It's a wonderful book, very nostalgic, incredible imagery of a rare glimpse into the 60s jet set. I do think it's odd... and I've paged through the book 4 or 5 times.. the amazing photograph on the book's cover, isn't in the book? Maybe not in my version, but I thought that was a bit odd. Typically it'd be included in the book. Many of the photos span 2 pages leaving the page break / binding in the middle of the image. I love the images and wish the book was large for every image to remain on a single page. But this is a minor complaint, very subjective. The photography and subjects are worth every second.

We assumed that as the fourth book in a series of compilations of Slim Aarons's photographs of his years living La Dolce Vita, the material would begin to run a little thin. It doesn't. What a treasure trove he seems to have built during his lifetime of photography. The fact that this book is solely about Italy, which was his preferred home away from home, no doubt helps. Beautiful people, beautiful locations, exquisite photography. And I'm sure I'm not the only guy who will appreciate the additional, more revealing photo of Catherine Wilkes, perhaps St. Louis' most beautiful export.Regarding another reviewer's comments: The book presents photographs "from the period", beautifully reproduced on high quality paper, just as with the prior Aarons books, leading me to believe that the negative reviewer is confusing this book with another publication.Bottom line: if you liked his other three books, as we did, you are likely to enjoy this one just as much. Same format, same size, every bit as enjoyable.

After spending three weeks touring Italy I fell in love with the architecture, food and people. I wanted something to remind me of the beauty and this book does that. These pictures were taken quite some time ago. The sad part is if you research the people in them, almost all of them are deceased.

This was a holiday gift for my Italian wife. Very beautifully assembled and a wonderful selection of images, it compels one to want to visit. An excellent addition to your coffee table book collection.

All of Mr. Aaron's books are just perfect. That is if you really do appreciate the good life or can appreciate without getting uptight over those who do. For me, this is a continuation and a perfect complement to all the other Aarons books that have preceded it.This is a very fun volume. Enjoy!

Not my favorite of all...I prefer the photos that land a little closer to home, ie. American Blue Bloods, but still Slim Aarons so it has to be good.

Slim Aarons creates the perfect gift for that special hostess in the Hamptons, Palm Beach, Naples or Nantucket. Aarons displays the beautiful lives of the beautiful people in an era when the priviledged were unapologetic for their good fortune. His books are unique and unavailable in stores. You really must make an effort to purchase them, which makes them a very special gift for the uninitiated. Aarons wrote several - if possible order all. They are beautifully bound, large cocktail table books, irresistable for the browser. I order them in multiples.

Five stars because although Janny Venema is a scholar, not a storyteller, the wealth of information in this book makes up for its slightly dry narrative style, giving the most comprehensive picture I've yet found of a settlement that was pivotal in colonial America as well as my family history. I bought the book because my 9X-great-grandfather was one of the first settlers of Beverwijck. My genealogical research has yielded substantial source material documenting various details of his life, but I wanted to develop a clearer picture of the place and time he lived in. Venema's book provides that picture of context and culture, providing an in-depth look at the people, politics, environment, and commerce that shaped this early colonial settlement. All the information in the book is drawn from original sources of record. Venema takes care to describe the lives of settlers in all social and economic strata, not just the leaders an power-brokers. She also includes a lot of appendix material such as charts identifying settlers by trade and occupation, plus property records organized by individual settler/owner, and a comprehensive index-by-name. My only disappointment was that some of the maps and drawings included are not very large and not easy to read.

I did not keep this book but took it to a highly eclectic bookseller. Not that I didn't like it but that I just needed to sell some books one month. He said, "This is arcane!!" I said, "I think it is her PhD thesis." There's my review since I am not a Dutch speaker or scholar but just someone who fell in love with the story because of Russell Shorto's account, "Island at the Center of the Earth." I'd say this is a worthy read for anyone who lives in or loves Albany, NY and wants to know its foundational history. The quick version is that the Dutch needed money to fight with Spain and beaver furs and pelts were worth a fortune and where Albany is, the Dutch erected Fort Orange and traded for beaver nearly to extinction. The "new world" was the resource after the population in Russia had been decimated by the same activity. As "Beaver Village" developed, many principles of government came into use that expressed Iroquois values as well as ideas from the Netherlands, which was forced toward democracy by its combination of water emergencies and regional independence. Those elements really became the paradigm we live with now as our ideal. Now I say this without being a perfect scholar of the matter, just a dabbler, so someone else may correct me and I won't take offense. This is what makes so compelling reading the Dutch adventures into what we now call New York State (because the British vanquished the Dutch and named it all after the Duke of York). Still, it was never a frontier suited for imperial governance and the British, we know, didn't keep it long. Janny Venema is a fine scholar and whether this work is arcane or for your coffee table maybe depends on where you live and what intrigues you personally. Without question, it is a finely detailed and thoroughly presented accounting of how things were in the middle 1600s. ps, my eclectic bookseller bought it. In Oregon.

