With calendars getting so expensive, this is an attractive calendar for a reasonable price. This is my 2nd year of buying this calendar.

This is my third year in a row of buying this calendar for my desk at work. I use the past photos as wallpaper for my cubicle, and everyone who sees it exclaims about how pretty my garden desk is. The paper is high quality and the photos are gorgeous.

I will use this calendar in a few days. It will hang in my office where I am sure that in the midst of a busy day I can glimpse a view of the garden and be at peace. Great photos.

These are beautiful and well made calendars. I purchase one every year. My only suggestion is to make them with a coiled wire fastener. I use it so much, as a daily calendar, some of the pages came out this year.

2nd year got this and each year they change. Lots of colorful cozy goregeous pictures. It perfect for a wall but not practical to write in cuz small blocks in pale grey. I buy 2 calenders per year...1 for wall and second to write in each day...Goldistock calendar for writing and Secret Gardens for wall.

What gorgeous gardens! This will brighten my home all year. Full of wonderful ideas for designs and plant selection.

I purchase this wall calendar every year. Love the pictures. Great quality paper & perfect size for a wall calendar. Will continue to buy.

Most beautiful photos I’ve ever seen in a calendar. Love it!

CHAPTER ONEWHEN THE UNTHINKABLE HAPPENSLife, in many ways, is like a game. We all live by a set of rules that govern sane, socialized behavior, and when we all play by these rules, people live happy lives in relative safety. These rules are, in essence, a set of agreements that we have with each other. For example, on the road we all agree to stop at red lights and drive on the right side of the painted line. When we fail to abide by these rules, people often get hurt or killed. Most of us live according to age-old agreements about ethical behavior-- think of the Ten Commandments or the Golden Rule. All societies have remarkably similar ethical codes when it comes to civilized behavior. From a very early age, we are taught these rules until they become part of our social DNA.The problem with this whole agreement scenario is that obviously, not everyone plays along. There are those among us who do not recognize or abide by the rules the rest of us acknowledge and respect. These individuals are predators. In some cases, predators have consciences, and in other cases, they do not. Asocial predators know how to capitalize on your desire to be a decent, ethical person so they can use it against you to get what they want.THE FEMALE ADVANTAGEAs a woman, you have a special gift--an advantage, really--that many men do not. Most women, even at a very early age, are remarkably good at reading and interpreting the significance of nonverbal cues: body language, posture, gait, expression, grooming, clothing choices, and so on. By comparison, most men are almost comically inept when it comes to reading all but the most overt signals. Whereas men's ability to read nonverbal cues is essentially like a binary code--they either see it or they don't-- women are able to pick up on a rainbow of nuanced signals, as if they're seeing everything in full color while men are seeing in black-and-white.Think of this set of typically female skills as a natural early warning mechanism (I often describe it as radar) that gives you precious moments to avoid violence instead of needing to deal with it on a physical level. My goal in this book is to make you aware of the many different types of potentially violent behavior.Asocial violence is designed to be difficult to spot--which is why you need to trust and use your radar so you'll never end up in a dangerous situation. You don't want to live in a constant state of fear. But simply knowing that you have the tools to save your own life--and more specifically, that you have the power to use these tools--can dramatically impact your ability to survive a potentially violent encounter.YOUR HISTORY AS PREYThere's a saying that wildlife biologists use to differentiate between predators and prey: "Eyes in the front--I like to hunt. Eyes on the side--I like to hide."Your eyes aren't on the sides of your head. You're no soft bunny or squirming fish. Humans are designed as predators. That means you were also born with the tools to tap into this power to do damage to another human when necessary. You just have to give yourself permission to reconnect with these innate tools when the situation warrants it.Throughout this book, I will share the many, many ways that you can make better choices that will steer you clear of dangerous situations, whether you're at the ATM, in a nightclub, or simply driving down the street. By far the best way to save your own life is to avoid putting it in danger in the first place--and I will show you dozens of ways to do just that. But I also recognize that you probably have not come to this book as a blank slate--chances are that something bad has already happened to you. Whether it was physical violence, emotional abuse, or a shaky feeling that you narrowly escaped a creepy guy on a