I was looking for something with a humorous twist to it, sort of "the story behind the story" but this wasn't it. Bryson did, in fact, do his homework and research in gathering facts, but the book read like a boring high school science/physics text book. As I tried to get "into" this book, it became more boring as each page was turned. What could have been said in a few sentences took several pages. I don't know how others feel, but David Bodanis did what Bryson failed to do in the excellent "Electric Universe," and "E=MC2." If you're looking for the story behind the story and understanding the chain of events that got us to where we are, Bodanis would be the way to go.

A friend of mine recommended this book knowing that I like science. I'm used to reading about the sciences in single topics. This book surprised me in the amount of effort the author took to go through book after book of different sciences, both old and new, and proceeded to connect the dots into several cohesive stories about our home, planet Earth, and its residents. The biggest surprise is how little we truly know about both and just how much luck was involved that both exist in their present form. This book is an easy read and should be understandable to anyone who has a basic interest in science.Be prepared though to being overwhelmed because there is a lot of information in this book, with references to other works. This book is best read in sections allowing yourself some time to think about what you have learned; and I'm sure you are going to learn at least a few things.I highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to understand what an amazing place our planet is and life that exists on it.

I have just completed Bill Bryson’s “A Short History of Nearly Everything” for the second time. I am quite certain it will not be my last reading. I cannot think of any other single-volume book I have ever read that was as informative, entertaining, and broad in scope as this classic. Not having excelled in science, nor been much interested in it when I was younger, this gem is a massive refresher course on everything I ever learned about science, and then some.Bryson moves seamlessly from one sweeping topic to the next with great ease. Whether he is expounding upon thermodynamics, paleontology or cosmology, he helps us to grasp, to the extent that seems possible, the interrelatedness of all physical phenomona. He is particularly skillful at putting into perspective concepts of size and dimension within the universe, whether mind-bogglingly vast expanses or minuscule marvels of life’s building blocks. He not only teaches us what is known, but humbles us by emphasizing how much we do not know.Bryson also brings us biographical sketches of the greatest names in science as only an enormously talented humorist could do. Intellectual giants like Newton, Einstein, and many others, are brought to us with all their eccentricities. So many brilliant individuals were quite odd, which makes them much more human and accessible to the Bryson’s reader.There is also a moral underpinning to Bryson’s book which becomes most evident in the final chapter. Our species has, in essence, become the extinction event for so many others with which we have shared the planet. Beginning with the unsuspecting and gentle dodo bird, Bryson outlines how we have systematically brought about the termination of thousands of creatures, intentionally or through ignorance. This sobering reality makes one a bit more respectful of current efforts to save endangered species.No species, and indeed no human being, is anything other than a miracle of chance, a reality in which Bryson rejoices from his opening chapter. He congratulates each of us for surviving the cut and coming into existence against all odds. His book is humbling and thought-provoking, leaving one with a sense of awe at the grandeur of, well, nearly everything.

I read the hardcover version first, all the while wishing there were pictures, diagrams, maps, etc. I then heard of this illustrated version and ordered it right away. This adds so much to the text. Written in Bryson's easy, slightly ironic style, this book tackles subjects that are often difficult to fully grasp. Great fun and much improved with pictures!

Well written and entertaining this is not a textbook, rather Bryson attempts to create a story. The story of Earth and the people who made the critical advancements. The story of Marie Curie, Einstein, Darwin. This is a book that would make Carl Sagan proud.The book is organized into 6 parts: Lost in the Cosmos; the Size of the Earth; A New Age Dawns; Dangerous Planet; Life Itself; and The Road to Us.The first part: Lost in the Cosmos is about the big bang and the elemental beginnings of the Universe. Part 2 The size of the Earth discusses the early attempts to determine the size of the Earth in the 17th century. Part 3 A New Age Dawns is about is about Einstein’s universe and the atom and plate tectonics. Part 4 Dangerous Planet is about the interior of the planet and what lies below the surface. Chapter 5 Life Itself is the largest section comprising 161 pages. It covers the rise of life beginning after the formation of the Earth up through the Cambrian explosion. The chapter also discusses Darwin’s work on Evolution. The final chapter The Road to Us is about the rise of humans.My only issue with the book is that is a bit dated. The history sections are great, but the discussion on current events and science are out of date. This book needs an update.

