About the Author

Eugene Bardach has been teaching graduate-level policy analysis workshop classes since 1973 at the Goldman School of Public Policy, University of California, Berkeley, in which time he has coached some 500 projects. He is a broadly based political scientist with wide-ranging teaching and research interests. His focus is primarily on policy implementation and public management, and most recently on problems of facilitating better interorganizational collaboration in service delivery (e.g., in human services, environmental enforcement, fire prevention, and habitat preservation). He also maintains an interest in problems of homeland defense, regulatory program design and execution, particularly in areas of health, safety, consumer protection, and equal opportunity. Bardach has developed novel teaching methods and materials at Berkeley, has directed and taught in residentially based training programs for higher-level public managers, and has worked for the Office of Policy Analysis at the US Department of Interior. He is the recipient of the 1998 Donald T. Campbell Award of the Policy Studies Organization for creative contribution to the methodology of policy analysis, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. This book is based on his experience teaching students the principles of policy analysis and then helping them to execute their project work.

This is also a very good, easy to read and easy to apply book. I did my practicum in the U.N and developed couple of policy documents and I found this book very helpful in writing the policy document. It gave me a step by step guide from collecting evidences, reviewing them and organizing my review and to do table talk / focus group discussions and consensus building meetings on policy recommendations. I did write the policy document and it was approved. I am happy that I have this book and I will keep it with me for my future endeavors in my public health career.

The book will be very useful for students who have never studied public policy and who have never never written a public policy proposal. The book is clearly written and concise. It contains a sample proposal and also covers the important topic of not-for-profit organizations. As the title indicates, the book has a focus on the practical, which is comforting to students who may feel lost in the complex world of policy analysis and development.

The book was required for Public Policy 304W: Public Policy Analysis, at Pennsylvania State University. Bardach develops his eight step path to public policy analysis. He further details the need to sell analysis by building consensus and support. Some concepts may be strange to the aspiring analyst in that Bardach sees a role for the analyst as not simply a disinterested observer performing a passionless critique, but rather as an advocate for the policy and proposals the analyst advances.

I used this text for a policy development class and it provides excellent advice. How to construct a concise and convincing document that gets to the point is not as easy as it sounds. The assignment was to write a policy recommendation on a complex issue on two pages or less. This book helped me get an "A" for the course. Highly Recommended

I honestly don't know where else one would five such a handy and complete translated libretto of such a massive operatic corpus. Of course, you can enjoy the opera without a libretto, especially now with the hand above stage subtitles, but I have found a little study with this text has helped me enormously in connecting word to music. Definitely recommend for anyone.

I was very pleasantly surprised to discover that this sturdy paperback reprint edition (2010; printed in Slovenia) has a sewn binding. I heartily commend the publisher for eschewing the subtracted value of a "Perfect" or otherwise non-sewn binding. (The annoying crumbly gummy labels that US-ified the UK-specific info on the back cover came off tidily with a couple of sparing cotton swab applications of lighter fluid.)In his introductory note on the text and his translation, Stewart Spencer writes: "Whether or not there is any truth in the anecdote that Wieland Wagner used to insist that his singers translate the text of the Ring into German before beginning work on the stage production, the story has a certain poetic truth to it." In addition to being a delight in itself, Spencer's translation is helping me immensely in deepening my understanding of Wagner's German.

There is not great deal that can be said about this book. It is by far the best translation of the Ring librettos I have seen, and I have many. You get both the English and German poems. You cannot go wrong with this translation if you of are the privileged human beings who has entered the magic kingdom of Wagner.