dark street, you may have had an experience that left a lasting mark on your psyche. By taking a look at your history, we'll examine how your prior run-ins with predators may have affected your self-image so you can work toward building your confidence and empowering yourself to live a safer, freer existence.I'll introduce you to the very ugly world of violence, and the only thing that actually works against it--causing injury. Although unpleasant, it's imperative that I do so, because most of us are completely unfamiliar with this stark reality. Let me assure you, though: The moment you experience violence, you'll never ignore your instincts again--ever. Experiencing it (or even narrowly escaping it) is learning the hard way, and I hope that never happens to you.The more I can show you about how a predator operates, the better you'll be at avoiding the deadly games they play.ALWAYS TRUST YOUR INSTINCTSMarta and her husband, Jeff, took a trip to Turkey. Both are highly educated and well traveled, and neither would strike you as a typical victim if you met them. In fact, Jeff is a big man--he stands six foot eight and has the physique of an NFL linebacker. Their guide warned them about walking around Ankara by themselves, but the city seemed completely safe, with lots of American tourists. After about an hour of relaxed sightseeing, Jeff spotted a local bazaar that another tourist had mentioned to him the previous day. They decided to have a look, and after buying a few souvenirs, they sat down to have some Turkish coffee. As they rested up from their long walk, the couple savored the many sights and sounds, snapping pictures of the various food vendors and enjoying snacks with their coffee. Before long, two local men at the next table started up a conversation with Jeff. They expressed their fondness for the American tourists they had met, and relief that the Americans they'd met didn't seem to be prejudiced against Muslims, despite what local news programs were saying. Both men were charming, well dressed, and seemingly sincere. Still, although Marta couldn't put her finger on why, her instincts told her something wasn't right. After ten or fifteen minutes of conversation, one of the men offered them some small cookies that looked similar to Oreos. "These cakes are famous in Ankara--people travel many miles just to taste these--you must try them!" one of the men insisted.Marta's instincts screamed, "Don't eat them!" but her desire to be polite overpowered her inner radar. Marta and Jeff each ate a few cookies, which were laced with an unknown drug. The only thing that saved them was the fact that Jeff's size meant the drug didn't have a significant effect on him. He managed to fend off the two men, although he was injured in the process. These two predators knew exactly how to manipulate social conventions. They built up a lot of social goodwill before they attacked. And Marta and Jeff ignored their instincts and assumed everyone around them was playing by the same social rules. Asocial violence uses these rules against you. As Marta recounted this nightmare scenario to me, I could sense that she would never ignore her instincts again. It could have been worse for Marta and Jeff, but they got lucky (and I never suggest betting your life on luck!).MYTHS ABOUT RAPERape is a violent crime that is greatly misunderstood in our society. Our society harbors certain myths about rape that make it difficult for women to understand these crimes, let alone report them. The blame-the-victim stigma not only prevents women from seeking help, but also perpetuates myths that get women killed. Let's set a few to rest.MYTH: Rape is a sexual act.TRUTH: Rape is an act of brutal violence that has nothing to do with sex. Rape is all about power and domination and aggression. Instead of equating rape with "rough sex," think of it as being like a stabbing or a shooting. The rapist uses his penis as a weapon, just like a gun or a knife. That definitely is not sex.MYTH: Most rapes are committed by strangers in dark alleys.TRUTH: Four out of five rapes are committed by people the victims know.MYTH: "Date rape" isn't "real" rape.TRUTH: Rape is rape. Anytime a woman is forced or coerced against her will into having sex with someone, whether she just met him, has kissed him, or even married him, that is rape.MYTH: Women get over rape pretty quickly.TRUTH: Women can suffer physical and emotional trauma for years, even decades, after being raped.MYTH: The only rape that "counts" is intercourse.TRUTH: Women can be raped or sexually assaulted in dozens of sickening ways.MYTH: Rape is not very common.TRUTH: One woman in six will be raped in her lifetime; one in four female college students will experience a rape or attempted rape while in school.Myth: When women get drunk or wear slutty clothes, they are asking to get raped.TRUTH: Nothing a woman does, wears, says, or even thinks makes it okay to rape her. "No" means "no"--in every setting, in every relationship, in every encounter. Anyone who rapes a woman is a rapist, whether he's a thug with a knife in an alleyway, a frat boy with a beer bong and a roofie, or a husband who gets forceful