This thing has been revised and re-thought.Now - let me give a review worthy of both - and if you find an old copy but don't have the new one - worth getting it.This is a book for writers and creative people. Lots of "How to write..." out there but...Well...Let's take a step back.Way, Waaaayyyy back there was this wonderful essay by Poul Anderson - "On Thud and Blunder" complaining about a lot of hack work being irresponsibly published during a brief but legendary "Sword and Sorcery" boom. Now, the article is side-splittingly funny and oh, so true. I loved it, though I obviously read it much later than originally published - quick google search you'll find it online.But - I should hate it. Coz I was interested in writing stories since day one. And I did look up educational material on it. Now, you want to do electronics you can find books on how to solder, use meters, how to read resistor codes, etc. Writing - well it was like EVERY single book on it was just Mr. Anderson's essay ballooned to a book to take your $ with maybe stuff added how to suck up to the Editor, etc.Mr. Anderson did have a good point - even in a fantastic otherworld things need to 'work' - that's the essence. Certainly mediocre writing will doom even faster to obscurity uncreative bland hack-work.BUT - writing is about "The Story".In the hands of a good writer ol Gnorts the Barbarian can fight off 500 of the King's pike-men with a 50lb Wet NOODLE and there will be comics, movies, video games made of him in later decades. It's good to keep the magic, cities, names, technology, events consistant - yes - but they are paints, pencils...What ARE you drawing? What are you painting? What do you say with your painting? How does it strike or lure the reader? Are there layers of meaning...?For instance - art - you can paint a pretty picture, but what does it say. Anyone can spatter paint, but there's a big difference between Van Gogh and paint spattered on the canvas. And then look at stuff like "Isle of the Dead"... A lot more than just the image painted implied.Well - this is the book for people who want to write stories, but know the basics but want to transcend them. It's hard to put this book into a small essay here - but its about the only book I've found that wasn't the "Mind your Elves and Orcs" stuff. I don't necessarily think it'll get you published - not in the current market of tons of mediocre, PC junk and everyone wanting to be the next King, Rowling, Tolkien, Martin - and hacking out stuff imitative of them... But if you want to write YOUR stories - and it'd be nice if you made money doing it - but you are putting out your stories and want to tell them in all sorts of good ways, to discover angles you didn't think of - but after all the work and experimentation improve yourself - well I don't think there's a better book out there. Nothing is certain in life but if any book helps you unleash the talent in you so your stories are remembered after all the "i wanna be the..." are forgotten and the Martins and Rowlings fade to "Penny Dreadful" status, G-d willing.I've now bought this book THRICE.Once - got stolen...won't go into it.Again - loved it - my precious - risked getting in trouble at work to read it.And - this new one - "Shut up and take my money!" - pre-ordered it - am glad I did!

