Amazon seems to be lumping all different editions together in the reviews so it is impossible to know which edition you are reading about. Had it been clear that THIS printing was awful, i would not have purchased it. This has a brown cover with a picture of London on it. It was about $3. I received it today, and it is obviously a cheap home print job--thin, barely laminated cover, weird size (about 6x8"), very thin (entire book crammed into 45 pages). I bought it for first of three kids to read for school; this is not something I want to keep on my bookshelves for a while. It's a classic; I want a halfway decent copy. Child will continue to read it on free Kindle edition for now, and I'm ordering a new copy from a "known" publisher. Don't buy this one--

Beware...bought this because my 6th grader has to read it for school, thought he would enjoy an illustrated version. The issues...this book looks home made and for some strange reason the illustrations are all photos of artwork of naked ladies...not pictures from the story about DOGS!!!! The font for the story is literally all different sizes and and the layout is crazy. Really really surprised and disappointed!

While many have tried, no one has come close to matching author Jack London’s ability to portray the wild, untamed Yukon. One of his best-known stories, Call of the Wild, first serialized in magazine form and in 1906 published as a short novel, tells the story of Buck, a muscular dog stolen from his home in Santa Clara Valley, California and sold as a sled dog in Canada’s Yukon territory during the gold rush of the 1890s.Torn from his civilized surroundings, Buck taps into his wild origins to become one of the most feared sled dogs in the territory, wresting leadership from a violent enemy, and learning to deal with humans, kind and unkind, all the while drifting back to his beginnings, a creature of the wild, surviving on his strength and cunning. While this story is told primarily from the dog’s point of view, it also shows humans and their relationships; with each other, with the animals they can use but not tame, and with the unremitting, merciless wilderness. If you’ve never read Jack London before, Call of the Wild is a good place to get your first taste of an author who knows how to take nature and those who would vainly try to tame it, and portray it in a way that makes you feel the bite of the wind-blown snow and the oppressive weight of the darkness that surrounds a campfire at night. You can hear the mournful howl of the wolves and the wail of the wind. And, in so doing, you will get a sense of man’s place in a universe that we can never fully comprehend—and, through the eyes of a dog, you will lean what it is to be human.

Beautiful story of a dog, Buck, who is a St. Bernard from his father's side a sheep dog from his mother's. Throughout the story Buck proves that he is a dog like no other. His grit and tenacity see him sail through the worst treatment that can be wrought by man on animal. (Warning:If you have a pet or if you are an animal lover it might prove extremely challenging to sail through many parts of the book). Just when Buck finally finds a master who he dearly loves and is loved, he hears a call, the 'call of the wild'. He knows that he cannot ignore the call. This is a slim volume, can perhaps be read in one sitting if you have some time. I had not imagined that such a book would keep me riveted, for it is not about mystery, suspense, adventure or action. It is about a dog! No wonder this is a classic.(if you plan to read the book, feel free to skip the rest of this below)The Alaska Gold Rush of late 19th century (1896 or so) attracted something like 100,000 prospectors, mostly from the San Francisco/Seattle areas to the Yukon region.Well cared, healthy, powerful dogs attracted unheard of premiums. This prompted a greedy gardener to kidnap his employer's dog and sell it off to work the sleds. While being transported from sunny Santa Clara Valley, Buck changes many cruel hands, however his last tormentor is particularly vile. He clubs Buck to pulp leaving him clinging to life. The experience infuses a steely character in Buck. While anything could break his body, nothing could break his spirit.Buck has to fight many competitors to finally establish supremacy of the pack. His masters recognize his remarkable character and reward him by according him the pride of place, to lead the pack. Demands of transportation make the dogs overworked, underfed and exploited, Buck included. He, like the rest of his pack is reduced to skin and bone. He is sold to ignorant but cruel masters who continue the exploitation, but Buck would have none of it. His greatness is recognized by a camper who adopts him and then begins Buck's wonderful life. He regains everything he had lost and seems even more virile and strong than the best of past times. Buck serves his master, even helping him add to his fortunes. When everything seems hunky dory, something tells Buck his place is in the wild. When the call of the wild is received it does not go unheeded.Meanwhile his master and associates are killed by native Indians.Trust Buck to take revenge and kill them all, establishing his superiority over even man himself. After this inflection point and after having lost his beloved master, Buck is even more convinced that his place is in the Wild and he returns to it, as if he had belonged there all the time.