because he thinks his wife "owes" him sex.Forget the excuses. There are no valid reasons. Rape is rape.NEVER ASSUME ANYTHINGIn my training classes, I always play a particular YouTube video as an example of what asocial violence looks like. In this video, a highly trained female police officer has pulled over a man who has multiple outstanding warrants for felony offenses. The man's young daughter sits in the passenger seat, and so the officer doesn't pull out her gun. In turn, she assumes that the girl's presence will prevent the felon from becoming violent. In essence, the officer thought she had an unspoken social agreement with this man.She was very wrong. In full view of his terrified daughter, the felon methodically beats the officer by throwing her to the ground and punching her nine times in the head. In the video, the commentator states that keeping a safe distance gives you more time to react to aggression. The officer was trained in what to do, but her social conditioning led her to believe that people don't attack other people in front of children, and that took precedence over her training. She could have handled the stop safely and effectively, but she allowed her sense of social decency to override her extensive police training. This violent criminal probably assumed the officer would "play by the rules" and used that knowledge against her. If the felon had been alone, I'd bet anything that that day would have gone down much differently.Think you'll pay attention to your instincts the next time your radar goes off? If so, just remember that this highly trained police officer knew she was dealing with a desperate, dangerous felon, and yet she still fell prey to thinking that because the felon's young daughter was present, he would be cooperative. She was quite mistaken, and she could have been killed because of it.DON'T BE AFRAID TO ACTCatherine entered the ground floor of a four-story parking lot with two friends. Their cars were parked on the first floor; hers was on the third. As they walked in, she noticed a guy who appeared to be watching them by the garage entrance. He was well dressed, but there was something creepy about him: The hair on the back of her neck stood up, her adrenaline surged, her heart rate increased, and she got a queasy feeling in her stomach. She considered asking one of her friends to walk her to her car, but then felt silly and gave the guy the benefit of the doubt. The creepy feeling faded as she justified heading to the elevator alone. "He's all the way over by the entrance. He's nowhere near me."She got in, pushed "3," and when the door opened on her floor, the creepy guy was right there, his body inches from hers, blocking her from fleeing the elevator. For a moment she stood paralyzed, and he lunged at her. This guy wanted something--who knows what. It doesn't matter; it wasn't right. When he lunged, there was no time to ask questions.Fortunately, Catherine had taken one of my Target Focus Training classes. Her training kicked in and she took action. She immediately identified a target on the guy (his groin) and a weapon in her own hand (her briefcase). In one fluid motion she stepped forward and smashed the briefcase with all her force into the guy's groin. He moved exactly as she had learned in class he would: He bent forward in agony, reflexively raising his chin. That involuntary reflex provided Catherine with a second target: She slammed all her body weight into his temple using a hammer fist (the balled- up pinky side). The combined force of her weight and the impact with the elevator door knocked this guy out. She had injured him twice even though he was much bigger and stronger than she was. His size hadn't mattered--her targeting had. With the guy out cold, Catherine felt safe enough to run and call security. In an interesting twist, by the time security arrived, the guy was gone. He wasn't sitting there, nursing his injuries. So we can't know for certain what his intentions were--he never had to explain himself. Was it all a misunderstanding? We'll never know.Catherine's immediate feeling was "Thank god I acted." Her husband had signed her up for my class, and she admits she'd never have come on her own. As with you, or any of us for that matter, violence was not something she wanted to dwell on. It was something that might happen to other people, not to her. But without training, her story might have had a very ugly ending.Later she began questioning herself. Why hadn't she trusted her instincts, the nonverbal cues her body was giving her--the hair rising on the back of her neck, the queasy feeling that something was absolutely wrong--the moment she'd spotted the guy? Why had she put herself in danger? Now, the question you must ask yourself is What would I have done?AVOIDING VIOLENCE AT ALL COSTSThe three stories I've shared in this chapter have different details and somewhat varied outcomes, but they all share a very important theme: In each case, an otherwise smart, capable woman placed herself in unnecessary peril because she squelched her innate survival instincts in deference to her strong desire to "follow the rules" of a sane, civilized society.

