This book is a compelling read which gives an insight into Saudi culture. Starting with a compelling love story between the author and a Bin Laden brother, it chronicles the clash between the Swiss-born author and her Saudi husband's culture. The book is now dated and I longed for an update. This is not great literature and may well show signs of being ghostwritten, but it is worth a read.

I love the book. It gives a great deal of information on how Saudis live and believe. It is hard to believe how the Saudis (the rich ones) could go off to other countries and behave in the ways opposite to the strict ways in which they were taught to believe.It took a lot of courage for Carmen Bin Ladin to teach her daughters in the way she did, especially while she had to live within the family. Her stubborness in not wanting her girls to grow up and live like Saudi women was commendable. I kept worrying that she would lose her children if she decided to leave Saudi Arabia.This is a hard book to put down.

This is a memoir of Carmen Bin Ladin's life as a child growing up in Switzerland; of later meeting her husband Yeslam Bin Ladin whilst a student in Geneva; of then living in Jeddah amongst the Bin Ladins; and finally to her painful divorce.Carmen was born of a Swiss father and an Iranian mother. It was not accepted in Iran for a Muslim girl to marry a Christian foreigner, so her mother had to leave Iran to escape her family's harsh criticisms. But the marriage did not last long, and her mother could not return back to Iran in fear of being looked upon as a divorced woman, a curse in Iranian society.After the divorce, Carmen and her mother remained in Switzerland. It was in Geneva that Carmen first met her husband to be, Yeslam Bin Ladin. She described him as being quiet, well dressed, and smart (later in life he used to compete with other princes on whom dressed better). Carmen soon started dating Yeslam, and humorously, she ends up getting married in a car in a parking lot in Saudi Arabia. Apparently, she was not allowed to enter the ministry building to sign the marriage papers, so the papers were brought to her whilst she sat waiting in the car. Women in Saudi Arabia are not allowed to mix with men, and therefore cannot enter buildings were men work. Getting married in a car was the first of the many culture shocks Carmen was to experience.Carmen relates her life as the wife of a Bin Ladin. Mohammad Bin Ladin, the father of the Bin Ladin clan, had over 50 children and countless wives whom he kept at his compound at Kilo 7 in Jeddah. I think Kilo 7 refers to the Mecca Road, 7 being seven kilometers away from Jeddah, but someone will have to check me on that.It is quite interesting that Mohammad Bin Laden would choose to keep all his wives together in one compound. In Islam, a man can have 4 wives at the same time. Mohammad Bin Laden therefore had to divorce a wife each time he wanted to remarry in order not to exceed the allowed quota of 4 wives. As long as one of his divorced wives did not remarry, she was allowed to stay in the compound together with her kids. It was even rumored that there was a competition going on between King Abdul-Aziz of Saudi Arabia and Mohammad Bin Ladin on who will have more children. King Abdul-Aziz won, with over 60 children and many more wives.Living at the Bin Ladin compound was hard for Carmen. She couldn't go shopping for she was prohibited from mixing with men. Whenever she needed something, such as a bathing suit, she had to send her driver. Eventually Safeway opened in Jeddah, and Carmen was able to go grocery shopping. She relates one instance where a group of British and American expats were all gathering at the chocolate aisle and filling their trolleys with chocolate boxes. Carmen later realized that the chocolates contained liqueur. Alcohol is prohibited in Saudi Arabia, but somehow the liqueur chocolates must have slipped by the customs officials.Carmen's life was a reasonably happy one in the beginning. She describes her relationships with the other Bin Ladin wives; the relationship of her husband with his brothers; and of course, she talks about Osama Bin Ladin.Apparently, Osama was a quiet man and very pious. Unlike his brothers who at first lived a lavish life and were known for their promiscuity and for being playboys, Osama never embraced the western liberal way of life. Carmen says that rumors of him having been a playboy in his younger days are just false. Even pictures allegedly showing him partying in Europe are not of him, but of his brothers who resemble him somewhat. Interestingly, she says that his brothers do not believe that he could have been capable of masterminding the 9/11 attacks on the United States.Since the Bin Ladin family