For no apparent reason I recently decided to re-read Fahrenheit 451 after many decades. The book literally fell apart as I was reading it, causing me to buy a new copy and this fine volume of his short stories, 100 in all from 1943 to 1980 (judging by the copyright dates). There's always a danger that stories like this show their age and certainly he reflects many of the concerns of the time, particularly the fear of nuclear war and the implications of space travel. Although some of the ideas about the habitability of Mars and other planets are clearly wrong, yet they really don't detract much from the stories as they are more about the human condition than scientific accuracy.I was expecting science fiction or fantasy stories and there are plenty of those usually with an intriguing twist ; one can see the influence on the Twilight Zone. However, there is much more than that, with tales of rural America, Ireland and even of a Cuban parrot to which Hemingway has dictated his final work. There are stories of coming of age, of marriage and of dying, all well told. Perhaps the prose can get a little flowery at times but as each story is relatively short it really is not any major issue.This Everyman edition is a really well made and produced book, nearly 1100 pages in total, even including a permanent book mark. My only gripe is that the date each story is written is not included. Perhaps this was for a specific reason but I think being able to place the work in time would have helped in some cases. With this reservation I would definitely recommend this collection.

Throughout the last 20 years I would come across something that would remind me of a story I'd read in high school ... that I could have sworn was Bradbury but I just could not figure it out... (my Sci-Fi english teacher had a mad crush on Bradbury :) so we read a lot of short stories). I finally typed some of the story I could remember into the magical google machine and found it!!! Then the hunt was on to which compilation book would be the best option, since you can't go wrong with more Bradbury, so might as well get one with a lot of other works.The story I couldn't remember the name of was The Veldt. It had elements that I kept triggering on when rereading The Martian Chronicles. SO GLAD I finally found it. Read that story as soon as I got this. Then A Sound of Thunder to further my travels down memory lane. Now I've started from the beginning to read all the stories bit by bit.There is just something about his writing style that works for me, though I cannot articulate why. I'm sure it has to do somewhat with reading it when I was young and its made an impression on me, but I like his style and his way of working in real life themes in fantastical (especially in his writing times) and scarily predictive stories.Now that I think about it, I think my aversion to 'smart' houses stems from his stories lol. Might save my life in the future. :)About the book itself - good binding, big enough that they have two different ribbons to keep your place. Definitely recommend.

Embracing all cultures and ranging from prehistoric times to the present, this book covers the broadest range of subjects implied by the title, including city planning, landscape architecture, conservation, earthworks, and other uses of land in contemporary art. While this history is international in scope, it does narrow its primary focus to the United States when it reaches the late 20th century. The photographs and especially the plans are excellent and numerous. Single pages or double-page spreads devoted to specific topics add an encyclopedic element while allowing Rogers to provide even more information, illustrations, and plans without interrupting the flow of her very readable text. Accessible to lay readers but of interest to scholars, this book could serve as the text for a comprehensive course on the history of landscape design. Highly recommended. This is an incredible book! It is truly a cultural and architectural history – not just a history of landscape design. You can turn to any page and learn so much, even about things you may already know something about. The author is a master at bringing to bear culture, philosophy, religion, art, literature, and technology to each topic. It is dense, but if it weren't, this book would be huge. I will be reading this book for months and years and I'm so happy to have found it and recommend it to anyone, whether or not you are interested in landscape design.

WOW what a book. Incredibly interesting subject matter. It is however a very difficult books to read. The author is incredibly intelligent and knowledgable in this field, and on more than one occasion makes you take out your old grammar cards and confirm that yes... somehow the past 12 lines on this page have all been one coherent literarily sound sentence. Incredible book, but denser than the King James... and thicker! if you are reading this for a class awesome its a great read.... DO NOT WAIT till 2 days before the test, this is a book you can NOT cram read. little bit each day.

Bought for text book.

This was recommended by one of my students, and it is terrific. It gives insights into why certain landscape and garden designs came to be, not simply how they are done. I'll refer to some of the author's specific points in my next course.