As former military and law enforcement, and having taught womens' "defensive" tactics pro bono since the 60s, I have found very few good books to recommend to women on the subject. I was in the process of writing one myself dealing with risk but put it on hold, as I would be competing with books filled with ignorance, self-promotion, and glitz along with dangerous delusions about the dangers and issues involved in predator attacks on women. I guess I like it because he sounds like me ... and some others such as the "guy from L.A."I will be recommending this book to the women participating in what will probably be my final women's defensive tactics class. Larkin's book is not so much a discussion about tactics but about "mindset," about using body mechanics as tools, and most importantly, about the reality of violence against women. Without a "right" mindset, no tactic - except luck - will work against a predator. Do you feel lucky? Willing to take that risk?I stumbled on Tim Larkin many years ago in my past life and he suddenly resurfaced. With this book and his own tactical style, he addresses the issues of violence in a clear and unambiguous manner, very straightforward - and his approach is correct! Unorthodox, but absolutely correct. The only successful "defensive" technique is the one that ends it quickly. I could comment more about a society that supports violence or at least violent individuals, but not the victim, where the evildoer is never to blame, only society and the victim. No individual responsibility. No comment!I disagree with Larkin's use of the word violence in the context of defense, and would substitute the word "force." But I do understand his choice, as it grabs one's attention. I did not see it in his book, but he should mention that if you are armed, which will soon be against the law as only criminals should have guns, you probably won't get a chance to get to your gun before an attack. So one needs an immediate physical response! This book gets you thinking in the right direction. It does point out about differentiating between asocial and antisocial behavior, and the legal consequences of your actions. It does not delve into the gray areas of joining in certain social behaviors and the possible aftermath. It also does not emphasize in the strongest possible terms of awareness, perception and avoidance of adverse situations. It highlights it, though, and is on target.I applaud the book and its author and heartily recommend it to women worldwide who want to cut through the nonsense [I changed my descriptive noun] that is out there and learn how to survive. The book points you in the right direction. His videos fill in the blanks, as they should. You can't cover it all in one book - regardless of all the experts telling you that they do.I abhor violence. But, when one is faced with violence from the human predator, what is one to do? This book spells it out. Shame on us for tolerating violence to women! But then, there is no shame today ... it is an outmoded concept in our morally-challenged society.

