Mad Dogs and Englishmen: Rabies in Britain, 1830-2000 (Science, Technology and Medicine in Modern History)

Review

'Rabies is both rare and highly emotive. Pemberton and Worboys use this unusual combination to produce a stunning history of the disease, in which human beings and dogs have equal parts to play. The authors offer a success story, but a peculiarly British one, in which pet lovers, antivivisectionists and individualists do battle against the State, veterinarians, and medical scientists. They show that the issues were never clear-cut, and their dispassionate analysis develops a rich and evocative narrative which is enriched by a series of brilliantly chosen illustrations. This is the social history of medicine at its very best.' - W. F. Bynum, University College London, UK 'Essential reading for anyone interested in British anxieties and preoccupations about health, dogs, class and gender domination, and the state as protector from nature's threats. This is a lively and compelling account of how Britons created different visions of rabies at different times - from the horrors of hydrophobia, through germ theories, quarantines, and "Pet Passports"'. - Susan D. Jones, University of Minnesota, USA 'This energetic, engaging and well-crafted study offers a textured account of professional, popular and state responses to rabies, demonstrating how dread of 'Canine Madness' revealed a great deal about the society from which it emerged. This riveting book makes an original and important contribution to the history of medicine and social and cultural history of Britain.' - Hilary Marland, University of Warwick, UK 'This is a gem of a book, full of fascinating nuggets, clearly written and extensively referenced, with an impressive array of illustrative material and quotes, which generate a vivid sense of atmosphere and attitudes. Furthermore, it has enormous contemporary relevance for the global control and elimination of dog rabies. All in all, a highly recommended read that should appeal to vets, medics, animal welfarists and historians alike.' - Sarah Cleaveland, The Veterinary Record 'This book displays many of the positive qualities and some of the limitations of the kind of social history which has developed in Britain since Walton's early work on rabies in England. The authors are two respected medical historians who succeed in providing a careful analysis of the social setting in which scientific investigations were conducted in the 19th and 20th centuries.' - Joseph Melling, Reviews in History 'This excellent book is a must for any veterinary practice or medical library...This book will not only be of interest to veterinary surgeons, doctors, nurses and veterinary nurses, but to anyone who is interested in the history of rabies.' - Heather Briggs, Veterinary Times Commended in the Basis of Medicine category of the 2008 BMA Medical Book Competition. 'This is an excellent history, well-written in a style of interest to professional and clinical historians alike.' - BMA Medical Book Competition Committee 'Mad Dogs and Englishmen is a trove of fascinating material on a very diverse range of topics...It is crisply and compellingly written.' - Seamus Sweeney, The Times Literary Supplement 'Pemberton and Worboys have written a fascinating chronicle of the vicissitudes in the understanding and treatment of rabies over the last two centuries. And since rabies loomed large in British consciousness, even when it was rare on the ground, they have also illuminated a range of larger issues in the history of medicine, public health and the relation of people to other animals.' - Harriet Ritvo, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, British Journal for the History of Science

This book turned out so much better than I had been expecting. In all honesty, I had been debating whether I really NEEDED this book before my finger accidently-on-purpose clicked the purchase button. In the weeks leading up to that moment I thought, "Do I really want to read a book filled purely with character development on all the people in this series when all I really care about is Jack, Death, and Evie?" It turns out that yes, I truly did need a bit of background on some the Major Arcana. Why? Because it turns out that there are some seriously cool characters in this story that will break your heart, fill you with hope, and make you giggle like a crazy person when you read their personal chapters.I admit that not every character was my cup of tea, and more than once I struggled to remember what parts some of them had played in the series already. HOWEVER, I fell head-over-heels for some of them. Stellan, for example, cracked me up! He was so witty and interesting as he explained his strange situation. His voice leapt off the pages, and I felt like I really got to know his personality within his little chapter. Calanthe is another one whose story pulled me in unbelievably fast. Her sweet encounters with Joules, the Tower, left me smiling uncontrollably. They were so flirty and fun, and afterwards I felt amazed that Mrs. Cole could do this to me--make me feel so much for two characters I barely knew. Similarly, Circe's story ruined me--in the best way, of course. I was thrown into a different kind of romance that included the sweetest backstory imaginable and absolutely lovely, lighthearted dialogue. I had more than a few crocodile tears dotting my cheeks by the time I finished her chapter.Overall, Mrs. Cole makes you connect with each character in a remarkably deep way within just a few pages of each chapter. I truly loved this book for all the feels it gave me when I really hadn't been expecting more than some info on the powers and whatnot all the characters wield. All the stories within this book are interesting at the very least. I also want to note that since this book doubles as an organized guide filled with all the details about The Game, I now have a better understanding of who's who and know how everything started. Of course, after everything I'm extra eager for the next book to read about not just Jack and Death and Evie, but also all the other players who I now know have their own interesting plans...