I was very excited about this book based on other reviews. I also enjoyed some of VanderMeer's work and was looking for insight into writing alternative history fiction, but I found this to be the least helpful writing book I have read.The entire book is basically structured like this: "One thing that is very important is [beats/emotion/exposition/dialogue/pacing/etc.]. You can do this well by using method A or using method B, which is the exact opposite of A. Hugo-award-winning author X excelled at using the former approach brilliantly in Book 1, and author Y's book, Book 2, has many examples of effectively using method B." Repeat, repeat, repeat. I appreciate VanderMeer highlighting certain issues that a writer needs to be aware of, (i.e. beats/emotion/exposition/dialogue/pacing) and that there is no single way to approach them--and in fact directly opposing approaches may be effective depending on what the author is trying to accomplish. BUT he almost never provides actual examples of authors effectively executing the approaches he mentions. He just names the book and the author. I have not read the majority of the books that he references, and even the books that I remembered reading, I did not recall the very specific thing that he was citing the book as an example of, so it provided no insight for me whatsoever.This was particularly a let-down as I had just read the Emotional Craft of Fiction, and that author was very good at presenting excerpts of the books that he referred to in order to illustrate the technique or process he was trying to explain. I did not always agree that the author of the cited books effectively evoked the specific emotion or response that the Emotion Craft author cited them for, but that was useful too, because every reader will not respond the same to the written word, and it was useful to see how others can respond to the same set of passages. This book, unfortunately did not do any of that, so it was almost totally without value to me because vague allusions to different techniques without any exemplars is not very useful.The only valuable things in this book--to me--were the few times he very explicitly used examples from his own writing process to illustrate how different passages and approaches accomplish different goals. It is these type of concrete examples that I find actually useful. Some of the excerpts from other authors were also very useful--particularly those that relied on specifics from their own works or minds, and didn't speak generally about the process of writing (be creative! don't be discouraged!). I also really appreciated the time and energy and creativity put into the graphics, although they too were not very useful. That is the only source of the two stars, and I really don't understand how others got so much value out of this book.

I am more than satisfied with my purchase. I own both versions, kindle, and paperback. This is by far the best creative writing textbook I have read and learned from. The chapter on characterization is worth the price. You can't rely on plot all the time. It will only get you so far. I am dyslexic, which is why I appreciate that they released a Kindle version of the book. It has quotes in many cases from prominent authors. Don't wait too long to get this or you will regret passing up on a good book. It's not philosophical. I have heard these comments to describe the book (give the book a chance, yes I am around 30 years old which makes it a somewhat dense read). To understand the book focus on the important details you want to improve on. In my case it was characterization. I even liked the challenge exercise which forces in one case to write from both characters point of view, which is in a sense a type of conflict. But conflict comes from characterization. I recommend reading it slowly or using a speech engine for when you get tired of reading. I haven't finished it yet, but just because I gained insights. Just before character arcs, there are a set of questions that help you flesh out your character or plot. A plot can be developed with some strategies, some examples include the symbolic life of objects, kinds of characterization. Even though he doesn't advocate it outright, biographical tidbits of your characters life. Action versus thought, consistency versus inconsistency, transfer of energy. I have a 400 downloaded collection of Kindle books. Do yourself a favor. Since this is the best book I have personally read, give it a chance before giving your money away to many preying booksellers and authors, who don't know enough to explain the craft.

About the Author

Raffaele D'Amato is an experienced Osprey author having written more than 20 titles. He was a second-level manager in charge of implementing quality systems in five manufacturing areas. He is a certified course developer and has developed courses including Total Quality Management, Continuous Flow Manufacturing, Customer-Driven Quality, Statistical Design and Analysis of Experiments, Team Building, Six Sigma, Conflict Resolution, and Communication Skills. Awesome Book!

great reference

I bought this book hoping to use it as a reference for my upcoming Six Sigma Black Belt exam. The index is ridiculously poor for a book with almost 600 pages. For example, if you look for Control Chart, it's not in the index. OK, how about Statistical Process Control? Nope. Maybe SPC you say? Nada. How on earth you write 600 pages of Six Sigma material, but don't put these terms in the index, makes no sense at all. I'm returning this one!