This is the most comprehensive text available covering the early years of Albany. Includes a great deal of detail about the early residents and is essential for the family researcher. I have purchased 2 copies, one for home and one for the office as I refer to it so frequently. My compliments to the author, it is much appreciated.

It's a little hard to read through the run-on sentences and the sometimes cluttered paragraphs, but it does present a pretty well documented accounting of early life in the American colonies. The book is quite well resourced giving descendants of this area and time period a good "jumping off" point to further their research into their ancestor's lives.

As other reviewers commented, it is not written in novel/story form, but if you are looking for well-researched, accurate info & detail, this is full of interesting insights about life in Beverwijck. True, some things are repeated in several places, but I didn't find it a distraction but rather a reminder in a new context.

This is an excellent book. Extremely well researched. It tells how the present city of Albany in Upstate NY, got started. It's first Dutch inhabitants, the first settlers and all the information that has been gathered recently by translating the old documents that were lingering in the basements of NY State capitol buildings.It's fun to read what people did as professions, their early laws, the emancipation of women and even their clothes.Highly recommended for any history buff.

Janny Venema gives her readers a close and rewarding look at Dutch life in early America. Her description of Beverwijck's founding and development offers important glimpses of that village's social, economic, political, and religious life. Her research is deep, her writing clear, and her findings valuable. This is among the very best of early American town studies.

I now have a better understanding of what it was like in the early years of New Netherlands and Albany.

Actually 3.5 stars. I was on FileMaker Pro 7 Developer from 2005 to 2012; I finally upgraded to FileMaker Pro 11 Advanced, and so it was time to buy a good reference. I had been relying on the Special Edition Using FileMaker 7 by Lane, Bowers, Love, and Moyer--an excellent 5 star book--but they didn't update it for version 11, so I went with The Missing Manual. Honestly, it just isn't as good, but it's still worth buying and studying. You'll learn something new on every page; there have been far more changes in version 11 than I had previously imagined, and you will not get by on your version 7 skill set. Unfortunately there is no calculation function reference and no script step reference. A rather small subset of the functions and steps are discussed in the book. The section on "Sharing Your Database" does not discuss Windows Terminal Server. There is a list of error codes, but no recommendations as what to do. The index is fine. The screen shots are on the small side. You can probably read 20-30 pages a day and go through the book and examples in about one month. If you get stuck you can always go to fmforums.com for help by the FileMaker community.

Filemaker Pro 11 (both the book and the software) are easy to learn and use. As a beginner database designer (and I was thrown into database design via the sink or swim method), this book is as painless as it gets. I only regret I cannot read, type and think faster. It's fun!This is a highly formatted book and the formatting makes it easy to use, understand and to reuse as a reference. Stripping away the formatting for the Kindle was a desecration of all the work the editors and authors put into the book. Buy this book on paper (5 star book!). The only reason to buy the Kindle version is if you need to carry it around and the paper copy is too heavy.By the way, I borrowed the paper copy from my library. I will buy it when they stop renewing my loan.

IF you have the PDF Filemaker Pro User Guide in one hand and this in the other, you will probably be able to accomplish what you want to do. After using both simultanously, I can't tell which does what, but I know that I needed both to get anything done. I should say that I'm coming from a history of intense digging into Filemaker, so I may have a warped idea of what helps accomplish what. Constructing relational databases is not in my job description; I just got interested. This book and the PDF manuals that came with the app are sufficient.

I could do without the attempts to joke. The book overall is ok, not sure if I would purchase again. What I don't understand is why it seems to be impossible to find a TRULY excellent add on source that provides the types of examples you think you would get from a "missing manual"...this goes back to some basic stuff that I wasn't expecting to have to flip through.

I recently switched from Filemaker 8.5 to 11. A lot has happened to Fiemaker since 8.5 and so I bought this book to help me catch up on all the features of FM 11.It is very thorough, very complete and very well written. The authors actually thought ahead as they wrote the book. They knew what might be confusing and were sure to include explanations and samples where needed to eliminate any confusion.Excellent book. I would recommend it to anyone using Filemaker 11 - beginner to pro.

Like most "complete" manuals it is dense with detail in its nearly 900 pages. But that's the price I have to pay if I want to fully understand and MASTER the program. Would have been willing to pay more if it included one or more tutorials and additional templates & any other programs/scripts/help, etc., to help get me up to speed more rapidly. Might lose a star or two if I find any errors, misdirections or incomplete instructions. (just starting on reading & testing manual).

This was a Kindle book. It contents are great! The Kindle implementation is very poor. The index functionality is poor. I have gone back to an earlier paper version to find the approximate location of what I am looking for. The delivery method has such potential, but this implementation missed the mark. I expected more form the Missing Manual Series.