Remains to be seen if this is necessary for the series, but it was a fun read. You don't realize just how many characters we have not seen yet in this series that can take the story to very different levels. I kind of feel this is more for the TV adaptation of this series, to expand the stories and extend the possibilities, obviously the show can't be all Evie Green all the time. But some of this is really not for teens or young adults. There is nothing too explicit described in detail, but there are scenarios of sex and violence I think is appropriate for an 18 or older audience. I have kind of felt that the whole series is a little more adult than young adult to be honest. I don't think I'd let my children read this and for sure not this extra book. But for adults, this is an excellent series. The sneak peak was just cruel though. LOL thankfully I only have to wait 2 more weeks for it to arrive. But It's been a long time since there has been addition to this series. It's been a very long wait. On a cliffhanger. This was a nice fast read to ramp things back up again.

I love this series! Love. It. I pretty much pre-ordered this and the next installment without even caring what the description said. However, you should know going in that this book is not really a story. It is not the next chapter of the series. The book description should really be more clear about what it is. It is basically a character guide of all the Arcana, with some anecdotes thrown in-some of which we have already read in other books (although some from different viewpoints). It does give a story of the start of the games, and a better description of the flash. It is nice to get backstory on all the arcana characters, but it isn't really a book/story. Each arcana gets a short chapter (for lack of a better term), which includes a list of things like name, aka, powers, skills, weapons, tableau, icon, characteristics, and who they were before the flash. Some Arcana then have a short story line of their lives leading up to the flash (not all, and some look redacted). I don't know if it is worth the cost, but I probably would have bought it any way, even if I had known (really, it is still just $3.99).

I just finished reading Day Zero and I literally am blown away. What Ms. Cole can do with so few pages and where she takes her readers...i am spellbound. I was sincerely surprised that the book has finished, just as it was getting good...but at least, her next full length "Arcana Rising" is just two weeks away (whew).I'll be honest...I had my doubts with this one. I wanted to know what happened after the horrible cliff hanger from the last book. I wasn't all that interested in knowing about what the other characters were up to or their state of mind before the flash. But now, i realized the brilliance of this book because it lets you know the players as well as keeps it both real and fresh. It's a reminder still that the game is one for the young, a majority of whom are good ones, thrust into that scene unexpectedly. It's thrilling and slightly mad at the same time. For all the fans out there, pick this book up. It's a short but worthy addition to the collection. And for those encountering the series for the first time, all I can say is: what are you waiting for? Grab a copy or two, like I did. This series is a must read! No regrets.

This reminded me of Twilight without the vampires. Sad, unwanted, loner main female lead character. Super cute, unbelievably supportive, loving male lead character. The writing was redundant. Character experiences the same thing over and over and over without ever allowing anyone to help or snapping. I just wanted it to end. Read the preview for book two thinking now it'll move forward and evolve. Nope. I'm out.

I read this book years ago but stumbled upon it in my library and had to come write a review!Reading the blurb immediately brought back all the feels! I have re-read this series maybe twice since reading it initially which alone shows just how good it is. This book is an emotionally tough book as it revolves around mental and physical abuse. Emma Thomas has a dark secret that she desperately tries to keep hidden from everyone around her, so that the perfect facade around her adoptive family isn’t broken. Her only goal is to maintain her perfect GPA and extracurriculars so that she may get a full scholarship to college so that she can escape her personal hell and never look back. That is until a new boy at school Evan Matthews notices her, and refuses to let her go back to being invisible. He literally demolishes her walls and she finds herself unwillingly falling for him while simultaneously trying to shield him from the terrors of her life which is near impossible to do. This books is amazing and hands down one of the best that I have ever read. It will make you cry a lot but the journey you will take with Emma will be all worth it I promise you! It’s so great to see all the amount of positive feedback that this series has gotten in the last few years, when I first read Reason to Breathe it didn’t have that many reviews. But believe me when I say it deserves every positive thing that people from around the world have said about it.For more fun book reviews checkout my blog at obsessivecompulsivereads.com :)