Great book

This is an outstanding book and a significant addition to the literature in the science of "quality." I have spent the past 35 years managing software and hardware teams in the computer industry and wish such a book had been available many years ago. The Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Handbook is much more than a guide to eliminating defects, improving quality, increasing speed, and eliminating cost. It is a concise, yet complete, reference guide to all aspects of Lean Six Sigma. Chapter by chapter it builds a foundation that the reader can absorb a piece at a time. It bridges theory with practical application and provides an inordinate amount of detail in describing and defining the enormous, and sometimes daunting, number of concepts, tools, and processes. A glance thru the table of context can be a bit intimidating but actually acts as a reference guide to those who have some familiarity with Six Sigma and Lean but wish to go deeper or brush up on some detail or nuance during an actual project or simply gaining more knowledge about the subject. I personally enjoyed the many references and linkages to the heritage of the field of quality that I first became familiar with so many years ago...such as TQM and the Toyota Production System. The author had me at the first sentence. I spent the rest of the book trying to figure it out. Turns out I was wrong. This is a fiction book, based on the recounting of the author's memories of life with her younger sister. I did not realize it was the author until I saw Bette used as the name of the narrator. What a gripping, page turning book! Having a sister, I completely understood the emotions the author shared with the reader. Donna, the younger sister, was the carefree sister. Bette, the oldest sister, was the careful one. Geri, the youngest sister, moves in and out of this book. Their mother, Mama, is another person who is present throughout the entire book. I have a daughter and so can understand some of Mama's thoughts and actions.We have all made decisions that were not in our best interest at one point or another in our lives. Donna, though, seems to have a knack for making those more often than not. She falls in love with Charlie, marries him, has a son, divorces Charlie. She remarries Charlie, has a daughter, divorces Charlie. However, some of her best decisions are showcased in her relationship with her daughter Debi. Debi is an incredible tribute to Donna.Donna shows strength when the reader may not be expecting it. She makes a decision that seems to be counterproductive but turns out to be the best for her situation. Looking at things through another's eyes instead of always using our own eyes sometimes leads to miscommunication and misunderstanding. That was almost the case for the two older sisters.What wonderful memories the author must have and how fortunate I am that I read her book detailing many of them.

You are introduced to sisters growing up in a simpler time. Bette is the oldest and the quiet one. Donna is the daring one and has an "I want to have it all attitude". Donna is fearless and emotionally strong. Bette is not very daring and is timid. She admires Donna's fearlessness and wishes she could be more like her.Within the covers of this delightful story is the growing up of these 2 girls and how their lives turn out. When Donna falls ill and has to have a procedure that leaves her without a voice, you discover how truly determined and strong this woman is. Bette calls and visits her sister frequently. Donna continues to live independently not wanting too much help. One day, Bette decides that she just has to find a Bichon for her sister. She wants to give her sister a companion to replace the cat that had run away from home. While Bette and Dick were driving to Donna's, Bette worried that her sister would not accept the gift. It all turned out so well. The gift of the little Bichon just made Donna's day and she instantly fell in love with the little guy.Donna does not seem to improve over the next 2 years. The day Bette catches her smoking upsets her so much. Bette has convinced herself that her sister will get better with time. This brought back so many memories for me. My father was a heavy smoker and also had emphysema, he passed away at 58 just before my sixteenth birthday. It was said to see such a lively and vibrant person deteriorate into the shell of the man he was by the time he passed. I understand completely what Bette was feeling and the denial she lived with.This is such a wonderful story that is both sad and happy, but a touching tribute for a loved one lost too soon.

I have never read a book by Bette Lee Crosby that I didn't love. And as usual, this one did not disappoint. In fact, with this being the story of her life and relationship with her sister made it touch me even more. I'm sure it was hard to write at times. But she tells it so well.There are heart breaking as well as heart warming moments in this book. All are told in the down to earth way that the author writes. You will come to feel as if you are her best friend or part of the family. You'll be happy with her and you'll cry with her. If you have a sister, this story will tug at your heart strings.Bette, as the eldest sister, grew up feeling responsible for the care of her younger sisters, especially her middle one. This is difficult even as a parent if a child is strong willed as her sister was. You will get so caught up in this story that you won't want to put it down.I highly recommend this book as well as any books by Bette Lee Crosby! She writes books that touch your heart.
