"Dr. Pearlman's book offers parenting advice that is effective in every situation. Chock-full of practical applications, this book will help you ease out of those challenging situations every parent faces."—Dr. Shefali Tsabary, clinical psychologist and New York Times bestselling author of The Conscious Parent and The Awakened Family"I ask three things of the books I read. I want to learn something, I want to laugh, and, when a book is really special, I get to forge a personal connection with a writer for as long as I turn the pages. Catherine Pearlman has given me all three in this book, and much more. She’s given me a resource I will refer back to over and over again, both as a writer and a parent."—Jessica Lahey, Author, New York Times bestseller The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed "Fun, insightful, straightforward advice that can really make your family life happier." —KJ Dell'Antonia, New York Times Well Family Columnist

This book provided phenomenal insight into parenting traps that suck the joy right out of your interactions with your kids. Even as the parent of teenagers, I found considerable practical, easily applicable advice for how to avoid power struggles and get my kids doing more of what they should be on so many levels. Dr. Pearlman's step by step approach was not only highly systematic and easy to adopt (and adapt to infinite varieties of behavior), but her authorial voice was so engaging that I loved every minute I spent with her. It was like having a parenting chat over coffee with your best friend except the advice is actually scientifically supported, rigorously researched and effective! I cannot recommend this book highly enough to any parent looking to both improve child behavior and better enjoy their family life.
I wish I could go back in time to when my kids were toddlers and apply the lessons I learned in this book, it would save me years of suffering! But even now, with two middle schoolers, the lessons I've learned from the book are already working their magic. "Ignore It!" is a quick easy read that I recommend to parents of any age children (as the author says, it's never too late to start applying the philosophies she outlines). The writing is straightforward and clear, the instructions are explained thoroughly, and the anecdotal stories and examples are easy to relate to. Catherine Pearlman is wise, compassionate, encouraging, and hilarious throughout the book. If you put her plan into action, you will see annoying behaviors diminished and there will be greater peace in your home. That's what I've experienced so far in the weeks since I finished the book. And most importantly, if I can spend less time being driven crazy by my kids or fighting with them, I'm able to focus on our relationship and actually enjoy the wonderful people they are.
I needed this book! It helped remind me that there is no winner in a protracted power struggle between my kids and me. I have a 17 year old and a 2 year old, and reminding myself to "ignore it!" helps with both. Yesterday the 2 yr old wanted ice cream before dinner. Our darn refrigerator has a freezer drawer right at toddler level, so he got out the ice cream, the scoop, and the bowl. He was so proud of himself. It was really cute, and while I do sometimes offer him ice cream at other times during the day, I'd already let it be known that it was almost dinner time and that we would be eating chicken and potatoes. I was afraid if I gave in, he would think he could help himself to ice cream any time he wanted. He had a full-blown meltdown unlike any I've seen before. Usually, I would try to comfort him and reason with him, or maybe even give him a bite of ice cream on a spoon. This time, I muttered to myself, "ignore it" and kept on cooking, with my back toward him. It was hard to do, but effective. This is just one example of how the book has helped me change ME and my reactions. It has also helped remind me to give both the teen and the toddler extra positive attention so they won't look for it in obnoxious ways.
This book is about strategies to encourage good behavior with positive reinforcement while ignoring the bad attention-seeking behaviors. The theory is that reacting to attention-seeking & annoying behaviors (tantrums, name calling, breaking toys, etc) actually reinforces them by giving the child the satisfaction of getting a rise out of the adult. This book IS NOT suggesting to leave children unsupervised or even become emotionally unavailable to them. I thought the book was well written with numerous examples throughout each chapter outlining a specific strategy. I’ve been able to employ these strategies and for the most part, the tactic seems to work.
I purchased this book to get some general advice on parenting. But I was amazed at how many of the parenting scenarios/situations were exactly what my family experiences. I felt like the book was talking about us.I was encouraged to learn many parents experience the same behavioral challenges from their kids as we do. But now feel more confident in how to best handle those situations moving forward.Less blow ups. Less stress. And more understanding.I must admit, using the Ignore it! strategy is not always easy. But having implemented it over the last few weeks, there is definite progress being made. And that’s encouraging! And that is also why I felt inclined to give it 5 stars and write this review.
I liked this book more than the many (many) others that I read (while drinking wine to offset my frustration :). It has good advice coupled with many, many examples. We saw results almost immediately. I find that other books do not provide a lot of different examples which can be limiting in the implementation of the advice. This book is a quick read with good humor. This author also has many helpful and interesting articles available on the internet.
I read this book in a single day and started implementing the technique immediately. IT WORKS. Dr. Pearlman's tone is entirely kind and empathetic, and the book made me understand how my husband and I were unintentionally reinforcing some less-than-ideal behavior in our kids. After only a few days, we are seeing a difference at home - less yelling and more kindness and fun. I just bought two more copies to give as gifts to friends, that's how much I loved this book.
This book was a super quick read and quite funny at times. It was relatable and provided solid examples on how to try a parenting style that I had dabbled in but was implementing incorrectly. I have a child who knows how to push my buttons and I began trying it's techniques as I was reading it. It totally works. I am thrilled that I will now be able to foster a more meaningful relationship with my children and not get caught up in daily nonsense. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with your readers. Have already bought another copy for a friend and plan to keep sharing the wealth.