**Update: I recently contacted the publishers, who wrote they are scheduling a late summer 2010 reprint.**I teach the Ring Cycle, and I recommend the Spencer/Millington English translation over all others, including the Porter. As an English teacher, I am primarily concerned in a translation's literary value, and I confidently aver this translation as the best in English (I also have a background in German language and literature study). In his poetry, Wagner proves himself a literary genius. Like other masters of language, he deftly balances storytelling, emotion, and philosophy. There are also musicological benefits to this publication, such as notations for motifs where they occur in the text.Wagner draws from the major medieval versions of the legend, including the Saga of the Volsungs, the Prose Edda, and the Nibelungenlied. Studying these works is crucial to a literary appreciation of the libretti, much as appreciation of Plutarch biographies informs the reading of Shakespeare's plays of antiquity.Wagner's ambitious work was composed under the nationalistic fervor of 19th Century Germany. He believed "The Nibelungenlied" to be for Germany what "The Iliad" is for Greece or "The Aeneid" is for Rome. Wagner populates his German forests and rivers with mythological gods and faeries, and his human heroes are imbued with heroic courage and strength reminiscent of Achilles and Beowulf.I highly recommend this translation. There are seldom times a book will inspire aesthetic chills, and it happened several times when reading these libretti. And if you are interested in contextualizing the Siegfried literary tradition, your first stops should be the Nibelungenlied, the Saga of the Volsungs, and the Prose Edda. See also Wagner's libretto for "Tristan and Isolde," another brilliantly written libretto based on a medieval German text, Gottfried von Straussberg's Tristan.

This is great not only for the German text, which is handy for those many moments when you can't make out what words are being sung, but then of course (to native English speakers) also for the English translation to clarify meaning.

This book is great for Wagner scholars or people interested in the Ring Cycle. It's an in-depth look at the creation, process, dramatic works themselves (not "operas" but "dramas"), and all the things that have made the Ring Cycle one of the most celebrated pieces of music history.

i bought this because I am a theatre director and am getting ready to direct the farce DAS BBQ which is VERY loosely based on Wagner's Ring Cycle. This book was a good review to give me some background.

Essays were disappointing, but leitmotif list is useful and translation is excellent.

Totally fascinating, and I am not a sports freak at all. In fact, the water creeps me out. But Skolnick is very convincing when he describes the thrill of the sport. I was also fascinated by Nick Mevoli--very interesting to read about the Philly squat scene and Occupy from this unlikely angle. And great peripheral people, all very well developed, especially considering how many!The one drawback, which is probably a plus for people who are actually sporty and interested in the mechanics of freediving competition, is that the descriptions of the competitions later in the book start to blur together. But Skolnick does have a great sense of pace and drama.

Other than knowing someone who recently started freediving, I knew absolutely nothing about the sport. The reviews encouraged me to try the book and I am thrilled that I did. The writing is excellent, the information enlightening, and the story kept me hooked to the end. No need to even be a swimmer! An excellent read.

Adam Skolnick takes us into the mysterious, little-known world of free diving and it's as compelling as travel to a unknown foreign land. The reader is taken down into the boundless blue to understand its wonder and its pull. It's a fast, good read. Above all, Skolnick writes with compassion and understanding for those driven to push the limits of the sport, even while its costs are found too great.

Very well written book on a fascinating sport and a free spirit's journey and calling. I am a freediver as well and have been diving with a number of the people noted in this book. Based on my experiences, the author was pretty spot on with his portrayals.

