About the Author

ROBERT ZELLER is an artist who lives and works in Oyster Bay New York. Originally from New Orleans, Zeller received a BFA from the Boston Museum School and Tufts University and an MFA from the New York Academy of Art. He finished his education with atelier training from Jacob Collins at the Water Street Atelier and in-depth anatomical and structural study with the sculptor Sabin Howard. Zeller is the recipient of two Posey Fellowships and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant and has exhibited at galleries in Los Angeles, Houston, Paris, and New York. In 2017, he co curated "The New Baroque" exhibition at Booth Gallery in New York City, The exhibition was based on The Figurative Artist's Handbook, and featured 22 of the best contemporary figurative artists working today.Zeller is also the founder of the Teaching Studios of Art (teachingstudios.com) in Oyster Bay, New York, which he has run since 2009. It is an art school devoted to teaching traditional techniques to artists of all ages and levels of experience.  In addition, Zeller teaches workshops internationally. If I could give this book more stars I would. Let me state that I am not an artist, but have always been interested in how the human figure is drawn. I have several other books on figure drawing, but those didn't catch my interest nearly as much as this one. This book gives you a rich history of figurative art, then takes you forward by describing and instructing how to draw the human figure in various positions. Many beautiful pictures are included to fully impress upon the budding artist how each technical skill is accomplished. I love this book.This book is much more than an artist's text book - it is a work of art in itself. Not all the sketches, drawings and paintings are of young, beautiful people. There are those, but there are very realistic situations of elderly, pregnant, obese, etc...included. My mother would have loved this book as she was a good artist in her own right. I wish this book had come into existence much sooner, but I'm glad it's here now. It's absolutely wonderful and highly motivating for even extreme novices like me to attempt even the most simple figurative drawings, to imparting artistic techniques to the very advanced artist.

I've looked at a lot of books on drawing the figure and I would rate this one of (if not THE) best. Wonderful description of various techniques accompanied by clear and easily understood images. Plus a lavishly illustrated section of works by some of today's top figurative artists. If you only buy one book on drawing the figure, there's a strong argument to be made that it should be this one.

Hands down, the best book on figurative work I've read. If I could own only one book on figurative art (and I have over 70 in my library) this would be the one I keep. I am absolutely serious, I could get rid of every other book on figurative art I own and have everything I need or want in this single book. Just absolutely exceptional. I read it cover to cover my first weekend. Now I'm reworking my way through it as a workbook. Beautiful work.

Although I don't know Rob Zeller personally, I've admired his art for quite awhile. Still, when his book first came out I thought the last thing I needed was another book on figure drawing. I'm extremely glad I went ahead and ordered this. In addition to the gorgeous art, the book is very well written. I especially enjoyed the first (The Great Movements in Figurative Art) and last (The Creative Process) chapters because this type of information isn't always included in instructional figure drawing books. Mr. Zeller did a great job of hitting the highlights of all the major movements without boring us to tears, as so many of the dry art history books do. To the contrary, his writing is concise, informative and entertaining. The last chapter describes the "working method" for a diverse group of artists, including Wyeth (Andrew), Freud, Currin, Assael, Shanks, and Zeller himself. The other standout chapter for me is The Artist's Sketchbook. Mr. Zeller makes a great case for developing a sketchbook habit and especially emphasizes the importance of working from a live model, beginning the chapter by saying, "Making figure drawing a part of your regular routine is a primary means of truly mastering it." I couldn't agree more. He presents lovely sketches of his daughter sleeping with their cat as well as offering a glimpse into the sketchbooks of many other fine contemporary artists. All this and I haven't even gotten to the instructional chapters, which include great information on drawing standing and reclining figures, and portrait drawing and painting. Finding the gesture, establishing proportions, blocking in (anatomy, light, and shadow), modeling form, and making refinements are covered extensively. Mr. Zeller's selection of artwork is truly exceptional and relevant to the text, and the quality of the reproductions are outstanding. Given all this, I was surprised at the reasonable price of this book. Highly, highly recommend!

About a third of the way through this book, author Rob Zeller makes an extraordinary statement. In referring to Andrew Loomis's classic "Figurative Drawing for All It's Worth," he says "The instructional section of this book is a meager attempt to walk in that book's footsteps."Wow. What a statement. I immediately sought out the Loomis book, and was blown away. And while there's nothing meager about Zeller's book, which is an excellent resource, he does have a point.If, like me, you're a beginner with a real commitment to learning figurative drawing, Loomis's book remains the most systematic and comprehensive starting point.Much respect to Rob Zeller for producing a fine guidebook into the fundamental aspects of figurative work: but start with Loomis.

