one of the most confusing and stressful aspects of egg donation. Perhaps more than anything, I came away from the book feeling that this really CAN be a good option for our family. While the authors seem to be talking primarily to women, I felt very much included in the readership and hope that other men (as well as women) will get a lot out of reading it.

I'll admit I came to Having Your Baby Through Egg Donation with hesitation. I'm about to turn 43 and very much focused on my age, so when I read criticism of the earlier edition for being "snarky" about older mom's, I assumed this book would only upset me. What I found instead was a compassionate discussion of age --one that acknowledged that women my age often have regrets and lots of questions. The authors do raise a question of whether it is fair to a child to have a mom who is in her "late 50's, even 60's" when she gives birth, but I didn't find anything that made me that 43 is "too old." And looking beyond the age issue, the book is filled with so much practical and wise advice, especially about topics like talking with family and friends. I don't plan to travel abroad for egg donation but was interested to learn about that option.

I picked up a copy of this book in my doctor's waiting room expecting that I'd glance through it and then read something that made me feel better like the latest copy of People. To my surprise, Having Your Baby Through Egg Donation was easy to read and more important, easy to like. It made me feel better and more hopeful hearing how women decide on egg donation and what our next steps will be if we decide to take that path. The book covers all aspects of egg donation--the emotions, the "how to's", the ethical and legal pieces and most encouraging, pregnancy and parenting. I'm planning on one more IVF cycle with my eggs but if it doesn't work, I think the first thing I will do will be to get my own copy of this book.