This was an amazing book. Pretty easy read, but the author clearly did his research. I loved learning about free diving and the athletes: I want to catch a plane to Florida and go lobster diving. Karen Armstrong has written an insightful summary of the historical development of the God concept from earliest time to the present. The best review of the major contributions of her case study can be found in the book’s prologue and epilogue. Her overview of the ways in which human interpretations of the transcendental “other” have appeared in history is invaluable in sorting out the objects of religious devotion (or the denials thereof) which have challenged human understanding. To convey the scope and artistry of her analyses, I have selected ideas from her book which particularly appealed to me. She presents her case in two parts; the first is The Unknown God (30,000 BCE to 1500 CE) during which ultimate reality was not a personalized God, but a profound mystery which could never be plumbed (mythos beyond logos). Reality that transcends language must be expressed symbolically, which was variously developed: in Hebrew monotheism, in Greek philosophy, in rabbinical Judaism, in early Christianity, in Eastern orthodoxy and in Islamic revelation. Central to many of these developments were the ideas that accessibility to God involved one or more of: “kenosis” (emptying oneself of selfishness), “pistis” (commitment to engagement), “ekstasis” (stepping out of habitual thought patterns), all of which required long, hard practice or ritual devotion. Attempts to prove God’s existence through logic were proposed, but those who claimed an experience of God seemed to accept the “apophatic assumption” which was that reason was incapable of encompassing what God was. The second part of the book (1500 CE to the present) covers the period in which religion and science were seen progressively to contradict each other. As the scientific method developed, observational and experimental “truths” contradicted metaphorical “truths” in scripture, which were mistakenly taken literally and suppressed for being at odds with doctrine. The philosophical enlightenment of the 18th century attempted to use logic and reason to explain transcendent experience, and this gave rise to deism and atheism but also to literal fundamentalism as a reaction to any attempt to question the veracity of scripture. But secular ideologies, such as the logical positivist’s limitation of meaningful inquiry to objective sense data, are as deadly as religious bigotry, and both represent inherently destructive idolatries. Armstrong observes that “every single fundamentalist movement, scientific as well as religious, is rooted in profound fear and is fiercely reductionistic”. Just as the monkey trial and the use of suicide bombings illustrate the weaknesses of religious fundamentalism, the holocaust as well as Hiroshima and Nagasaki illustrate the danger of science, unfettered by compassion, as a tool of militarism. If we can no longer look to an all-powerful, oriental-despot God who, if properly appeased by devotion and praise, may bless us with favors, what kind of god does this case study suggest? An answer postulated by recent German theologians seems to hark back to "that profound mystery which could never be plumbed" – a.k.a. the ground of all being. Gould has suggested that God belongs to a religious magisterium, concerned with values which is separated from a scientific magisterium which deals only with empirical sense data. Science itself is an act of faith whereas religion requires response rather than belief. In this reviewer’s opinion, Armstrong stops short of summarizing her case, perhaps because she has chosen not to include the insights that have come from analyses of those resuscitated from death or near death. There is growing evidence that consciousness, non-localized to the bodies of individuals in these and other circumstances, can expand to realms similar to, if not identical with, those experienced in mystical traditions, in order to sense that overwhelming oneness and love which is the hallmark of the perennial God experience.

I have been a big fan of Karen Armstrong since I heard her speak some years ago at a conference. Her wit and humility are as powerful as her scholarship and big picture perspective on the history of religion. Her examination as to the history of God and what that simple three letter word might mean as metaphor rather than simply literal meaning is powerful. One of my favorite quotes (and has been oft-quoted online) is this passage from the book "We have domesticated God's transcendence. We often learn about God at about the same time as we are learning about Santa Claus; but our ideas about Santa Claus change, mature and become more nuanced, whereas our ideas of God can remain at a rather infantile level."To me, that statement does not at all deny the story of God as written in the Koran, Hebrew and Christian Testaments. God as reality can be valid but only if we understand "God" to be mean many different ideas. Some see God as literal presence; others understand God as metaphor. They are all correct depending on our viewpoint.Karen Armstrong in the gentlest possible ways invites us (actually holds our feet to the theological fire) to consider God in radically different ways that surely will force us out of our comfort zones. Marvelous book.

Ms. Armstrong correctly points out that most of the angry noise about religion comes from fundamentalists and atheists. Clearly, the author falls into a more tolerant attitude about the various religious beliefs practiced around the world. She does not, however, give a free pass to Christian, Islam, or Jewish fundamentalism OR narrow-minded atheists such as Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Daniel Dennett, and Christopher Hitches. I've read all four of the atheists' books by the aforementioned and, despite them being highly entertaining and thought-provoking, were of the attitude that we should throw the proverbial religious-belief baby out with the bathwater. Both sides seem hellbent on destroying the other.The author takes pains to explain the evolving nature of religious practices since we converted to monotheism. Ms. Armstrong focuses primarily on Christianity but gives a very quick overview of the Muslim and Jewish history. It's important to pay close attention while reading 'The Case for God.' Skimming over the history of how religious belief was practiced and then reading the author's conclusions is a waste of time. She covers such areas as the intent of the Holy Trinity, the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, the Age of Reason, the Second Great Awakening, myth vs literalism, many of the movers-n-shakers of religious debate, and religion's complex relationship with science.For the record, I was raised Catholic but have been agnostic now for almost thirty years. Like the other half dozen other works I've read by Ms. Armstrong, she treats her subject matters with respect. She may not agree with their stances, but you won't find the author calling them rockheads or loony. Once in a great while, sarcasm makes a brief cameo, but Ms. Armstrong saves it for the fundamentalists and atheists such as Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris. Both Dawkin-wannabes and fundamentalists have a great resistance to acknowledging the "opponents" may have some merit. I have always finished one of the author's works better informed and reminded that religion is a valuable component for many people in living life.