I bought this to show my various body workers so they could apply Tom Myers' myofascial release techniques on me. Very clear with photographs. Tom has held seminars in the area, but they can be cost prohibitive, especially for massage therapists. This isn't him, nor a video, but the next best thing. I was excited to see that he made this book when I was buying my second copy of Anatomy Trains (after giving my first to my chiropractor.). I'm not a body worker, but have used the techniques in this book to relieve my own trigger points. OH...the head fascia's connected to you foot fascia... What many doctor's couldn't explain or effectively treat is being resolved with myofascial release. This book, and Tom's efforts to research and put into print, his discoveries, have truly been an answer to my prayers

This is a fantastic book for myofascial release. It compliments my practice and I am already integrating it with my myoskeletal techniques. Normally I would highlight or underline passages in a book that I thought were worth coming back to, but if I had done that with this book I would have underlined the first 50 pages. The illustrations of the techniques and the description of the anatomy were helpful. This is also a great hands on application of Myers's "Anatomy Trains" book, which I would also highly suggest purchasing so that this book makes more sense when describing the various myofascial lines.

The missing component in massage therapy training (even at the neuromuscular level) can be found in this book. Muscles, bones and other body systems, such as lymph and circulatory are all part of most training programs. The nervous system while touched upon in basic courses, is studied in further detail in neuromuscular courses... but the one system far less understood is the fascial network. Fascia is touched upon and some techniques with specific fiber direction may be taught, but fascial assessment and understanding is grossly overlooked.This book holds the keys to successful client care that any therapist with a true desire to change their clients bodies, should have a copy of. It has made a tremendous impact on my neuromuscular practice. If you want to have that special something that separates your work from the majority of other therapists and keeps your clients coming back for more and referring new clients, this is one of the best books you could purchase.

I just recieved this book today.It is full of great practical information on FRT. I will be using this book for a long time.Its the best book ive seen on techniques that can be put into practice straight away since i got Art Riggs Deep Tissue Massage Manual. i would highly recommend both of these books to all bodyworkers. Both are packed with information and reasonably priced. After the introduction to fascial release technique there is a small section on how to develop your touch, bodyreading and then there are 6 chapters on different parts of the body.It looks really good.lots of drawings and photographs of doing different techniques.Highly recomended.#

Fascia is fascinating and this book helps you understand why. It gives an overview of fascia in the first few chapters and then goes into each section of the body (abdomen, spine, neck, etc...) and explains myofascial release techniques for each muscle group. With all that said, the book itself isn't too large or overbearing. If you don't need it for school, it's a great reference guide.

I recommend this book for the manual therapist looking to delve deeper into practice. I like the way it is written; perfect for the beginner and the expert.

This is a fascinating story, technically challenging even for most scientists. You certainly end up rooting for Shep and the whole gang. I can now peruse the scientific literature on line, waiting to see if the final analysis of the 2017 data set was definitive, and if so- what did they find?I read the e-book version, downloaded on October 9. My sole complaint is that there are no illustrations of either the principal scientists or of the many observatories featured in the saga.Has the Event Horizon Telescope assemblage ever been activated by another group, asking different questions? The concern by funding agencies for access is justifiable; what is the utility of the EHT going forward?Author Fletcher has compiled a fine scientific yarn, with just the right amount of dumbing-down for a non-astrophysicist to follow the technical arguments.

This was a book that once I started reading I couldn't put down. It isn't perfect but what is? This book is a chronological accounting of one stubborn scientist's dream of taking a radio image of the shadow of Sagittarius A* the black hole at the center of our galaxy the Milky Way.The author brings out the difficulty of doing this very well. The frustration of this undertaking is palpable through great descriptions of getting many very smart people together manning radio telescopes all over the world that had to deal with equipment problems, weather issues and the fact that they all had to start together. The book also explains the quagmire of bureaucratic hurdles that had toe overcome from both a scientific and financial standpoint.I still have questions and I guess this Is good. The author states that Einstein predicted the shadow. I would have liked a bit more depth on that since I have an idea on that but I would like to know if I am correct. Heck now I have something new to research.

I found this an enjoyable book on the quest to photograph a black hole. It is about the characters including Shep, the man with the quest. I have a basic understanding of quantum physics which helped. When the science is explained it can be challenging to a lay reader. It is not a book with winners and losers. It is a book about the journey to get there.

Very enjoyable reading about a subject that the average person has concept or reference about, e.g. the size, shape and makeup of our Galaxy. Once you "fall into" this book you appreciate how difficult and time consuming the task of photographing (?) the black hole at the center of our Galaxy is! Especially in light of the picture shown on the inside front/rear cover! Mind boggling! !!