was the only family given exclusive rights to renovate the two holy sites, Mecca and Medina, the family was given preferential treatment. For example, if a policeman or a member of the religious police stopped one of the Bin Ladins, all they had to say was Bin Ladin, and they were quickly released or given right of way. No one asked for their IDs. This however was not good policy, for it allowed a group of Islamists, hidden in Bin Ladin trucks (which were never searched), to attack and seize the holy Mosque in Mecca in 1979. In fact, one of the Bin Ladin brothers was arrested as a suspect in the attack, but was soon released because he was a Bin Ladin.When Mohammad Bin Ladin died in a plane crash he was piloting, the eldest son was still in his twenties. The king therefore appointed a trustee to run the family fortune. Eventually, as the brothers grew up, they took full control of the family business. According to Carmen, her husband Yeslam was the smartest of the brothers, and this gave rise to envy and jealousy. His brothers frequently downplayed his decisions, and publicly offended him. They also took credit for many of his savvy deals that added to his family's wealth and fame. Eventually, Yeslam quit his family business, was given 300 million dollars as his share of the family wealth, and moved to Switzerland. However, his brothers, eventually recognizing his value to the family business, asked him to return.Carmen relates how she longed to travel outside Saudi Arabia, and how she enjoyed her freedom during her trips to Switzerland and the United States. One thing I liked about Carmen is that she is a bibliophile. She piled books on her travels to read while literally imprisoned in the Bin Ladin compound in Jeddah. She read all subjects, from philosophy to politics.Carmen describes the state of mind of the Saudi Royals during the downfall of the Shah of Iran, and the rise of the Ayatollah Khomeini. Before the Ayatollah, Saudi Arabia was moving in the right direction, becoming more liberal and westernized. However, after the Iranian revolution, with fear of it spilling to Saudi Arabia, religious fanatics gained power and turned the country into a strict religious monarchy, very much like during the Taliban in Afghanistan. Women were not allowed to drive; had to be completely covered; were discouraged of going to school; were discouraged to go in public places; were forbidden from working; were not allowed to join any health clubs or do any sports; and were raised to be subservient to their future husbands. The country suddenly moved hundreds of years backwards! Carmen, who had high hopes of living in Jeddah, had her hopes collapse. Her life was becoming unbearable in Jeddah. She longed to go back to Switzerland.Trouble between her and her husband first started during her third pregnancy. Her husband did not want the baby, and Carmen eventually had an abortion. She describes the psychological pain she had to endure after the abortion.When Carmen was pregnant again, her husband once more asked her to have an abortion. This time she refused, and she knew that it would be over between them. To make matters worse, she learnt that her husband was cheating on her, and she even caught him leaving one of his mistress's homes in the middle of the morning.Carmen gives us a lot of insight into the life of her husband Yeslam. Apparently, later in his life, he acted strange, was often depressed, and complained of imaginary illnesses. He also had a fear of flying, and refused to fly alone. Like his father, his brother Salem also died while piloting his own aircraft in Texas.I did not like the last chapter which talked about the Bin Ladins. The chapter seemed more like an attack on the Bin Ladin family, as if Carmen wanted to get back at her ex-husband. She says that the Bin Ladin family should make their secret dealings open to public scrutiny, and that their present relation with Osama should be revealed. These statements somewhat weakened her book. If she knows something we don't she should just tell us, or better still, let the CIA know. I am sure she is genuine in her last chapter (chapter 19, conclusion), but I think it is more personal and revengeful than anything else. By the way, an additional chapter was added in later editions. The book I read had the added chapter included.Overall, this is a good read for those who want to know about Saudi society in the 70s, 80s, and early 90s, and especially those wanting to learn about the Bin Ladin family. The reader should note that since King Abdullah gained the throne, Saudi Arabia has been moving forward at a tremendous speed, and the country is becoming more open, tolerant, and westernized. And kudos, women now outsmart the guys. Well done!