This book seems to have many problems in keeping linear. I will say for those who are students of this campaign there is some very wonderful quotes from those who were there. All in all it was a decent book, just too much jumping around, and it seemed a little rushed.

I ordered this book based on the publisher's description (and cover artwork), expecting it to detail Operation Mercury from a balanced point of view, albeit with an emphasis on the German side of the operation and with sources from the various sides of the battle, i.e. German, British, Cretan, etc. Unfortunatley it is not at all like that, rather the author's listed sources are largely previously published English secondary sources, very little use of in-text citations and when he does it is mostly to the same few sources. Not that I was expecting every photo to be a previoulsy unpublished photo, but the photos were disappointing also and mostly of/from the Allied soldiers perspective. The style of writing is more appropriate for a book written by a print jounalist rather than a serious historical study of the battle and its participants. I don't doubt that the author put hardwork into this volume, but it is NOT as advertised by the publisher.

Simeti feels the isolation of being an expatriate and outsider, although she claims to welcome this perspective when faced with frustration and disgust at the pervading political corruption and corrosive effects of the Mafia on everyday life. Despite her natural diffidence, she shares personal insights that makeOn Persephone's Island as compelling as her prose. Simeti intersperses rich helpings of Sicilian history and culture with mundane events and insight into what motivates the peasants essential to the survival of the family farm. And she makes pessimistic observations about the complexity of changing times in a society where the persistent reliance on feudal relationships and agriculture is finally crumbling. Mary Taylor Simeti is an American expert in Sicilian medieval and culinary history. Simeti’s book, On Persephone’s Island: A Sicilian Journal, chronicles a year on Sicily, the Mediterranean island that she called her permanent home after visiting for a year. Her other books include Pomp and Sustenance: Twenty-five Centuries of Sicilian Food, Sicilian Food: Recipes from Italy's Abundant Isle and more. I fouind much of this very slow-going and way too much detail to be an enjoyable read. I got lost in the multiple holidays, horticulture and the many family outings (this is why I prefer fiction often because a good writer deletes all the extraneous detail to get to the themes). HOWEVER, there was a revelation when I actually was in Sicily. The details did help me understand what I was seeing and what I was eating...down to the gelato on a brioche and the fried chickpea patties! So if you are planning to go to Sicily, this book will set the stage for a great visit.

I bought this book because I plan to travel to Sicily next spring and am currently reading up on it so that I have as much understanding about this fascinating place as one can gain from an armchair, and also to prepare me for the actual experience of going there.I was delighted to see that Mary Taylor Simeti had done a travelogue of Sicily, because I remembered her charming tale of Queen Constance and her various travels around Italy that I read some years ago. I was not disappointed in this book. Simeti plans her book around a year, starting with the old New Year that occurred November 1st, with the Feast of the Dead, and gradually working her way around the seasons so that the end of the book finished one year later.Although she spends much time discussing her garden and her various meanderings around the Sicilian countryside with her family, this book is also a snapshot of life in Sicily during 1982-1983. I was a young woman then, freshly married, and her vivid prose enabled me to go back in time nearly thirty years ago, to re-remember events that I had completely gotten, such as the Italian government's successful attempts to divert the lava flow of Mount Etna, so that it did not go into populated areas. (They did this using dynamite). But I loved this book because of Simeti's relentless quest for the shadow of Persephone and the Greek civilization that existed on Sicily so many years ago. Highly recommended. Four stars.

I found this book by looking at Amazon offerings about Sicily. I borrowed it through interlibrary loan and decided I must have it in my permanent collection. This book is a treasure. Yes, it's dated. It first came out in 1986. But much of what she wrote about is timeless. Her personal story is just a part of the book. Sicily is the focus. The knowledge she shares will help you understand the island if you're planning to visit. If you research her, you'll find out that she and her husband still make wine. She has had a remarkable life and I'm grateful that she shared her story with all of us.

The author paints a lovely portrait of what life is like for an American expatriate- who is also wife and mother- in Sicily.Every aspect of daily Sicilian life is recounted: the feasts and celebrations, the rural traditions, the city routines. Knowing Sicily well, I knew all these depictions to be true.I did feel that the book went on a bit too long, however, and seemed at times considerably repetitive and a bit too langorous. Yet the writing is beautiful and intelligent, and the writer is enjoying painting her Sicilian life in all its detail.Were it slightly more concise, it would be a perfect read!