This was published in 2018 after the initial black hole observation run in April of 2017, but before the results are made public. The Event Horizon Telescope is 7 or 8 specialized radio telescopes around the world organized to take a picture of the black hole in the center of our galaxy. It's a gripping story, years in that making, full of science and science politics. Politics because if successful, up to three people will win the Nobel physics from this. So there is lots of politics and maneuvering. The image was taken in April 2017, but it is taking a lot of time to process and correlate the image data to get a picture.Loved the Audible book!

I'm a researcher of mathematics, not physics. So I must admit my little preparation about the real facts of the physics. Particularly the author analyzes the model of black-holes, observing how the Einstein theory considers together entanglement and events horizon. All that is no very coherent with experimenta results, therefore we should define the theory of Einstein old for several aspects, but also the model of Penrose-Hawkings should be considered in other way.

As good as it gets when it comes to written history and biography: a true page turner with never a dull moment. And what a cast of characters: Lenin, Kaiser Wilhelm, Rasputin, Trotsky, Queen Victoria, Kings Edward VII & George V, plus the czar, czarina and their 5 ill-fated children. The story is told against the backdrop of WWI, the Russian Revolution and the collapse of monarchy across Europe. I started the book wanting to dislike N&A, given their ill treatment of the Russian peasants. Instead, I came away feeling genuine pity for them: They truly believed they were chosen by God to rule, and that autocracy was the only appropriate system of government for Russia. Moreover, Nicholas was too young and unprepared when he succeeded his father. Worse yet, his handling of foreign and military matters was simply disastrous: First, he destroys most of the Russian navy in his senseless war with Japanese, motivated by a desire to seize the Korean peninsula (as if Russia needed more land!). And then, his worst mistake: coming to the defense of Serbia after its citizens murdered the heir to the throne of Austria/Hungary. His defense of the undeserving Serbs ("fellow Slavs", he called them) brought Germany into the conflict, followed by the UK, France, etc. Reading this book, you understand how all of Europe carelessly stumbled into an unnecessary world war that killed millions. Of course, hindsight is always 20-20, but if only the czar had been an isolationist, avoided foreign entanglements, and begun a process of political (democratic) and land reform, he might have made it to old age -- along with his wife and children.

I have just re-read this book after what is probably a 50-year hiatus, and I'm pleased to say that it is every bit as brilliant as it was when first published; in fact, if anything it has improved with age.Massie traces the end of the Romanov dynasty, attributing its demise to the diagnosis of the heir to the throne, Alexis, with hemophilia and the resulting blind devotion of the Empress Alexandra to the "mad monk" Rasputin, whom she believed to be the only person capable of saving her son from the disease. Her rapture with Rasputin collided with her husband's absence to be with his troops in WWI, giving her effective control of the government -- which meant giving Rasputin almost as much control.The tale Massie tells is a classic Greek tragedy, imbued with a dreaded inevitability. He writes dramatically but not melodramatically, and covers fascinating details as well as the broad scope of History (with a capital H).A masterpiece in the 1960s, it remains every bit the masterpiece that it was then.

For me, points of special interest in this magnificent book were the following:1. The depth and reach of Nicholas and Alexandra's religiosity. Deeply Russian Orthodox in their faith, this dimension of their daily lives was both profound and omnipresent.2. The marriage of Nicholas and Alexandra...An extraordinarily loving (sensual, spiritual, and familial) partnership; admirable and enviable in their love for each other and for their children.3. Alexi's hemophilia...Because their parenthood was primary, and because hemophilia was then such a horrid disease, Alexi's disease may well have been - in terms of their personal and political survival - the straw that broke the camel's back.4.Rasputin....One of history's most unforgettable and unforgivable characters....A manipulator par excellence, he came, by reason of Alexi's hemophilia, to control Alexandra, who came to control Nicholas..... He may have been - we will never know - the lynchpin that brought an end to the Romanov dynasty.5. Their life, their wealth...In many ways, until 1917, and excluding the family tragedy (Alexi's hemophilia), they lived surrounded by every comfort that wealth could provide, and yet, as far as Massie could see, they never lost their human touch....6. The drama....Beginning in 1905 with the disaster of the Russo-Japanese War, and culminating in the Russian army's loss-after-loss-after-loss in WWI, this is ultimately and also a story of unfathomable social and political and human horror. Literally, millions upon millions were swept into this imbroglio.7. The end....Ultimately caught and trapped in the Soviet web, the entire family, noble and lovable to the end, was murdered in the basement of a house in Siberia.Above all, this is the story of a family, the warm, human and heart-wrenching story of a family unsuited and unprepared (who could have been prepared?) for the excruciating multiple calamities that befell them. But, beyond that, it was a tragedy that transcended them...and touched every Russian soul, and touches us still today.What a gift to all of us this magnificent book is!