"This book had me spellbound from beginning to the end. I loved this book because it sparked my curiosities and gave me the in-depth look inside the daily routines and extremely sheltered lives of women in Saudi Arabia. What drew my attention to this book was that it entailed the personal life experiences of Carmen Bin Ladin, while being married at the time to her now ex-husband, Yeslam Bin Ladin and brother of Osama Bin Ladin. What a tangled web poor Carmen fell into and was trapped for many years while married to Yeslam. In her book, Carmen describes the many layers of the required codes of conduct, both inside her home in the kingdom and outside in public, and describes the beliefs and interactions she had with the other women of the Bin Ladin clan. The Saudi Arabian lifestyle became difficult for Carmen to conform to and accept, in every aspect of her life as a wife, mother, and daughter-in-law in Saudi Arabia. Carmen, the author, describes in her book how her freedom to make her own decisions and to voice her own opinions became a privilege she desperately needed to recover, which she lost in Saudi Arabia. Her human rights of freedom became a valuable necessity for the happiness of herself and her daughters. I admire Carmen for having the strength to stay true to herself, not change her beliefs to please her husband and his family. She didn't allow her young daughters to accept the Saudi lifestyle and the nightmares she had endured. Therefore, she followed her heart and instincts by divorcing her husband Yeslam and attained full custody of her daughters. It was heartbreaking that Yeslam turned his back on his own children and cut them off financially and denied he was the father. To make matters worst, Yeslam's side of the family also turned their backs to Carmen and her daughters. This book served as an educational tool for me, because it taught me that not everything that sparkles is gold, and to be cautious of who you open your heart to because you can end up with a wolf in sheeps clothing".

I enjoyed reading this book and could relate to so much of it because I am an American living in the Middle East. I think the average reader would find it interesting, but seeing the culture up close and personal makes it more relatable. She speaks with such candor about the things that she experienced and lived with and lived thru. She was always respectful of the members of the Bin Laden family when she addressed them in the book. Never trying to belittle or demean them but share a view into their life. She just hit so many nails on the head about the way women live and are treated who are a part of this culture. I feel for her and her daughters because though they are no longer tied to the Bin Laden family legally, because of the girls birth right, they will always be Bin Ladens and the world will forever associate them to their uncle Osama and his world. Good easy read!

I got a copy of this to use with my children in our homeschool. I am currently previewing the book and will be adding it to our curriculum schedule next year. I am learning a lot myself from this book. You’re never too old to learn. I would highly recommend this book to other students and homeschooling families.

Fun and engaging for all Math students! The book is well organized with a great selection of examples to work through. I can’t put this book down. This is great resource for giving a challenge to my advanced math class. The variety of types of logic is great exercise for the mind, using right and left brain together.The author is connected to his readers and available for questions and comments. He is invested in helping his “students” to learn and grow.I highly recommend this book!

I purchased this product for my daughter to use during the summer. While looking through it I fell in love as when I was in 8th grade my math teacher would give us logic problems for bonus points. The book is easy to follow and sectioned well. I wish elementary school math books were as easy to follow to teach the parents the new ways of +-×÷.The linked FB page is a bonus add on in my opinion. I think it will give another resource if a topic becomes too challenging.

Excellent book as an introduction to logic, good puzzle challenge for adults and a learning tool for kids, to push their reasoning boundaries. Congrats.

I really liked that there were different types of problems which each give the mind a good workout. The problems are really fun and interesting and require a lot of critical thinking. I purchased this for my daughter who got hooked into and enjoys solving them. Overall the book is awesome! The author also has a facebook page which includes daily problems which are similar in the book. After you solve them you can comment on your answer.

Some of the tasks a bit hard for my 9-yo, however it gives us an opportunity to discuss and brainstorm the solution. Honestly it’s a good mental exercise for me too

I wanted to be that "affectionate elderly couple walking arm in arm", especially in our beloved Door County where we vacation every summer, but it is not to be. It helps me to focus on my "future hope" and that this life is not the end. Thank you, Dee, for helping me to see more clearly The God of all Comfort.

This is hands' down the best book i have ever read on the topic of navigating tremendous personal pain and the healing-grief that follows. Her story is terribly personal and heart breaking. One can feel the tremendous love conveyed from the husband/wife relationship: that in itself was so very inspiring.... so rare to find these days. Dee speaks with tremendous respect and gut-wrenching honesty. Her ability to take such a personal sadness and write about it, in order to show others experiencing the same how the Holy Spirit met her in her in this dark place of pain is like a soothing ointment on a hemorrhaging heart. She outlines how saturating her soul and mind with the old hymns and Psalms spoke Truth into her hurts. I walked away from reading this feeling as if i had been let in on something Holy. We have bought copies of this book for many that are dear to us. This is an wonderful reference for medical professionals as those that deal with the sensitive topic of death on a regular basis. Thank you, Dee, for being so real and transparent, as always.