Part dog and part wolf, White Fang is, along with his mother Kiche, the sole survivor of his pack. When he and Kiche are taken in by an Indian tribe, White Fang begins a journey from Wild to Domesticated that is long, arduous, and painful.White Fang by Jack London is a companion to London’s Call of the Wild, told mostly from the animal’s point of view. This reissue of a London classic has some editorial revisions, according to the publishers, but retains the author’s voice and ability to portray the untamed frontier of his day. For a reader who wants to be introduced, or as in my case, reintroduced, to a classical American literary figure, this book is an excellent jumping off point. The characters, though animal, are portrayed in terms that humans can understand, but without ‘humanizing’ them. This book shows why Jack London was one of the most regarded authors of his time. I received a free copy of this book, and without hesitation, give it five stars.

This an outstanding bit of thought-provoking research .. and common sense. The best part of this book is the step by step analysis ofwhy humans are (probably) from Mars as Brinsley LePoer Trench suggested in Skygods, but Ellis enumerates many (53) of ourphysical incompatibilities which he is right, should not be there IFwe evolved on Earth... our DNA and adaptation would have been assured by evolving within the sometimes antagonistic environment in which we live. And the key to possible Martian origin is that our circadian rhythm (body clocks) are naturally set for a 25-hur day -- which matches that of Mars. Ellis says we may have come from somewhere else, but Man as he is today is mal-adapted to Earth's environment. In a similar way, Hegland addresses the same issue in Virtual Disneyland of the Gods and lists Ellis' points and shows how Brinsley LePoer Trench also supports the Mars hypothesis. Hegland then trashes Vertical Evolution and shows why Horizontal Evolution is the answer, he also, as does Ellis, looks at Panspermia. Hegland also examines many anomalies on Earth to round out the look at Man and Earth...origin and future -- he goes into the Hybrids and Missing people -- all in all picking up where Fort and Keel left off -- with answers. Both are fascinating books.

This book has a lot of ideas of why we can't come from this planet but a lot of his assumptions are proven incorrect. He talks about how we don't get enough calcium. Research shows that we actually get too much calcium and that causes health problems. He also talks about we don't like the natural food here on earth, well that's because we has been programed to like processed junk food. I personally feel better eating a more natural diet of fruits and vegetables. This book is filled with childish arguments that are just putting down humans and half of it doesn't make any sense. The truth is nobody knows where we came from, and everyone has made up stories of where they think we came from.

thinking outside the box with real discussion

Eliis Silver's book makes you think about mankind and where we came from. All of his data is supported by facts. His hypothesis' are spot on. One must be open to the many possibilities of where we came from and how we came to being. I'm fascinated and you will too. Not a mainstream conservative view. He covers a myriad of topics that suggest humans are not solely from this planet. 5 stars.

Just started reading it and I like it phatpaulie says buy buy it great book to read on plane

This books brings up some pretty interesting points & makes the reader delve deep into themselves!

Parks is a significant talent. Such a picture he paints with his pitch perfect Glasgow dialog. His protagonist Harry McCoy is quick-witted, clever, imperfect, vulnerable and wonderfully engaging. And McCoy’s running buddy named – wait for it – Watson is equally entertaining. Parks is giving us inventive and profound Noir fiction. It’s violent. It’s noir. It’s addictive. It’s wonderful stuff.

This is well paced and has some great characters that you can understand and get involved with. The descriptions of Glasgow in the 70’s make you feel like you’re there and pacing is fast with some nice twists - some believeable, some not so much. All in all, a very entertaining book. The only complaint is the repetitive use of the word wee. It was a quaint touch at first, but maybe another term here or there?

February’s Son is the second book in the Harry McCoy series by British author, Alan Parks. It’s February 1973 and Harry is just back at the Glasgow Police Force after a three-week break that included compulsory visits to the Police psychologist. But straight off, DCI Murray has him at a bloody and brutal murder scene: a football star has been drugged and mutilated and left on the roof of a building under construction. The victim’s prospective father-in-law, a Glasgow crime figure, is certain it has been done by the strong arm he used to employ, but this dangerous man has gone into hiding. The fiancée seems more annoyed than in grief, and quite certain she is in no danger herself. But more disfigured bodies turn up (nasty words carved in flesh and Mandrax seem to be a common feature), and the murderer proves difficult to track down, managing to slip away from Police more than once.Harry, meanwhile, is distracted by the suicide death, in a chapel, of a destitute alcoholic. Harry seems to have a special rapport with Glasgow’s homeless, but this time, there’s something more, and soon he’s on a violent revenge mission with his criminal pal, Stevie Cooper. But Harry’s a cop: is this a line he’s crossing?Against the background of a battle for control of Glasgow’s criminal elements, this fast-paced thriller includes paedophiles, lobotomies, and a vicious psychopath, as it races towards a nail-biting climax. Several characters require stitches on multiple occasions. Harry still indulges heavily in alcohol, tobacco and drugs, and barely hesitates before using violence, but he does seem to be saving intimacies for Susan. And does his chosen career really fit well with a blood phobia? There is some good detective work achieved and young Wattie does something quite heroic. While there are no major spoilers for the first book in the series, Bloody January, and this one can stand alone, the first book does give some useful background on the characters and their history. Again, the prolific use of expletives may offend some readers, but there’s a bit of black humour in the banter. Excellent Scottish Noir. This unbiased review is from an uncorrected proof copy provided by Allen & Unwin