I got this book for a Landscape Architecture History class and didn't use it much. From what my teacher told me and the few chapters I did read (they're pretty long chapters, by the way) the author tends to go on and on, verging on losing the readers attention at times. What's great about this book though is that you can pick it up and read about a particular site (with great photos to accompany the text) for 10 or 15 minutes, which makes it a great coffee table book.

This is a great book. It is very readable, and even if you are not particularly interested in landscape design/architectural history, Elizabeth Barlow Rogers will inspire you. This book follows landscape and cultural architecture through history and makes me wonder why all schools - from elementary on up - don't attack history lessons from such a practical and fascinating point of view.Also, compared with other landscape Arch books this is much less narrow and really weaves in many many threads of cultural and historical interest.

I came across THE BOOK while looking for a new text for my History of Publishing course, and after reading it adopted it and revamped the course. Nicole Howard has done an excellent done of telling the story of the book—its origins, economics, labor history and technological development. We learn about papyrus and parchment and paper; the invention of movable type, including the lawsuits between Gutenberg and his business partners (he lost) and the role of the alphabet in printing; the development of books sizes, topics, and print runs; paratext and illustration; book banning and copyright; industrialization and computerization; and the reaction of the labor force to change. As a reader, I wish the book had been longer, but as a teacher it’s just right. Well organized, clearly explained and replete with illustrations, yet with plenty of room for students to find topics for further research.

The book wove together information I had from other sources such as the role of the Irish scribes. I am an avid reader and enjoyed the explaination of the printing process and the rise of the paperback novel. I have recommended this book to archivists and antiquarian scholars.

A good introduction to the subject; one reviewer called it "serviceable" and I would agree. It tells you all you need to know in clear prose -- great for an undergraduate, perhaps too linear for graduate students.

Good historical record of book development. Was relatively dry, and I could have used more illustrations especially about fonts.

I purchsed this book for a class I was taking. I found the book to be delightfully informative without being boring or overly flowery. If you are interested in the history of the book, pick this up. You will not be disappointed.

Could not get into it

The book is very boring although it provides much publishing history. This was a required book for a publishing class but I did not get passed the first chapter.

This is a useful book if you are looking for a standard and readable history of the book. It seemed to me authoritative, but its citations are a bit skimpy. Sometimes the author tells us where she's getting her information, and at other times she doesn't. The bibliography is OK.Howard doesn't advance an argument or any new thesis about the history of the book. Rather, this is a conventional history of a technology, based on evolution, progress, development. I wish she had had more to say about what newer technological changes actually pose to the relevance of the book itself. She just assumes that the book will always be important, but I think this is a presumption that might require some more reflection.

The Clan Legacy Complete Series Box Setby J. S. StrikerThis is a magnificent box set to read. There is Dragons, Werewolves, Vampires, Werebears, Witches and Shifters of all kinds. What I enjoyed about J.S. Striker is she has a terrific sense of humor and her creative Talent shines with each story you read in the series. There is suspense, drama, sexual tension with romance, you can allow your belief in romance and let the story take you to their world. The characters are great along with the plot. I think you will enjoy the good-natured ribbing between the characters in each story which will make you smile plus the sexy times is blazing hot. I must admit that it was hard to stop reading and put my kindle down because each story has so many awesome characters. Each heroine nature of The Clan Legacy is wonderfully done. Each hero brings a special talent and personality to each story and their banter is sometimes hilarious. These books will give the readers an around the world tour as each couple travels on their adventure. The Clan Legacy is in the genre of Paranormal romance. It’s an Box set of amazing stories, full of twists, adventures and betrayal. The world building is excellent, with all kinds of shifters, witches and Vampires. I can say I highly recommend this Box set you will enjoy most if not all. It’s a Magnificent READ!