A trip through the seasons of Sicily from the pen of an American expat married to a Sicilian landowner. Mary Taylor Semiti's writing is both erudite and intimate. I so looked forward to curling up with this book, and did my very best to make it last. Even if you have no plans to travel there, this book offers a close-up view of this ancient, magic island and the forces that made her the way she is. Highly recommend.

I was going to Sicily and this book was recommended to me. It far exceeded my expectations--so much so that now that I have spent time in Sicily I want to reread it. It is a well written account of an ex-patriate's life abroad. She is a very sensitive woman to all her surroundings.

I read this while preparing for a month-long solo exploration of Sicily and its ancient Greek sights. This really augmented my travel research by providing an on-the-ground eyes experience by an outsider/insider telling how she was able to transition from out to in.

Another lovely book from Teckentrup except for one glaring error. When reading this book the first time to my 2.5 year old, she pointed out that while the text is referring to sea turtles, the picture is of land turtles - they don't have flippers. If a toddler knows this, how come it slipped by the editors?

I was excited about this hardcover book with beautiful illustrations about the moon....except the moon phases are totally inaccurate. Love the idea of the moon shape cut out, but children are young and impressionable and will now always remember the way the moon shape is depicted in this book. Fortunately, my daughter recently learned about the way the moon looks in real life prior to reading this book. I wish I did not buy this book, and I hope that they change this in future editions of the book.

I pre-ordered this book and was excited to receive it in the mail today. The illustrations of the animals are adorable and really well done. However (and unfortunately, I find it to be a big one), the moon is the wrong shape. That's a pretty glaring error in a book *about* the moon. Also, the phases of the moon are out of order. In the book, the moon grows from crescent to full moon but then jumps straight to the new moon. The next page returns to the full moon and then wanes.I think the idea of a cutout book is fun and appealing to children and adults. In this case, though, a cutout can't be implemented without sacrificing accuracy and it ends up feeling gimmicky. If the book had used simple illustrations, it would have been just lovely. The moon could have been portrayed properly and the book could have been used to help teach children about the moon cycle.

My 18-month-old is obsessed with the moon, so I got her this book, and she loves it. The pages are thick high quality stock that doesn't bend or tear too easily, and the book is a nice large size (we're just coming out of the board book phase, so at least the book seems large to me). The writing is fine, nothing super special, though I do like how some pages talk about bird migration, sea turtles laying eggs, and other cyclical things that relate to the moon. The illustrations are just beautiful, and the moon cutouts are fun. A beautiful book that would make a nice gift.

This book is great! Our daughter is two and kept trying to put her fingers in the moon, though, so we are putting it up until she’s bigger. The pages are nice, thick, paper and the images are amazing!

My 18 month old daughter is obsessed with the moon, we got this book and she loves to read it over and over again, the pictures are beautiful and words are just enough to keep her attention!

This book is great for the young and early readers. The art is fun, unique and water color styled with heavy quality paper stock. My kids and really enjoyed it

