these are lead music like the bands use to play. If you will learn a few left hand chords it is really fun to fill in the left hand however you want. great selection of songs.

I love this book. It DOES force all the songs into key of C but if you're a good "RIGHT HANDED PIANO PLAYER" and bad left handed player & you love the 60's music, this is the book for you. They are simple to read and I love this book. As long as you know bare basics of CDEFGAB, and know bare basic chords for left hand, this book is great!!!

I like this book. For me, it's just right for fun piano playing. It's a very good book.

As a beginning pianist, this book gives me the opportunity to practice playing favorite songs to improve my skills

This book includes songs that I didn't have before, even though I have several 60s books. All the songs were familiar and sounded great! If you can play from a simple right hand and guitar chords, then the Fake Books are for you. I have several fake books, and this one is a pleasure to play from and sing along with.

This particular Fake Book was purchased as a gift and met all expectations of the purchaser and receiver! These books are a perfect match to the skill level and accomplishment of my self taught(!) piano player wife, who thoroughly enjoys them. I am accumulating an entire collection of them for her!

This is the first time that I've bought this publisher's promise about the quality of arrangements when it actually turned out to be true. If you think having all of your arrangements in the Key of C is low class then you won't buy this book or its set of arrangements, and you're probably a music professional. Otherwise there's plenty of opportunity here, with hints even, to add your own touches and favorites riffs to the arangements From "Baby Love" to "Moon River" to "The Girl From Ipanema" to "Born To Be Wild". The people who wrote these versions of these songs show they know how to add some satisfying touches which usually work more like the original versions than what you ordinarily expect to find in this generally depressing genre of "easy fake" songbooks. Just keep in mind that these versions have a lot in common with the "lead" sheets which professional musicians in the studio are often expected to sight read. (Plus...there are only four Beatles songs, which suggests something about the breadth of the selection.)

Loved it! Just full of the popular tunes I grew up with.

Confronting Christianity: 12 Hard Questions for the World's Largest Religion

Review

“This book is compelling reading, not only because of its intellectual rigor and the fact that it is beautifully written but also because of its honest, empathetic humanity. Readers will find themselves expertly guided on a journey that involves them not only in confronting Christianity but also in confronting themselves―their worldviews, hopes, fears, failures, and search for identity and satisfaction―and, finally, in confronting Christ as the altogether credible source of life as God means it to be.”―John C. Lennox, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics, University of Oxford“McLaughlin probes some of the trickiest cultural challenges to Christianity of our day and clearly demonstrates the breadth and richness of a Christian response. Confronting Christianity is well worth reading and pondering.”―Tyler J. VanderWeele, John L. Loeb and Frances Lehman Loeb Professor of Epidemiology and Director of the Human Flourishing Program, Harvard University“In the West, many people are persuaded by dominant secular narratives and think they already know what Christianity is about. In this bombshell of a book packed with myth-busting statistics, McLaughlin reveals the many surprises in authentic Christianity.”―Peter J. Williams, Principal, Tyndale House, Cambridge; author, Can We Trust the Gospels?“A deep and caring response to current criticisms and confrontations of the Christian faith fills Rebecca McLaughlin’s book. She speaks from real-life experience of the personal and intellectual challenges we encounter today in considering the claims of Jesus Christ. Her open and faithful answers to serious questions provide not an easy stroll through imagined virtual reality but an adventurous rocky pathway through true and abundant life.”―Ian Hutchinson, Professor of Nuclear Science and Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; author, Can a Scientist Believe in Miracles?“Apologetics with heart, discernment, empathy, and rigorous study. Confronting Christianity will help you understand the hard questions of the Christian faith while also igniting a love for neighbor. McLaughlin doesn’t shy away from tough questions about diversity and the nations, as well as slavery and facing America’s past and present. Her answers are not only insightful; they have the potential to transform a heart of stone to a heart of flesh. Take up and read.”―Trillia Newbell, author, If God Is For Us; Fear and Faith; and United“Rebecca McLaughlin refuses to duck the biggest challenges to the Christian faith and takes on the hardest questions with empathy, energy, and understanding. She has studied widely, thinks deeply, and argues very persuasively. This is an outstanding resource for the skeptic, the doubter, and anyone who is ready to engage with some compelling thinking.”―Sam Allberry, Speaker, Ravi Zacharias International Ministries; author, Is God Anti-Gay? and 7 Myths about Singleness“Rebecca McLaughlin’s defense of the Christian faith is what all defenses should be: sensitive, smart, and sound. This is apologetics done right―and exactly right for this age in which we live. Confronting Christianity is a book I will draw upon myself and will recommend widely to believers and skeptics alike.”―Karen Swallow Prior, author, On Reading Well and Fierce Convictions“Rebecca McLaughlin addresses the most frequent and pressing objections to Christianity in our time with unflinching honesty, rigorous clarity, and deep compassion. This book is written not merely for skeptics but also for those who have suffered much in this sin-sick, destructive world. It is brimming with hope and will surprise you―and likely change the way you think about Jesus.”―Jon Bloom, Cofounder, Desiring God; author, Not by Sight“What Christianity has to offer the world is bound up in its strangeness. Only a distinctive word can be truly good news in a world like this. In a secularizing age, though, Christianity is often not simply odd to the world but also unexplained and seemingly inexplicable. In this book, Rebecca McLaughlin takes seriously both the Bible and the questions of nonbelievers. If you’re a non-Christian and have wondered why Christians think and do as they do, this book will be a good start to exploring those questions. If you’re a believer, this book will not only equip you intellectually but also call you to compassion and empathy for your questioning, unbelieving neighbor, as well as prepare you to bear witness to the Light that has come into the world.”―Russell D. Moore, President, The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention“A fresh voice, arresting arguments, and an easy-to-read style. McLaughlin writes for curious thinkers everywhere, and handsomely repays the open-minded reader.”―Os Guinness, author, The Call