Looking to grow closer to God for a number of specific reasons. This woman's heartfelt account of the days and years following the tragic loss of the love of her life was tender and gentle. Very uplifting - yet left me drained at times and wet with with tears. The references to the psalms were exceptionally helpful.Overall, a wonderful read for anyone looking to find a way closer to God, especially after the untimely loss of a loved one.

This was one of the best books I've read in my search to find the comfort of God after losing my husband. It will show you that we all have the same feelings, thoughts, fears, etc. There was soooo much in this book that could have been my own words. I cried a river while reading it, but found it to be extremely helpful.

I was very much helped by her experiences of the Lord. She was very open about how the Lord took her through the difficult times by the Word. She related how the Old Testament saints and psalmists went through the same kind of sufferings because God loved them and wanted them to come into a deeper knowledge of Him and and a deeper love for Him. God loves us very much.

Excellent book, well written. I am doing the Bible study taken from this book, so having the "full story" has been important and helpful. Having the book on my kindle is even better.

As would be expected, this is an excellent collection of stories by the author of "Rashomon"; however, prospective buyers ought to be aware that this is a reissue of an older collection issued by Liveright entitled "Exotic Japanese Stories".

I'll admit some of these aren't prime examples of the short story as a whole. However, many of them are which is saying something; and even when they're not the writing is so good they're still worthwhile reading. The things he mentions as one liners without any further explanation or exploration are better than many things people construct whole stories around. (You know who I'm talking about.) He has the sort of easiness with his writing that make short stories really captivating. The different eras and themes he covers are incredible. The perspective he gives in his writing is nothing short of exemplary if you are willing to try to understand his characters half as well as he has constructed them. Like a Japanese Chekhov but more dexterous. This is probably rambling too much, but the book is a truthful look at a society and you should read it.My only complaint is the last story. It drags a little and is unfinished. Still 5 stars.

If you've read your Japanese Lit., you'll know that the time this author was active was one of great political and intellectual tumult.At the time the Japanese were wrestling with Western rationalism, technologies, politics and all other manner of East meets West perplexities. These conflicts were writ large upon the pages of written word and the stories/styles of story-telling from the period tend to have a certain texture that is familiar once one has read two or three authors of the time.This partly due to the fact that the authors are barely able to escape their pedantic tendencies as they set out to make their points through fiction; another part is, I suspect, that the art of story-telling was undergoing a transition that was directly affected by the introduction of Western ideas onto Eastern methods.This collection of stories makes for a surprisingly heavy labor of love. It is a book I started at home and took with me on a transcontinental aeroplane journey in the hope that it would make good in-flight fodder. I'm not sure what it says that I was unable to finish the book on either leg of the trip when I normally am finished with a book of this length in the allotted time.Let us say that this book is decidedly not a page-turner. It has its fascinations, to be sure, but I found myself both unwilling to skip parts of it and unwilling to read them. While I do like some of the author's ideas, I struggle with the language. This is doubtless partly the fault of the translator, whose rather plodding preface presages the difficult literary journey to come. It is also partly due to the style of this author's writing which likely does not lend itself well to a western translation.I recommend this book only because it has some stories in it that one should like to read; although I wonder if I will ever get to them all.