Honestly, I feel duped by all the 5 star reviews. This book is worth about $10 if you are say, a freelance web developer interested in a feet-wet dip into responsive design. For $35 I expect a reference book and this book falls far short of that. To explain more: In the first 4 chapters, ff you cut out the random opinions by the Author, the repetitive 101 level CSS2 stuff and the screen shots, then you are quite literally left with a couple of examples on media queries. Maybe 3 pages of actual information. It does get a little better after that but there is still a ton of filler.This book is a gentle, first person written intro into some aspects of responsive design. Most of the story-time sections are plain common sense to any developer, regardless of their level of knowledge in responsive design. For a book on HTML5 there is a major lack of understanding of JavaScript from the author. When he is not recommending against it, he recommends its use in antiquated or inefficient ways, such as using in line event handlers.Another detraction from the book for me was an unforgivable error that the Author makes:He encourages the use of % over pixel. He is totally right that for fluid layout that technique works. However he devotes a half page to defending it and even argues that you should not round a 9 digit number (like 43.9919951%) to a more reasonable 4 or 5 digits. That statement shows a total lack of comprehension of basic math, browser interpretation and even screen resolution.To a screen there is no such thing as 1/2 a pixel. On a device with a 2400 pixel wide screen, the difference between 43.991 and 43.999 is not even 1 pixel. So 5 digits is more than enough. But the author insists that you type the extra 4 digits for utterly no point whatsoever.Worse, all IE browsers truncate your CSS % to only the first 2 decimal places anyway (Firefox does 3, webkit 15). So in a book devoted to giving a similar cross browser experience, he spends half a page telling you to do something that ensures you WON'T get the same results and you will be wasting your time typing on top of it.Any Author that writes a book on the subject should know what a screen and a browser can do.A quick summary of some other shortcomings of the book are below:- Only support for sites running on Apache. I have not finished working through yet and may lift my review rating. The reason I have given it a 3 is that it goes straight to flexbox and does not seem to cover grids except in passing. I was looking for a book that would teach me the prevalent way of doing responsive web design and that is grids, I wanted to understand them instead of just using a framework. This book uses flexbox not grids, and flexbox is still bleeding edge with many features vendor dependent and even the markup has vendor imprints like -moz- or -webkit-. Sorry but that is not what I signed up for.

I have been doing web sites for over a decade. I had a good knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript. I wanted to improve my skills for creating web sites that would scale well across devices and screen sizes. This book showed me by example the principals needed to accomplish my goals. The book goes step-by-step to teach each principle. I came to understand the concepts from this book so that I can apply them to any web design..

I have really enjoyed this book. I have been reading it over the past few weeks every night to unwind after work. I tend to prefer technical books over fiction, so this is my type of beach read. It's great for anyone brushing up on their skills or for those who might be wandering into the world of web design. It is written so concepts can be easily understood and practiced. I have read a few Packt books in the past and they all seem to be very good. This one will become a permanent reference on my desk.

Great book! The showed me how to create websites that are truly responsive and good for the future. I highly recommend the book.

Provides a ton of usable, executable advice using good examples and in a very readable style. I enjoyed this so much that I also bought Mr. Frain's Sass and Compass for Designers.

Awesome stuff. Really recommended for anyone ready to dive into HTML5/CSS3. The big plus (for me at least) was constant linking to W3 site, so I would not assume that something is just "because".The only downside is too much of external links and thus constant need for Internet connection so readying on a lengthy flight (airliner did not offer internet) was a bit tedious :)

Explains RWD that's easy to understand. This book will make your coding better. I would not recommend this book for beginners.