Hang in there Dorothy, because this is an action packed boxed set that will keep you on your toes.The paranormal world is in flux with evil leaders of various factions pushing for dominance. Some are allied, some work on their own, all need to be defeated and usually at great cost.This is a set that you will not be able to put down. J. S. Striker is a fabulous writer and I highly recommend this series.I'm a huge fan and so I offered to ARC for SOME of these books and PURCHASED the ones that were already released.

This complete series includes eleven books, beginning with the dragon clan. Book one, Sebastian, features Robbie Sebastian, the acting head of the dragon clan, and Sophia Gray, a witch working for the vampires. Each of the following books brings the different clans into focus, featuring vampires, witches, and shifters, with a few demons thrown in. The books are entertaining, I liked some more than others, and only one didn't quite meet my expectations. The final book was one of my favorites, however, and ended the series on a high note. I will be reading more by this author.

This is an outstanding set of eleven books full of suspense, action, adventure, and hot and steamy love with interesting story lines that keep you reading from one book to the next. I had already purchased and read quite a few of the set when they first came out, but I went back and re-read the set from the beginning. This series definitely has it all. Excitement, love, adventure! True love never has a quick save course but the final destination will be well worth it! Each shifter comes up across someone who makes their life not so easy. A little trouble here, a bit of maybe humour there and viola! Total chaos!!Love the author's work and stories! Fantastic stories and reads!!

Characters are appealing stories grab you and suck you in. You can’t put it down. Didn’t want to stop reading but sleep is a necessity if you want to function properly. Stories were that good that I actually considered reading straight through without stopping. Definitely recommend.

This was an amazing box set. The Clan Legacy was a great series w/shifters, vampires and witches. Enjoyed all the stories. Received an ARC and I’m leaving a voluntary review.

When it comes to Japan's larger cities, I've always opted for Tokyo over Osaka...but I have to say, I kind of fell in love with Osaka and it's probably because of some of the places I experienced in this guide. I really only had a few days and mostly hit up the Shopping suggestions, but this guide took me to some fantastic off-the-beaten path places. Since the streets are kind of hard to navigate in Osaka, I really had to rely on the abstract map in the back to find some of these places, but once I got there I was happy. I really enjoyed the old Mitsubishi offices turned boutiques...mysterious, eerie, and Margiela! They also had a really neat architectural bookstore in there that had Japanese copies of Le Corbusier's Modular. I'm kickin' myself for not buying those. I will definitely recommend Osaka over Tokyo to any friends travelling abroad....it's cheaper, has good shopping, and is a hop-skip away from Kyoto!

I am very impressed with Phaidon City Guides ,the images are simply great,And Love the size of the book.It is NOT a travel guide but rather a pic book,with very unique and interesting photos and small bios of locations and/or places to see and go,Planning to keep adding some more to my collection.

I recently purchased two books from this series for a trip to Oslo and Stockholm. I did not find them useful at all and got alot more information from the City websites as well as the Tourist Information booths when I arrived in each city. Even the maps included in the books were not helpful as they were too small. I was not familiar with this series when I purchased the books and could not open them to view them on the Amazon site - maybe that should have deterred me from purchasing them. I would not recommend these at all.

Absolutely useless. Laughable in the way it points you to the ugliest sights in Riga, ignoring the myriad beautiful ones.

Tiny book with pretty graphic design but not so much content. After living in Osaka for 4 months, I found myself visiting ZERO places mentioned in this book.

I ordered this (and unfortunately a few other cities as well) thinking they would be little fit in your pocket type things that would contain helpful information on what to see in each city. What they are is just a heap of stupid artisty type photographs of the inside of hotel rooms, random people's flats, cafes, restaurants, shops, and other things you aren't going to be interested in seeing. There's even a page of a photograph of someone's CD and action figure collection in this Oslo one. Doesn't even have the outsides of any things you would actually go and look at and maybe photograph yourself when walking around Oslo. Nor an even half decent map, on the back cover there is a colour map of Oslo yet most of the street names are missing. So useless to find your hostel or whatever you're looking for. No information on how to get to the airports, especially the far away ones that Ryanair and the budget airlines use. A complete waste of money!