Six years ago, the man I most trusted with my health said to me, “You should probably become a vegan.”   Not exactly the words I’d wanted to hear, and certainly not what I was expecting. But I’d asked Sid Baker, my doctor of thirty years, what he recommended, given that he’d just told me that at age 57, I had developed the pre-diabetic, pre-heart-disease symptoms typical of a middle-aged man who’d spent his life eating without discipline.   He’d laid out the depressing facts for me: “Your blood numbers have always been fine but now they’re not. You weigh 40 pounds more than you should. You’re complaining of sleep apnea. You’re talking about knee surgery, which is a direct result of your being overweight. Your cholesterol, which has always been normal up until now, isn’t. Same with your blood sugar; it’s moved into the danger zone.” A more conventional doc would’ve simply put me on a drug like Lipitor, and maybe a low-fat diet. But Lipitor, one of the statin drugs that lowers cholesterol, is a permanent drug: Once you start taking it, you don’t stop. I didn’t like the idea of that. Furthermore, its effectiveness in healthy people has never been established, and it’s also been implicated in memory loss and other cognitive complications; I didn’t like the idea of any of that, either. And at this point, low-fat and low-carbohydrate diets have essentially been discredited: They might help you lose weight, but they’re not effective for maintaining that loss in the long term, and they may even wreak havoc on your system.   But becoming a vegan? A person who eats no animal products at all? Calling that a radical change to my lifestyle was more than a bit of an understatement. Yet it was clear that something had to be done. I asked Sid, “Is a compromise possible? Any other ideas?”   “You’re a smart guy,” he said. “Figure something out.”   I thought about this for a few days, and I recognized that what he was saying made sense. There are no silver bullets, and over the years it’s become increasingly clear—much as none of us wants to hear it—that the most sensible diet for human health and longevity is one that’s lower in animal products and junk food and higher in vegetables, fruits, legumes, and minimally processed grains.   I knew that, and I’m guessing you do, too. Yet the idea of becoming a full-time vegan was neither realistic nor appealing to someone accustomed to eating as widely and as well as I do. Furthermore, I had no interest in becoming an isolated vegan in a world of omnivores and—though I have vegan friends, to be sure—the world of omnivores is where I live. Full time.   Yes. I like vegetables and grains; I love them. I love tofu, too, when prepared well. Even back then, I was eating beans far more frequently than I ever had. But none of this got in the way of my enjoying pork shoulder, pizza, bacon, and burgers. I was not prepared to give up that kind of food. That sounded untenable and, more importantly, unsustainable for more than a couple of weeks.   So the question became: What could I do with the conflict between what was undoubtedly Sid’s very sound advice—“become a vegan”—and my own established, beloved, well-socialized lifestyle?   The answer, to me, was this: I’d become a part-time vegan. And for me, this part-time veganism would follow these simple rules: From the time I woke up in the morning until 6 in the evening, I’d eat a super-strict vegan diet, with no animal products at all.   In fact, I decided to go even beyond that: Until 6 p.m., I’d also forgo hyper-processed food, like white bread, white rice, white pasta, of course all junk food, and alcohol.   At 6 p.m., I’d become a free man, allowing myself to eat whatever I wanted, usually—but not always—in moderation. Some nights, this meant a steak dinner; some nights, it was a blow-out meal at a good restaurant; other nights, dinner was a tunafish sandwich followed by some cookies. It ran, and runs, the gamut.   Whatever happened at dinner, though, the next morning I turned not to bacon and eggs or a bowl of Trix but to oatmeal or fruit or vegetables. For lunch, rice and beans or a salad—or both. Throughout the day I snacked on nuts and more fruit.   I called the diet “vegan before six,” or VB6. And it worked.   A month later, I weighed myself; I’d lost 15 pounds. A month after that, I went to the lab for blood work: Both my cholesterol and my blood sugar levels were down, well into the normal range (my cholesterol had gone from 240 to 180). My apnea was gone; in fact, for the first time in probably thirty years, I was sleeping through the night, not even snoring. Within four months, I’d lost more than 35 pounds and was below 180—less than I’d weighed in thirty years. And the funny thing was, the way I ate in the daytime began to change the way I ate at night.   So why be vegan just until 6 o’clock? Am I suggesting that 6 p.m. is some kind of magical metabolic witching hour? Not at all. Truthfully, the hour itself doesn’t matter much, and if you habitually eat dinner very early, your plan may be VB5—or VB9, if you live in Spain. The point I was making to myself, and that I’m saying to you, is that dinnertime sets you free. Dinnertime, because that’s when you’re likely to want to eat the most, because that’s when you’re most likely to drink (and lose discipline!), because that’s when you’re most likely to combine eating with socializing, an important and even beneficial thing.   