I don’t know if you have noted any of those prophecies lately, but, believe me, they describe the times we are going through.—President Ronald Reagan, 1983Suppose someone wrote and published the ultimate compendium of music history…but left out any mention of Beethoven, the Beatles, or Garth Brooks.Or the French produced a video tour of Paris…with nary a glimpse of Notre Dame, the Louvre, or the Eiffel Tower.Imagine a math textbook containing an entire year’s curriculum…never once using or discussing the number one.When an authoritative resource claims expertise in a particular field of knowledge, we usually expect it to touch on the most prominent subjects within its purview.That’s why somany Christians read their Bibles—and biblical prophetic passages in particular—fully confident that it must somehow reveal something about the role of America in the end times. People ask me this question at churches, at conferences, on radio and television programs. And as I have talked with my friends and colleagues who teach around the United States and around the world, they confirm that the most-asked question in all of Bible prophecy is: What is America’s role in the end times? You rarely, if ever, hear someone wondering about the role of New Zealand, Scotland, Australia,Mexico, or Brazil in the end times.Don’t the people in these nations matter as much as American citizens? Although our focus on America’s destiny might be considered arrogant by non-Americans, it is nevertheless legitimate, because the United States is themost powerful nation in history and the lone surviving superpower in the world today.Nothing NewThe question about America and biblical prophecy goes way back in our history. I don’t know who first raised it, but it was certainly in the air in the nineteenth century. In 1859, Frances Rolleston authored a work titled Notes on the Apocalypse, as Explained by the Hebrew Scriptures: The Place in Prophecy ofAmerica and Australia Being Pointed Out. Rollestonmade the case that America was the two-horned beast in Revelation 13.In 1884, Uriah Smith wrote a book titled The United States in the Light of Prophecy; Or an Exposition of Rev. 13:11–17. (Authors back then loved long titles.) For Smith it was unthinkable that the United States would not be mentioned in the Bible. He said, “The question naturally arises, what part has the United States to act in these scenes? For it must seem reasonable and probable that a nation which has risen as suddenly as ours, andmade such unparalleled progress,must be a subject of divine prophecy.” Smith also maintained that America was the beast of Revelation 13:11–17—a view that seems to have prevailed in that day. Many theories have sprung up since that time. (We’ll explore a few of them in depth in the next chapter.) History reveals that people in every generation since the founding of this great nation have wondered about America’s future.We live in interesting times; it’s no wonder that the topic attracts ever more fascination. Few may ask this question audibly, but many of us ponder it in the hidden corridors of our minds. Peggy Noonan relates the following poignant story, expressing the foreboding of many Americans today.A few weeks ago I was reading Christopher Lawford’s lovely, candid and affectionate remembrance of growing up in a particular time and place with a particular family, the Kennedys, circa roughly 1950–2000. It’s called “Symptoms ofWithdrawal.” At the end he quotes his Uncle Teddy. Christopher, Ted Kennedy and a few family members had gathered one night and were having a drink in Mr. Lawford’s mother’s apartment in Manhattan. Teddy was expansive. If he hadn’t gone into politics he would have been an opera singer, he told them, and visited small Italian villages and had pasta every day for lunch. “Singing at la Scala in front of three thousand people throwing flowers at you. Then going out for dinner and having more pasta.” Everyone was laughing. Then, writes Mr. Lawford, Teddy “took a long, slow gulp of his vodka and tonic, thought for a moment, and changed tack. ‘I’m glad I’m not going to be around when you guys are my age.’ I asked him why, and he said, ‘Because when you guys are my age, the whole thing is going to fall apart.’”Mr. Lawford continued, “The statement hung there, suspended in the realm of ‘maybe we shouldn’t go there.’ Nobody wanted to touch it. After a few moments of heavy silence, my uncle moved on.”One might be tempted to conclude, “If Ted Kennedy knows that things are going to fall apart, then shouldn’t the rest of us?” Maybe we do. Maybe that’s why our pop culture has gone apocalyptic. Maybe we all sense that the train has derailed but we just don’t want to admit it. We’d rather spend our remaining moments of sweet denial—as the cars plummet from the railroad bridge to the valley floor—enjoying our coffee and Sudoku.What does lie ahead? I’m sure that at one time or another you’ve wondered where America is headed. You may have asked yourself questions like these:• Does the Bible have anything to say about America in the last days?• How does the United States fit into God’s prophetic program?• Will America survive?• Will the United States be sucked into the Middle East maelstrom?• Could America’s addiction to oil be its undoing?• Will the United States become part of a North American union with Canada and Mexico?• Will America be destroyed by a nuclear attack?• Could America collapse in on itself as a result of moral corruption?• Is there any hope for America? for the future?We’ll explore these questions andmany others in the pages that follow. Why is America not mentioned in the Bible? America is arguably greater than the other nations that are mentioned, then why is it not mentioned? Did America take the omniscient God by surprise? Then why? Dr. Hitchcock gives us his opinion and it is certainly worthy of consideration!

The author broke down in understandable language what is happening & what can happen to America if we continue going down the path we are going. He lays out America's choices as a nation.

I'm very excited about this book. I started reading it yesterday & I don't want to put it down. I'm intrigued by Biblical Prophecy that's directly supported w/scripture. This is that book. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys books geared towards Christian believers. Thank-you Mark Hitchcock!

This author makes words jump off the page. His other end times books are judiciously researched. Plan to read them all and attend his speaking engagements.

This book is really an interesting book and since I have great faith in the author, Mark Hitchcock I wasn't hesitant to purchase it. I would recommend to anyone interested in what is going to happen to the United States in the end times.

Lots of great views and "whys". Explains in a simple way of what could and will happen and why.Great for people who want or need an understanding of Revelation and where we, as a country,stand and need to do. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants answers and can getthem in an easy, understandable way. Mark Hitchcock does a great job in all his writings and teachings.