I don't claim to be a book reviewer. In fact, I usually don't write reviews of books - love 'em or hate 'em - due to time constraints. But when I DO review a book, I usually don't thoroughly read every word, every chapter. I read the opening chapter or two, skip around, get a sense of where the author and story are going, confirm my intuition with a random stab or two at deeper sections of the tome, then write my thoughts. I wanted to do this approach with CONFRONTING CHRISTIANITY, but got drawn in very early into Rebecca McLaughlin's writing style and the way she treated her material. The premise of C.C. is that Christianity has become a whipping post for secular humanists and that their criticisms require answers. McLaughlin provides answers to some very challenging questions. Doesn't Christianity degrade women? Isn't this faith outdated by science? How can we literally take the Bible at its word? How could a loving God send people to hell?If a Christian is unprepared to answer these and other questions, what will happen to our faith in another generation or two into the future? Ms. McLaughlin not only provides answers; she documents - like a PhD would be expected to - the supporting evidence.I mentioned that I failed at skipping around this book to get a summary of where the author is going. This is because the book reads like a crime novel to me. Despite my own Christian beliefs, I half-believed many of the charges against Christianity posed in the author's 12 questions. Or - more likely - never confronted them with my own research and response. Ms. McLaughlin fairly presents the questions / arguments that suppose Christianity is on the wane, quoting sources that support the claim. But then, she pauses, catches a breath and presents the facts that support the Christian religion and documents her answers. Despite my desire to finish the book quickly in my hit-and-run assault on the contents, I put aside all my other books for a couple of days and concentrated my energy on this can't-put-down book. (OK, who among us only reads one book at a time? Yeah - I didn't think so!)I'm not quite done with C.C., but will finish today. It is a solid read, a fun book for a Christian to absorb and in a fun way, makes us confront today's secular world's skepticism about a faith that has been answering similar questions for 2000 years.

I love this book. It is sometimes confessional, easy to read, and yet always thoughtful and thought provoking. Written from a conservative evangelical perspective, the author spends chapter after chapter answering unbelievers' questions and crticisms of the Christian faith with candor, grace, and wisdom. This would be a great book for a Sunday School class or a small group. I hope it gets a wide reading