When I first opened this book I thought, "What! No pictures?! How can you learn self defense without seeing the techniques?" Then I sat down and began to READ. And this author's entire philosophy unfolded. This book is really about the mental aspects of defending oneself against an attacker who is bigger, stronger, and more insane than you, and how to "match" that person's intent solely as a way to disable him in order to survive. Plain and simple: It's brutal, it's ugly, and it gives the victim her best chance of getting out alive. The text is a bit redundant but I believe this is deliberate, as the author is introducing a radical mindset. Definitely a worthy eye-opening read for women; also for the elderly of any gender.

It is appropriate that the foreword was written by Tony Robbins as the book reads like a motivational book. As other reviewers have mentioned, there is sparse detail about the all important targets themselves, their specific reflexes, and which strikes are the most effective. As you near the end of the book, you realize the author is mentioning practice more often and you realize there is not enough pages left for Larkin to describe more than one or two techniques to practice. Surprise! - Target Focus Training requires more knowledge, a knowledgeable training partner, probably an instructor, etc. that you won't get with the book. This book is useful in 2 different ways: 1) As a philosophical primer to read before signing up for a Target Focus Seminar, Krav Maga, or other physical course. 2) For its useful contribution in understanding the difference between sport/social fighting and real violence and empowering readers with the image of using all-out violence as the (often only) means of surviving a real attack.

Great gifts. The author is serious about when and how to protect yourself. He is also clear about the appropriate time to act. A must read for everyone, not just women. However, women of all ages NEED this book to overcome the societal brainwashing of how a woman should act in times of threat . This is my third order. I hand them out to everyone I care about. Unfortunately, it appears we may need it sooner than we care to admit. These are different times we live in.

Larkin's book is not for the faint-of-heart. He explains methodically what one should do, immediately, upon being threatened with death by another person. His theory is, for the most part, the opposite of most "self-defense" techniques. Read the entire book through before you judge it...he's not a hit-first-ask-questions-later person unless someone is trying to rape/hurt/murder you. Especially liked the tips on MMA fighting (want to know where to hit a man to disable him? Check the list of MMA rules as to what's not allowed).

Having both taken Tim Larkin's course in person in Dallas, and reading his book, I know for sure that this program can help women (and men) is the most realistic way. Throughout my life I've taken Tae Kwon Do and many other courses for self-defense, confidence, fitness and health. But "Surviving the Unthinkable" is none of those. It's about how to think and act to control the attacker, if and when, you're ever in that situation. As a psychotherapist I know that some people are willing to change their behaviors so they don't hurt others; and I also know there are asocial, sociopathic, totally terrifying people that one cannot reason with. For your better peace of mind, safety, and survival -- read this book often! And get Tim Larkin's videos; take his courses.

Wow! Look at this book! Amazing one! 5:2 diet is the only diet that finally worked for me, this is what every other diet is trying to emulate without getting to the point. I have always had those 10-15 pesky pounds to lose and finally something worked! I eat healthy and I exercise and walk a lot and basically nothing worked. I kept losing weight on this diet even on non-diet days! I lost 13 pounds last year and have come off it due to whatever and now I am back! Let me tell you, I ate a pint of ice-cream in a week (on off-diet days) and still lost 7 pounds. INCREDIBLE. I recommend you buy the book though, because it boggles your mind how healthy it actually is and how this diet helps with chronic illnesses like diabetes, it is inspiring! Go be your best you!PS I do cheat on diet days by taking a relora or two relacore as they eliminate my appetite making it much easier to get through the day. I DO NOT recommend taking these daily though as they will mess with your blood pressure and kidneys. Twice a week works for me without side effects.I also drink get lost tea and fennel tea which are much healthier ways to reduce hunger feelings. Evenings are the worst so just go to bed early. :)Great to have this book as a gift!

Wow! I really like this book! Well done! I bought this book for my sister (age 64) b/c she was steadily gaining weight over the last few years and feeling miserable about it.After reading it (in just 1 evening), I was impressed with the research and I then sent the book to my sister (I live in NC; she lives in Fla). She began the program immediately and in 2 months she tells me she has lost 11 lbs. and is feeling so much better. She doesn't feel at all deprived by the fasting regime. I can't wait to see her. Amazing book! Like to have it!

Oh Wow! Nice book! Great to have it. I confess I didn't read the whole book because I saw the author's special - which is what led me to buy the book for my wife, actually. The idea is excellent, however, and although my wife and I are only two weeks into the plan we have already lost a number of pounds. The really great part about it is that the "fast" days aren't really fasting, just smaller portions of nutritious meals. It is a plan one can use over the long haul without feeling at all deprived. I am looking forward to losing about 50 pounds (make that about 45 now) and hope to improve it and lipid levels as well (without medication). I would love to surprise my physician at next year's physical. I'll try to write an updated review in about six months. Nice to have this book! Like. Good!

