"Building Access is a seminal text that will be received with acclaim and become well-known for its reconstruction of how we think about access, disability, and design."—Rob Imrie, Goldsmiths University of London"Aimi Hamraie gifts us with a rare kind of book, one that skillfully weaves critical disability studies together with technology studies and architectural history to unpack the American project of designing and making built environments purportedly usable by all. They ask us to think harder about who counts as the everyone of Universal Design, and how knowledge of body variability is created. Crucially, the book probes the ways disability access politics is deeply entangled with race through whiteness, bodily norms, activism, and practices material segregation. Anyone who cares about the built environment, technoscience, or disability politics will want to read this important book."—Michelle Murphy, University of Toronto"Building Access is a persuasive, beautiful, and intrepidly researched book."—New Books Network"Hamraie’s skill in detailing the struggle, triumphs and ironies of this history makes this book a valuable addition to any critical architecture reading list."—Journal of Design History

This is an excellent book that traces the history of Universal Design. The more critical analysis of Building Access, however, comes in how Hamraie deftly navigates these subtle shifts in Universal Design, through the discursive elements that allow for greater disability legibility (or not) and the on-going relational realm of its authors, over time. This is a book about, of course, the history of Universal Design and where its stakes are today. Tt is also a book about epistemic activism, how concepts of "the user" shifted over time, and how our material world showcases who counts as a legible / illegible user. However, a review of Hamraie's book and its contents would ultimately be insufficient and unsatisfactory without also commending the structure of the book itself. Given the scope - historically, philosophically, and materially - of the topic at hand, Building Access is dense in the information compacted into the 261 pages and relentless in pushing on key historical pressure points. However, what needs to be noted and repeatedly noted is that, despite the magnitude of the task, knowledge, and history at hand, Hamraie writes in an extremely accessible way for their readers. Key concepts are clearly defined and explicated while their organization and constellation of thoughts are well-organized and easy to follow even for those who are new to the field of accessibility, disability, and design. The historical artifacts provided in the form of newspapers, articles, advertisements, and personal notes give an additional dimension for understanding how knowledge becomes materially manifested. The power of Building Access, then, lies in its analysis and methodology, one that showcases how history can be critical sites of evolution and how, by deftly, carefully, and critically tracing the nuanced changes of how knowledge is constructed, reproduced, and disseminated, we can better understand how the world is constructed, both by whom and for whom. Greater questions of how knowledge is geared and for whom knowledge is geared toward have, ultimately, an indisputable place in many urgent spaces of today.Three adjectives: Critical, provocative, creative
Dr. Hamraie's book covers an extensive history of the disability rights movement in the United States, and offers the most comprehensive collection of resources and analysis on the development of the Universal Design movement and building access. This book is engaging, richly-detailed, and written in an accessible language for novices to experts. Learning about the historical contexts in which the Universal Design and disability rights movements evolved over the last half-century offers a glimpse of the exciting future of architecture and the built-environment, one which the book eloquently points out will be beneficial to all citizens.
Beautiful book; insightful analysis; important world-making project.
Hamraie's Building Access is a fascinating and important critical history of Universal Design. Part of what makes this text so fascinating is the inclusion of over 80 images from rich archival research. By exploring the activist movements within Universal Design and how principles within architectural design are materialized in the world, Building Access serves as a broader history of how the built environment, architectural epistemology, and the politics of disability have mutually enacted one another.