“Confronting Christianity: 12 Hard Questions for the World’s Largest Religion” by Rebecca McLaughlin is an exhaustively foot-noted but none-the-less extremely readable treatise. Each of the chapters deals with one of the specified questions, and potential readers are urged to avail themselves of the table of contents to evaluate the book’s relevance to their own concerns.McLaughlin holds a PhD in renaissance literature from Cambridge University and a theology degree from Oak Hill College in London. She clearly has a firm grasp on the nuances of Christian history and sociology. Although she writes from a basis of fairly orthodox theology and biblical interpretation, she is honest about the ways in which the “human factor” has consistently interfered with the reality of the message initially delivered by God through the Hebrew Scriptures and the teachings of Jesus. She also includes effective references to contemporary material, such as the Harry Potter stories.Although I can find areas where my personal perspective differs with the author, they are not really substantive. I thoroughly concur with her view that science and belief in God are absolutely NOT mutually exclusive as long as both scientists and believers remain focused on truth and not their respective prejudices and assumptions. Likewise, I believe that her view of the way in which Jesus absolutely rejected the misogynistic attitudes of the culture of his era (and by extension, of subsequent followers who ignore his positive interactions with women) is totally on target. Whereas I can’t fully agree with her perspective on same-sex relationships, I can see where she’s coming from and find her discussion well-reasoned, compassionate, and open. She is definitely neither rigid nor dogmatic. This book is compact, and extremely accessible to the average reader who is not likely to want to go into the depth provided by the annotations, while none-the-less providing admirable opportunity for further investigation for those who seek it.

Rebecca Mclaughlin is a very religious person. She went to college with a three-inch wooden cross around her neck. She tells us that the number of Christians in the world is increasing, Christianity is the largest global belief system, it has the tightest grasp on truth, and is the best hope for the world, but there are some questions that Christians ask, which she addresses in the book, twelve of them.In the discussion of the twelve, she explains why we are better off by being religious, Christianity does not crush diversity, what do we mean by saying there is one true faith, religion enhances moral behavior, it reduces violence, and science has not disproved Christianity. She also discusses reading the Bible literally, how the Bible treats women, gay people, slavery, and how a loving God can allow suffering and send people to Hell. She gives readers a list of seven biblical principles, such as, it is better to give than to receive and love of money disappoints. She points out that Jesus weaves women into his preaching. She is opposed to homosexuality and believes that there is value in suffering. All in all, this is a good book for conservative Christians.

An amazing book on prayer, it is a joy to sit with someone who has seen as far into God as Sophrony. Much of what Sophrony says is beyond the ken of the average reader, myself very much included. Nonetheless there is a great deal of life-giving wisdom to be absorbed by anyone at any sage in their spiritual journey. The book also contains a lengthy appendix of prayers written by Sophrony. Ultimately the book is much more than just a manual on how to pray or a theology of prayer but really it is a masterpiece of living the contemplative life in Christ as understood in the Christian East. I think this is a book that can be read slowly over and over for years as one tries to enter into the endless depths of the Christian life.Blessings

Every page reads like a poem.

This is the testimony of an unique witness of the Eastern Orthodox tradition, which spans across two thousand years of history. The author, a former hermit in Mount Athos, is soaked in the wisdom of the ascetic, dogmatic and liturgical tradition of the radical Christianity represented by Orthodoxy. The essays included in this volume are not an easy read, but they provide us with a sober guide to perfection. No wonder why some people already regard the book as a classic. Don't miss it.

The book, On Prayer, should have been a better read, but the author does not have enoughskill to handle the subject as well as he should have. He was unnecessarily negative aboutthe physical methods employed to develop the Jesus Prayer, methods that have proven veryhelpful in past generations. His style is afflicted with a kind of verbosity that makesit difficult for the average reader to latch onto. I have no doubt as to the sincerityof the author but I do not deem him inspired either.

Amazon.com Review

The quest to understand humankind's place in the universe is an old one, perhaps as old as the human species itself. That quest is tinged with science, but also with magic, for, writes the paleontologist Loren Eiseley (1907-1977), a human being "is both pragmatist and mystic. He has been so since the beginning, and it may well be that the quality of his inquiring and perceptive intellect will cause him to remain so till the end." In this lively, literate set of essays, originally delivered in 1959 as a lecture series at the University of Cincinnati, Eiseley traces the history of science, giving special attention to the 18th and 19th centuries, which witnessed the rise of a kind of scientific inquiry that crossed narrow disciplines. Building on the ideas of Newton and Laplace, for instance, the Scottish scientist James Hutton developed the foundations of historical geology; Hutton's doctoral work had not been in physics but physiology, and his dissertation concerned the circulation of the blood, from which he evidently hit on the idea of considering the earth as a living organism. Eiseley moves on to discuss trends in evolutionary thought, putting in good words for such neglected figures as Jean Lamarck, a "much maligned thinker [who] glimpsed ecological change and adjustment before Darwin." Eiseley's explorations end with an admonition that our scientific understanding may well have outpaced our moral evolution, leading to the danger that "we have created an unbearable last idol for our worship"--namely, ourselves. His wise words remain compelling reading today. --Gregory McNamee