Bloody January from Alan Parks was one of my favourite books of 2018 and I was curious to see if the second in a planned 12 book series measured up. I'm happy to report it does.70s Glasgow, a murdered professional footballer - not just murdered but mutilated into the bargain and one with links to a heavy hitter criminal boss, Jake Scobie. Celtic player Charlie Jackson was engaged to Scobie's daughter and it looks like one of Scobie's close confidants and enforcers, Kevin Connolly has done the deed. Apparently Connolly had a thing for Elaine Scobie.Simples then - find Connolly and close the case. If only.Mental illness, a struck off doctor with a penchant for conducting lobotomies, unrequited love, a falling out of criminals, a picture in a paper, a suicide, a terminal illness, an obstructive lawyer, ghosts from the past, an escalation, a river rescue, family friction, an insider takeover (?), manipulation and scheming, more victims, a peeping Tom act, a hotel raid, a disturbing look inside a diseased mind, a kicking with the promise of more, some plans for retribution, a childhood bond, a busy reporter, a poorly mother, dabbling with drugs, revenge goes awry, an escalation, a funeral, a plan of action, a few bevvies, a few pies and some tension between old friends, shooting for the stars, a lucky escape, a guilty conscience and a tearful confession, and a helluva lot more going on here.Harsh, brutal, graphic and enlightening. There's a lot of pain in this book and a lot of ghosts that get exorcised, particularly for our main character, Harry McCoy in a story strand that runs tangentially to our main aim of capturing our very obvious villain, Kevin Connolly. All the bits and bobs of the tale overlap and entwine and eventually get wrapped up with consummate skill and very satisfactorily too.I loved the main character Harry. Parks makes us care about him and we feel his pain and the suffering the weight of his memories causes him. His casual drug use and over indulgence on occassions with alcohol is understandable and cathartic for him in many respects. That he is an honest copper mostly, is a testament to his strength and resilience. I do like the loyalty to and the interactions with childhood friend and up-and-coming major villain Stevie Cooper. I enjoy his banter with young Wattie and their partnership with Wattie feeding off the old pro McCoy and having his eyes opened to the sights and perils of big city Glasgow. I like the fact McCoy has a boss, Murray who has his back.Looking forward to book three, whenever that drops. 2020 - hurry up!4.5 from 5Read in February, 2019Published - 2019Page count - 368Source - review copy from publisher CanongateFormat - paperback

The photography is crisp and clear, and the poses are varied and fun to draw. These books are superb value for money. A wonderful resource for anyone-from hobbyists to pros-wanting to sharpen their life drawing skills. I buy every book sight unseen the day they come out.

Great for quick sketches and gesture drawings. I thought the lighting on the model was very good. She's a very attractive model.

Stop pandering for reviews. I'm really tired of getting spammed for reviews before ive even finished reading a book. Just awful

A great pose. Working in the Kindle e-reader took a bit of figuring out at first but the photos are super (as usual) with their fine resolution. Hair and hairline show so clearly.

Censuring the cover picture is childish. The pictures in the ebook are tiny and of terrible resoluions as when you zoom them they loose all integrity.

High quality models. Excellent for artists who need figure poses!

From the Inside Flap

a Ladover Hasid who keeps kosher, prays three times a day and believes in the Ribbono Shel Olom, the Master of the Universe. Asher Lev is an artist who is compulsively driven to render the world he sees and feels even when it leads him to blasphemy. In this stirring and often visionary novel, Chaim Potok traces AsherÂ’s passage between these two identities, the one consecrated to God, the other subject only to the imagination.Asher Lev grows up in a cloistered Hasidic community in postwar Brooklyn, a world suffused by ritual and revolving around a charismatic Rebbe. But in time his gift threatens to estrange him from that world and the parents he adores. As it follows his struggle, My Name Is Asher Lev becomes a luminous portrait of the artist, by turns heartbreaking and exultant, a modern classic.