Intermittent Fasting is everything i need! This will sound like a broken record but it is my story so it is worth writing.I should have bought stock in Weight Watchers decades ago...I cannot even count the number of times I have joined but the first time was in 1991. Restart, quit, gain, self hatred etc year after year. Punctuated by the South Beach Diet, Intuitive/mindful gaining...I mean eating, HCG twice...and short runs with probably 30 diet books on amazon.Recently saw photos of myself at Christmas and felt desperate again...looked for another book. Saw this one, bought it.Read it.Wow.The part that jumps out at me is the “natural-ness of fasting (our ancestors were well acquainted) and the extreme health benefits. If I don’t lose a pound (oh but I will!), I kicked in numerous positive changes...all the way down to the celluar level yesterday during my first “fast day”. Health promoting things began happening to my likely sluggish brain cells, to borderline ldl levels, to insulin resistance (that has been living on borrowed time), slowly creeping cholesterol...a true, positive wake up call to my health and body! Also, changes to other health systems that I am too unfamiliar with to try to explain here...read the book! I am pretty excited about it. And here I sit, the next morning drinking my coffee (with creamer today!) and I am not in a huge rush for breakfast. I feel normal.Until yesterday, it had been a long time since I actually felt hungry. Amazing book! Love it!

Yes! We bought it! We are doing it! It is simple! Lovely book! The book is well written! The sample meals and examples and food lists and portions are easy to follow (100 grams equates we figured out to about 1 cup - that was the only "challenge" as we are not Brits) and it is fun to do and not hard at all. The we of us is husband and wife....and we enjoy "planning" the "fast" days menu and look forward to those days amazingly! We feel better on the FAST DAYS than we do on the "other" days. LOL! It is a great book and well work the few coins for purchase. It has changed our eating habits for the better as well as our cholesterol and blood pressure and glucose levels! That kind of says it all. BTW, we are senior citizens....if we benefited from this book, you can, too! Intermittent Fasting is awesome! Love that book! Great

Sadly, I agree with the other poor reviews. I wanted to like this book. But it doesn't compare at all favorably to "The Obesity Code" by Dr. Fung, or to "Delay, Don't Deny" by Dr. Gin Stephens (both of which are well researched, well written, & well edited). This book is not only poorly written, & not entirely factual, but also so poorly edited (if even edited at all) that it is painful to read. I spent the first ten pages playing a mind game of filling in the intended word rather than the word in the text.I believe that for anyone not completely fluent in American English, this text would almost be indecipherable.

I cannot understand the four and five star reviews for this book. It was painful to read. I stopped counting the MANY spelling, grammatical and wrong words ("fats" for "fast"). The sentence structure was awkward and the entire book read like it was written by a ten year old. I would have given it a better rating if the recipes were great, but I can find most of these in some version on Pinterest. Sorry, but I did something I have never done - returned an ebook!

From the Back Cover

One of Sports Illustrated’s top 100 sports books of all time  In 1950, when no mountain taller than 8,000 meters had ever been climbed, Maurice Herzog led an expedition of French climbers to the summit of an 8,075-meter (26,493-foot) Himalayan peak called Annapurna. The route up Annapurna had never been charted, and Herzog and his team had to locate the mountain using crude maps, pick out a possible line of ascent, and go for the summit. Annapurna is the unforgettable account of this heroic climb and its harrowing aftermath, including a nightmare descent while suffering from frostbite and snow blindness. Herzog’s masterful narrative is one of the great mountain-adventure stories of all time.  This new edition—which commemorates the sixtieth anniversary of the Annapurna ascent on June 3, 1950—features a new foreword by Conrad Anker.