"Dr. Eiseley describes with zest and admiration the giant steps that have led man, in a scant three hundred years, to grasp the nature of his extraordinary past and to substitute a natural world for a world of divine creation and intervention. . . . An irresistible inducement to partake of the almost forgotten excitements of reflection."—New Yorker (New Yorker)"[This book] has a warm feeling for all natural phenomena; it has a rapport with man and his world and his problems; it has appraisal, and even blame and condemnation; but, above all, it has hope and belief. And it has the beauty of prose that characterizes Eiseley’s philosophical moods."—Chicago Sunday Tribune (Chicago Sunday Tribune)"There can be no question that Loren Eiseley maintains a place of eminence among nature writers. His extended explorations of human life and mind, set against the backdrop of our own and other universes are like those to be found in every book of nature writing currently available. . . . We now routinely expect our nature writers to leap across the chasm between science, natural history, and poetry with grace and ease. Eiseley made the leap at a time when science was science, and literature was, well, literature. . . . His writing delivered science to nonscientists in the lyrical language of earthly metaphor, irony, simile, and narrative, all paced like a good mystery."—Bloomsbury Review (Bloomsbury Review)

Another wonderful book by Eiseley! This should be required reading in every high school science course in the country. Throughout history, our vision has been narrowed due to the constriction of our tiny individual lifespan - 50 to 100 years at best. So we tend to see grandiose (often religious) motivations behind everything we observe in that tiny time-slice.But Nature is ever so slow, counting out the beat of time in eons, building the world in ways that are - though majestic - far simpler to understand. Here, the brilliant Eiseley poetically traces the path science has taken to lead us to our understanding of the ages that glaciers know.

This is not your typical history of organic evolution. Eiseley ruminates on the philosophical character and consequences of the various theories that lead to and culminated in evolution. Moreover he does not take an academic, historical approach; rather he uses a poetic one: he employs metaphors, imagery, allusions, and other tools more typical of a poem. The first four chapters detail how each of the world, death, life, and man became natural. In other words, how each became governed according to universal laws, gleaned by reason, without the intervention of a Divine Maker in earthly matters. "God, who had set the clocks ticking, was now an anomaly in his own universe." (p. 15). James Hutton's historical geology, Charles Lyell's mass historical extinctions, Darwin's evolutionism as applied to non-human species, and finally evolution as applied to humans - each find their poetic explication in these first four chapters. In Chapter Five, he discusses the consequences of making man natural on his psyche: "How Human is Man". "Man did something which at the same time revealed his continued need of the stability which had preserved his ancestors. Scarcely had he stepped across the border of the old instinctive world when he began to create the world of custom" (p. 124). Man, by using his newfound capacity of reason, created a new unnatural world, one outside his old instinctive nature. But reason created a short-lived security as it developed and is always developing new tools, for either beneficence or destruction, which threaten man's future. These tools do not have an end; they are means which presume a worthwhile purpose will be found. Now, always gazing outwards at these new tools, man has forgotten about his history and himself: he is on the verge of not being to be human (p. 135). Eiseley has grasped the paradox that by making man natural, by separating him from other men and the infinite, he has threatened his own humanity.Admittedly I found the last chapter to be difficult to understand and appreciate: I had to read it several times before it sank in. Here Eiseley fully engages in a poetic-philosophic narrative to discuss time and evolution. The gist is that man now can create the natural as he quotes Pascal: "'There is nothing which we cannot make natural ... there is nothing natural which we cannot destroy," (p. 159). Like the physicist who was afraid to fall through the vast molecular spaces (p. 153), man can generate his own view of what the world is, one that affects how he thinks and behaves to the point that what is natural is questioned. Ultimately, therefore, man should look inside himself rather than comb the depths of space, beyond the planets or between molecules. If you'd like to approach evolution from a different angle, this is it.