I first read “My Name is Asher Lev” 30 years ago in secondary school as part of a nominated text for study. Reading it a second time, it is amazing to what degree the phrases, characterisations and vivid scenes remain with me. You don’t read “My Name is Asher Lev”, you live it. Although it is set in the orthodox world of the Hasidic Jew, this is of secondary importance and functions merely as a plot device in creating tension. For it is not a novel about religion but about the human condition; we share the journey of Asher Lev and his birth as an artist. From his early years as a child to his young manhood, we play witnesses to eyes which take in this world and the hands which paint them. The novel is full of beautiful language and imagery. Much like an enthusiastic song on Shabbos, the novel repeats and layers images, dialogue and emotional themes which resonate and convey a strong sense of both plot and metaphor. The birth of an artist is never easy, and as Asher experiences, he is challenged as much by his growth as a painter as he is by the conflict it brings it with his religion and family. The book is filled with memorable characters who you quickly grow to know intimately, from Asher’s childhood friend Yudel Krinksy to his painting teacher Jacob Kahn, to the all knowing and wise Rabbi. Potok draws the reader in, providing a fascinating insight into the Hasidic world which Asher lives in with its rituals, its restraints and joys. It is a book deep on characterisation and imagery, driven by Asher’s powerful imagination and his struggle to distil the world around him into meaningful art. Whether it is his dreams about his mythic ancestor, watching rain fall on the Parkway outside of his apartment, or the anguish he sees on his mother’s face over the constant travelling of her husband, Asher’s artistic eye and his need to transmute his inner life onto canvass captures it all. It is a beautifully written book, which as this reader has found, transcends time and remains not only in the mind, but the soul for many a year, an inspiring echo which the master of the universe would surely appreciate.

I loved this book. It was raw, full of emotion, and explored a culture that's rarely in fiction. As a Reform Jew, Asher's Hasidic Judaism was both familiar and unfamiliar to me, and I really enjoyed learning about it. I also learned an awful lot about art and Russian-Jewish culture. It's a novel without a definite "resolution", but a "happy ending" would feel inauthentic to this novel, which is so true to life while providing elements of the fantastical in Asher's mind and art. Overall, this is not a light read by any means, but one that is very much worthwhile.

I loved this book that I read years ago in my youth. This is the classic story coming of age story, also of the child of an immigrant being more American in ways and view point but so much more. The description in first person of not only a gift for art but an irresistible drive and compulsion was amazing to read. Then there was the opportunity for the reader to become immersed in the Hasidic orthodox Jewish culture to truly understand what life there is like. Also the development of an artist through training with a master. Easy to read and so compelling. I can't wait to read the sequel that I just learned about and may go back and reread his most famous book The Chosen that I read long ago in my youth. I selected this book after seeing the play of the same name recently in Hollywood. The gut-wrenching conflict among this small family and the application to the larger society was so profound, I wanted to reread the book which I could not remember. As usual with books in comparison to movies or play, they are so much richer and have the space to tell the story fully fleshed out. I loved this book and highly recommend it.

My Name Is Asher Lev is another powerful Potok novel about ‘core conflict’ between the artistic spiritual voice inside a man’s soul, and the Hasidic culture in which he grows up and in which he is so tutored by the memory of his legendary ancestor, as well as by the lives led by his grandfather and father.

This is a wonderful book ... this is not your run-of-the-mill TV Series book with trivia and lots of facts, it is a very well written work that is an enjoyable read ... I really like the writer's style ... he presents not only the factual aspects of this classic show but concentrates on the human spirit and how each cast member, writer and producer were in sync with the philosophy of creating a community of memorable characters who were successful in conveying a loving community where no matter the challenges managed to preserve the Mayberry essence ...I like the insights into the thinking of all involved ... how they respected and enjoyed each other ... many of these insights will show why such a special outcome was achieved from a simple comedy format and a 30 minute show each week ...As a long time fan, I already knew many of the facts but it was edifying to delve into them again with the additional insights provided ...I highly recommend this book if you wish to understand how this TV series became such a special offering that continues to endure the test of time ... I have seen every episode in the first 5 seasons more than a dozen times each and yet I still enjoy them just as much or more than the first viewing ... this is a testament to something that goes well beyond a simple show because there is a sort of magic and chemistry that came together in a way that we may never again see ... the author does a marvelous job of revealing the important aspects of these individual elements that helped make it possible, at least for this one period of time in television history ...I couldn't put it down ... if you are a fan of the series, you won't be disappointed ... even if you are a casual fan there is much here that should make you smile and enjoy a little bit of Mayberry hospitality for a few hours ...