Wow where do I begin? First this is the first book buy this author that I’ve read, and of course won’t be the last. I do have to finish this series lol.So I finished this book at one in the morning with tears that wouldn’t stop. I don’t even know where to start. This gets right to it from the very first page. I don’t know what to say without giving anything away, except that,1. I HATE, H.A.T.E Emma’s aunt, she is the cruelest person ever2. Emma’s uncle is just as bad and messed up to, first of all he lets what happens, happen.3. Sara, Emma’s best friend, and I mean she’s the best. To me there would be know surviving ever if Emma didn’t have her.4. Evan, he’s also the best. He’s the greatest person to ever come along next to Sara. And of course there’s5. Emma, you just cry for her and feel so horrible for all the stuff she goes through and the abuse from her aunt. I don’t even know how she survived as long as she has till now.“You have a night game on Friday, right?” he confirmed as we climbed the stairs. “Yes.” “What are you doing after school, before the game?” “Probably staying at school and doing homework or whatever.” “Do you want to get something to eat?” he asked, hesitating on the landing before opening the double doors leading to the hall. I stopped, and so did my heart. “And yes, this would be a date, so that we’re clear,” he stated with a smirk. I stopped breathing too. “Okay.” I exhaled, still unable to move. I really just agreed to go on a date?!After Mr. Hodges began his lecture on the bones in the hand, I scribbled on a blank piece of paper, Are you already assuming there’s an us? Evan wrote in response, NOT YET. I still didn’t understand what that meant and drew my eyebrows together, so he wrote, I’M GETTING READY FOR WHEN THERE IS.Emma’s aunt is the worst person ever and cruelest and most abusive person towards her. Her dad past away sadly when she was young, and then her mom sadly became unable to care for her and wasn’t exactly the best, so her dads brother and wife became her guardians. To some people you would think that’s a good thing, but for Emma it’s not.Thankfully Emma, had Sara the greatest best friend anyone could ever ask for. Sara could be quite funny at times but really cared truly about Emma. The love they had like sisters was the best. I truly believe if Emma didn’t have her as a friend things would of been a lot worse. I don’t know how many times I was shaking and saying no don’t do it, so afraid that something so bad was going to happen. Or that her aunt was going to find out and it was going to be BAD, really bad. I also keep thinking a saying why doesn’t Sara, or Evan just freakin say something. I was ready to pull my hair out or have a heart attack, if Emma wouldn’t say anything then they should just say something. Again more tears and tears.Sara’s shoulders sank as she slowly lifted her head, revealing the tears streaming down her cheeks. “Emma, you have to tell someone.” Her words sounded desperate and urgent. “If you don’t, then I will.” “No, you won’t,” I snapped, my icy tone that made Sara wince. “What do you mean?” she demanded, even more passionately. “Did you see your back? The blood was seeping through your shirt during the game. Emma, I’m afraid some morning when I pull up to get you, you won’t come out. I care about you, and I can’t watch her do this to you.”Well I felt so much better, when I would be worrying and then nothing would happen, until you get to the last page. Man I’m telling you, that’s just wrong. I mean wrong, ending the way it did. I couldn’t stop the tears and didn’t know what to say.I’m just glad I came across this series that has already been out for a while. I don’t know how I would feel if I had to wait for the next book. I think I would of been such a mess.“Well, let’s get you back to hell before the devil realizes you’re not home.”So like I said it gets right to it from the very beginning, it’s a really good, and written very well, but for some people it might not be easy to read. There is a lot of abuse that you read and go through with Emma, that it can be hard to read.I don’t know what else to say. I can’t say much without giving stuff away, except that I know I’m not waiting another minute to read the 2nd book. If I wait any longer, I think I’ll really lose it, or go crazy. In the balance of love and loss, it was love that made me struggle to… Breathe.

It's the setting of the book. It's because she's only 16, part of the why she's so helpless. We all know she's been abused. But the extent of it was so much I cringed. I'm sure there must be some reasons to explain Carol's behaviors. And the reason Emma stayed and didn't say anything was understandable. But her actions.. I got hooked from the beginning because she was so fierce and strong.. though later on I had to shake my head at her decisions and her actions. It's this feeling that you wish you could reach your arms into the book and shake her or protect her that gives this book a 5 stars. And omg... Evan Matthews... <3

My situation begins a couple of months ago when I suddenly had an old filling fall out and went to the dentist to have this taken care of. And of course, he wanted me to have the complete package: Root Canal and Crown. Yet I talked him into a filling and went home to research a BETTER WAY so my body would heal naturally! This book Cure Tooth Decay has made a HUGE difference in dental health in my teeth and gums (I have Gingivitis and there is great information in this book on how to treat this naturally). What is so remarkable about this book is that it explains how proper nutrition will allow the teeth and even the gums to heal. Moreover this book explains how correct nutrition (in chapters 3 - 6) will be very healing for teeth and for gums as well. .Results so far for me: After following this book just a short time and also Waterpiking and other home treatments, I am very happy to report that my gums are improving and my teeth are not as sensitive. In addition to this, my tooth with the replacement filling has healed just fine, without a Root Canal or Crown etc! And I am making progress every day! By the time I go back for my next dental checkup in mid March of 2014, I believe that I will have a great checkup and report! This is a MUST HAVE book in my opinion to anyone concerned about dental health!