Good

An American classic. I would put this up there with Steven Jay Gould for thoughtful science writing; a genuine delight to read.

Anything Loren Eiseley wrote is great! I own all his books, I think.

Outstanding

Expert condensation of much of the material in Darwin's Century by one of our best nature writers

I received my book way before the due date. I am replacing my paperbacks of this author so it was very nice to find a hardback that was not a rip off. It was received just as described on the JSL website. Thank you JSL Books.

OK. I am 74. And an ex librarian. Maybe I am more comfortable with the printed page than looking up food counts on the internet. This book seems way faster to me. It is like a phone book where there is a handy large print word at the top of EVERY page that covers the foods on that page (see pictures). You can flip to the approximate page in seconds. And when you get there, it has all the information that is important to me. I don't have to look at one book or website for carbs and then search somewhere else for fat. lt covers thousands of ingredients which many KETO followers des;erately need if they do a lot of their own cooking. The other two books I got concentrated on prepared foods, frozen foods and restaurant foods and didn't include All the counts I needed. One reviewer commented on the lack of consistency in how portions were measured. I haven't found that a problem. If I have a cup of something and the book quotes the counts for a pint, it doesn't seem too hard to halve the amounts. I am more impressed that it covers so many ingredients! This book is 2" thick and 704 pages long.and includes more than 40,000 foods. I think the only thing I haven't found is Hemp Hearts which is a recent addition to our choices. The only con is that it's publication date is 2001..

Book arrived on time and is quite thick. Wish it showed sugar totals and sat. fat totals. Pretty comprehensive on some items. There is 11 pages on baby food and even exotic listiungs. Some errors however.. For example McDonalds lists beverages. There you think you would find listings for Coke, orange juice etc, and they are there but so is apple bran muffin and English muffin. It doesn't list oatmeal for McDonalds. Also, checked some total for calories etc for both regular foods and fast food and found many differences from the products website and this book. Not sure all the information is accurate

Comparing this food count book with those in stores -- it's helpful to see the format which is why I like Amazon where you can peek inside the books :) -- this book was the most comprehensive: a large number of foods reviewed in various forms and serving sizes. The categories (total calories, protein, carbs, sodium, fiber, fat and cholesterol) are what I needed to know. I didn't see the breakdown of saturated fat one of the reviewers mentioned (I just looked again, I have the 2d edition with the blue cover) but I don't need fat breakdown for my nutritional purposes. My only beef is with the formatting of the counts -- I wish it followed the order of the nutrition labels with fat first after total calories, followed by cholesterol, sodium, total carbs, fiber, and protein last. I don't need the breakdown of sugars for my purposes, so I'm okay with just listing total carbs and fiber, and leaving sugars out. Before I got used to using the book, I wanted to throw it across the room also. It helped me to mark in pencil the foods I frequently eat and later made up my own list which I keep a copy in the kitchen and a copy in the back of the book. The fast-food guide in the back section is very helpful. One day I was able to choose wisely at Jack in the Box and not blow my food counts for the day. I appreciate being able to count food pieces (50 blueberries) as I will count 25, halve all the food counts and add another piece of fruit for variety and nutrition. But I'm happy to use measuring cups, spoons and a scale at home. I found the book more comprehensive than Netzer's and many of the others out there, including various carb counters. It's not a book you can carry easily with you -- it's 704 pages! -- but it's a good reference book for home. I keep another smaller food count book in the car and approximate when I eat out, which outings I limit so I have more control over what I eat and my pocketbook.

Wish there or less processed foods and more natural foods in this book . Wish there were more healthy restaurant choices, and that so many fast food items listed .

This book has everything needed to keep track of the food you eat. I recently had bariatric surgery and for me it is very important to get the correct amount of protein, carbs, fat and calories each day. I bought the book for this purpose and it has been helpful. It even includes a section for some restaurants! The only reason why it did not get 5 stars is because there are so many options for each item it can be a bit confusing.

Bought this for Helping to keep Track of Carbs for Diabetes. Great Book!! Thank You Amazon

I wish they'd come out with an updated version. I bought this in 2003 and needed a new one so had to get it. Still love it.

This is a very good source of nutritional information. I had a copy but loaned it out and it didn't come back. Needed a convenient source of nutritional information