November 1, 2016Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseVery well written, lots of adventure. I have had to keep in mind that it was written more than 50 years ago, because some of the cultural aspects are disturbing to someone from 2016--the native people are definitely 2nd class and taken advantage of, but that is the reality of history. There is nothing about interpersonal conflicts within the group, but lots of battling the elements, and rather nasty frostbite operations.

Thomas Erickson5.0 out of 5 starsEpic Adventure Frech expedition climb first 8000M peak. trouble, dangerous, frostbite amputations

March 7, 2013Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI love true adventure stories. Annapurna is a true adventure story of a French 1950 mountain climbing expedition. Two of their members are the first to reach the summit of a 8000M peak. Unheard of, many thought it could not be done. Annapurna is the epic book that influenced ED Vestures when he was a boy toward his mountain climbing greatness ( climbed all 13 8000M peaks with no supplemental oxygen...all his books 5 star see my reviews).Annapurna is 278 pages of great adventure and lots of action. No boring parts. I read it in 3 days. Here's a tidbit of the book to wet your appetite.A group of some of the greatest mountain climbers is assembled with a great doctor/surgeon Oudot, and support people for the expedition. Local loyal helpers/guides called Sherpas and Coolies to help carry the heavy loads are hired. The leaders Sahibs have as their expedition leader Maurice Herzog. Herzog is seen as brave but sensibly cautious and uses lots of scouting of different routes. A higher mountain was originally thought OK to climb but it is found too dangerous at this time. Scouting more through glaciers around impassable ridges , a hidden valley a route to Annapurna is found. Already they are experiencing bad weather and are in a race with time as Monsoon rains are coming soon. Some routes are found to be no good. Lots of dangers, crevasses, and avalanches. Five ascending camps are set up. The expedition is rapidly breaking down due to health problems.Herzog and Louise Lachenal make it to the top. All expedition members helped and team work was great. A lot of unselfish people. However Herzog loses his gloves and develops frostbite of the fingers and toes. Lachenal has frostbite of the toes and heal. Some of the others have snow blindness and injuries. The expedition physically is a mess They must hurry to a lower camp for the doctor Oudot to try to save them. Gangrene has set in. Toes and fingers must be amputated. There is a great chapter of the expedition's passage from Nepal to India and meeting the Maharajah in his palace.I won't say too much more and ruin the book for you.Anyone loving true adventure stories and human endurance against incredible obstacles will love this book. This book was the one that many great climbers got their inspiration from. 5 stars and proudly added to our family library.

Steve Hallsey5.0 out of 5 starsTerrific

October 12, 2016Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI purchased this book after summiting Mt. Rainier with Ed Viesturs. Ed told me, during our climb, this was the book that inspired him to dedicate his life to mountaineering and becoming the first American to summit all 14 of the 8,000K summits in the world without supplemental oxygen. Being a novice mountaineer myself, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I found the book to be well written and extremely thoughtful. Today, when most mountaineering books are written as "tell-all" accounts of an expedition, I found this book to be refreshing because it was more about the experience of conquering the mountain than it was about airing dirty laundry about the participants. This particular climb still amazes me, because this team of explorers summited Annapurna (an extremely difficult and demanding mountain) on their first attempt. This book is about courage, determination, perseverance and dedication. This is a must read if you are the least bit interested in mountaineering.

A. Frost5.0 out of 5 starsWhere is Annapurna??

July 10, 2016Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseA marvelous window into early Himalayan climbing. One would laugh at the primitive equipment, the false maps, and the disappearing mountains if the stakes hadn't been so high (life or death). Eventually the French team finds Annapurna, but the weather threatens to end the attempt. A thrilling account.

KYL5.0 out of 5 starsUnselfish courage

February 15, 2015Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseA classic review by a humble man, not focused on his own superlative abilities but on the unselfish tenacity of both him and his equally qualified teammates, the key word being teammates. Without fanfare he relates a most amazing story of truly dedicated, tough mountaineers. This is not for the reader that leans toward soap opera but for one that values looking into lives that displayed unadorned courage.