I have a toddler who went to see the dentist and I was pretty sure she was going to need work done on her front teeth. They were chalky all over and yellow near the top. Sure enough the dentist recommended that the front 4 teeth be capped. I kind of freaked out because she would have to be sedated. I read this book. I had 2 months until her sedation appointment, so I thought I would get give it a month and if I saw some improvement I would approach the dentist. Within in 2 weeks her teeth were shiny instead of chalky. The outer 2 teeth look almost perfect. One front tooth is looking great. The other is still struggling, but the bottom part of the tooth is is white and shiny. Before I would have said the two front teeth were in the same state of decay, but now the left one is markedly better. The dentist is willing to work with me and X-ray her teeth every 6 weeks and see if we see improvement and sees no reason why we need immediate work done as long as we do not see them worsening. Yay!What I did:Took out all refined sugar from her diet. No candy or juice - except orange juice - fortified with vitamin a and d. I still let her have fruit, she eats mostly frozen mangos and bananas.Very little processed food (an occasional cracker or bowl of pasta)1-2 cups of whole raw milk (I purée it with banana and freeze it and call it ice cream because she doesn't like milk that much)Bone broth chicken potato soup - I buy a rotisserie chicken from Costco each week. We eat all the chicken and then I take everything left over and boil it in my crock pot for 48 hours. I then make soup from the broth. I add all kinds of veggies and potatoes. She loves sipping the broth.I also sauté my veggies in virgin coconut oil.I brush her teeth 2x a day with coconut oil.At night she takes 5 ml of fermented cod liver oil. I know this sounds crazy, but she seems to like to cod liver oil. She just lays down and takes it. She even swishes it in her mouth sometimes and calls it yummy??!That all I have done and she no longer complains about her teeth hurting. I take her to the dentist for X-rays in two weeks. If I remember I will let you know what the dentist says. Crossing my fingers!Update *****Took my daughter in for x -rays. They showed decay really badly just on the one tooth I was worried about. The others looked like they might be "arrested", meaning the decay was halted and he would feel comfortable waiting and watching on those teeth. The dentist was very surprised there was no decay on the back of the teeth. He was very willing to work with me on whatever I wanted to do, but recommended getting teeth fixed because of the danger of the cavities progressing and losing the teeth. I have her scheduled to have the teeth fixed at the end of April.I have been doing some research and am going to try eggshells (recommended 1 crushed eggshell a day. You boil them and dry them and then put them in a banana smoothie). I update this is I remember. Here's to better X-rays next time.

I realized that what this book says also applies to my degenerating spine. Having done it, my back started to heal too. I realized that if my teeth were falling apart, than that maybe that also has to do with my back and I believe I was right too. I noticed as my teeth healed, so did my back.

In the past five years I have begun to have significant dental issues and it seems like even though I do all the dental treatments nothing really changes. It is like everything was great for two or three years and now it is back to I need scaling and my gums are inflamed despite the fact that I followed all of their rules. So I thought before I spend thousands of dollars more maybe I should try something different. Since this book is based on the work of Dr Weston Price I decided to give it a go.The first thing is there is no one size fits all I think you have to know your body and make choices based on your needs. Based on the book I have implemented a few changes and it has made a big difference. The first thing I did was ditch my toothpaste and mouthwash for products without glycerin, I added oil pulling with clove oil or peppermint every other day and the water pick in place of flossing every night, finally I added a ton of oil to my diet and fermented foods. As an example, I added a four-ounce glass of goat Keifer (in the morning) a pickle or pickled beets at lunch and four ounces of kombucha or red wine (at dinner) every day. Then I added in black seed oil and the fermented cod liver oil and MSM with chondroitin. As for the food suggestions, it was a little much but I added in more steamed veggies cooked with grass fed butter with hormone free meat or sustainable fish cooked with ghee and reduced my sugar intake. In six weeks the brown spots in the middle of my molars have disappeared, my teeth are not sensitive anymore, my gums do not bleed and my teeth look whiter. Additionally, my ankle no longer hurts and my hair is shiny. I am now searching for a dentist who follows this tradition but I am pleased with my progress. The only reason I took off a star is because I think some of the nutrition seemed a bit contradictory like for calcium why not eat more leafy greens like spinach or swiss chard? While I like the fish oil why not black seed oil and what about things like turmeric, mustard oil or garlic? Also, I am not sure raw eggs or blood products are a sound nutrition choice given the lead time in receiving food. Then again if you are not sure what to do or how to start give it a go.