This book by Richard Kelly is written well overall. I think the points he made were good but I wish he had more detail with some events, particularly what truly happened with 'Warren' the deputy after Barney who didn't make it. I just felt that the book seemed very short. It has 286 pages but beginning on page 142 he begins talking about 'Mayberry in the 1980s' which is not about the actual behind-the-scenes information on the show anymore. He then includes a script for the episode 'The Sermon for Today' and then an unused script after that called 'The Wandering Minstrel'. After that is a summary of each episode. So I did feel somewhat cheated because only half of the book contains real information about the show itself. Also it is a very outdated book (Not the author's fault of course) that was written originally in 1981 and has a re-printing of 1989. But he writes how there will probably never be a Mayberry reunion movie, which all fans of the show know did happen. It's also before 'Matlock' which could have been very interesting to read about his views of how Griffith brought some Mayberry folks into that show at times including Don Knotts. But it is what it is. I enjoyed reading what was written but was just overall feeling that there could have been a lot more to read about the show than was there. Too bad it's not updated.

This is the book I have been searching for to answer those unanswered questions. I wondered what happened to the first Floyd (an older gentleman), why Ellie abruptly left after the first season, why Don Knotts left after season Five, etc... This book explains what happened behind-the-scenes.The book is broken down into sections: The Production, Developing a Cast, Changes in the Cast, Going Out A Winner, and more. It offers up the thoughts of the producers, directors, and cast members including quotes from Andy Griffith and Don Knotts on their take of a situation. It's an informative, easy read that focuses on the development and inner workings. It brings about a certain personal closeness between the reader and cast.If you're looking for a book strictly centered on the on-screen characters, check out The Andy Griffith Show by Ken Beck and Jim Clark. You'll find out the Floyd(the on-screen character) is married, has a dog named Sam, a son and so on. Everything you wanted to know about the on-screen folks is in that book. However, if you want to know about the real folks and what went on behind-the-scenes, The Andy Griffith Show by Richard Kelly is the book for you.

I bought this as a gift for someone who loves Andy and the gang. It seems to be a great source of information about the show and I'm sure it will be appreciated!

it was well-written and gave a good insight into the personalities of the actors. i thoroughly enjoyed every chapter of this book.

Mayberry fans use phrases from the Andy Griffith Show on an everyday basis, at least the ones I know. Having The Andy Griffith Show book or books are a must for any fan of the show. Lots of luck to you and yours!

My son loves this book!

Excellent source of factual background, as well as stories and anecdotes from the creation of one of the best weekly episodic series. I suggest you read it first, then over time pick it up and re-read short sections -- they will all make you smile.

Cam nicely packaged and in time for class. Pretty straight forward when it comes to school books, I was so happy with the price point as well.

Old out dated and boring...I expected more than what it offered, I was looking for a guideline of do's and dont's for training my servers.

👌🏼

Very knowledgeable

As a curriculum designer and training manager, I highly recommend Restaurant Service Basics. It is an excellent training tool for hospitality programs, inhouse restaurant training program as well as the individual wanting to seek restaurant employment. Every aspect of restaurant service is covered thoroughly. All restaurants should have a copy on the shelf as a basic reference for those infrequently encountered situations. This valuable resource has been published for a number of years and regular new editions keep the content fresh and current.

I bought this book based on the editorial and customer review. Service basics is an overstatement. Do not buy this book unless you have never dined in a restaurant. It will not help you at all if you know anything about the business. The book is filled with helpful gems like "The course that is usually served first is the appetizer. The appetizer is a food item served before the meal..." Wow thanks! What's a Napkin? The computerized service system is at least 10 years behind industry standards and serving from the left with the left hand is not the way it is always done. Stick with the Culinary Arts Institutes "Remarkable Service" It is by far the best there is.

The book explains how a restaurant is operated thoroughly. The book has pictures to allow easy comprehension. The roles of the entire team from Owner to buss, they're all in there. Explains everyone's task and gives projects to practice on to get a first hand experience. I recommend this book to all business owners and managers. Great book even for waiter/waitress wanting to improve their service.