But even though the time itself is arbitrary, it has the power to make you stop and think before acting. In fact, the rules are what VB6 has in common with “regular” diets; because anyone can say (and many people do), “Eat sensibly, don’t overeat, increase your consumption of fruits and vegetables, eat less junk and high-calorie, low-nutrition foods.” If it were that easy, there’d be no need for diets. But by telling you “Don’t eat animal products or refined foods during the day, and feel free to eat what you like at night,” VB6 gives you the structure you need to exercise limited but effective discipline in a way that accomplishes all of those things.   During the day you’ll be observant, and eat way more fruits and vegetables than you probably have until now, and virtually none of the foods that we know cause your metabolism to go haywire, putting a downward spiral in motion. In the evening, you’ll still eat more thoughtfully, but won’t necessarily avoid or limit foods you love and can’t imagine eliminating from your diet. Simply put, at 6 o’clock you can put “the diet” on hold—a compromise that offers the benefits of restraint without the hardship of perpetual denial. Even reading this now, six years after I began, it still sounds pretty good to me.   This is not to say that my adapting to VB6 was seamless. I wasn’t exactly “becoming a vegan,” but this new diet was certainly not the way I was used to getting through the day. In 2007, when I first embarked on this plan, I’d been a professional food writer (and eater!) for more than twenty-five years. My diet had become increasingly indulgent and untamed, and my opportunities for eating “well”—that is, lavishly—were near constant. I had few rules and, I thought, little need for them. Like many of us, I ate what tasted good to me.   Even before this conversation with Sid, my thinking about food and eating had begun to change—enough so that his suggestion that I become vegan wasn’t completely out of left field. I knew, for example, that we Americans eat too much junk food and too many animal products. I knew that food was being produced in an increasingly mechanized and unprincipled manner, without taking into account the welfare of consumers—that’s us—or the environment or animals or the people who grew or processed it. And I knew that our health as a country was going down the tubes, and that the Standard American Diet (SAD for short, and it is just that) was at least in part responsible.   The combination of thinking that way and my new way of eating led to profound changes in my life; it changed not only my diet but my work. I didn’t want to become a preacher or even a teacher, but the more I thought about our diet, the more I practiced VB6, the more I recognized that these changes were essential not only for our health but for that of the planet and many of the things living on it.   I began to write not only about cooking but about eating, about food. I began speaking publicly about the relationships among eating, health, and the environment, and I began changing my work at the New York Times: After nearly twenty years of writing about recipes, cooking, and the delights of food, mostly for the Dining section, I branched out to Week In Review and other sections. This led, eventually, to my becoming a Times Opinion writer, with my main subject being food: how, what, and why we eat, and the forces that affect those things.   There’s no lack of subject matter, that’s for sure: Food touches everything. You can’t discuss it without considering the environment, health, the role of animals other than humans in this world, the economy, politics, trade, globalization, or most other important issues. This includes such unlikely and seemingly unrelated matters as global warming: Industrialized livestock production, for example, appears to be accountable for a fifth or more of the greenhouse gases that are causing climate change.   But chances are you didn’t buy this book to save the planet, or to improve animal welfare, or even to think about those things. I am not an ardent follower of Mark Bittman though I do own and appreciate a set of cookbooks he authored. I used to be quite the carnivore but a couple of years ago altered my eating habits (largely courtesy of Alton Brown's list-intensive approach advocated in the "Good Eats" episode "Live and Let Diet") and started exercising regularly. I have lost 74 pounds and have successfully kept it off largely through a vegetable and fruit-intensive diet with much less meat. My physician was impressed with my progress and at my last physical recommended that I read "VB6" as he thought it was excellent for people who generally had the right ideas about eating healthy but who could use some refinement and variety in their diets. I purchased and read the book cover to cover and really liked it.I like that Bittman's approach is highly flexible and personalized, and there are certainly plenty of recipes he recommends that I don't like, but there are plenty of insight into lesser known foods and how to employ them, which I found enlightening. There are parts of the book (especially in the chapter one) where Bittman comes across as a bit holier-than-thou, but despite that the rest of the book is so good I still think it rates five stars. Chapter two is a fantastic review of nutritional concepts and is definitely worth the price of the book on its own (I found the information about decreasing the amount of Omega 6's in our diets on pp. 56-57 to be interesting in particular.) The idea of being a part-time vegan had honestly never occurred to me before, and while I don't strictly follow all his rules I have largely adopted a plant-based diet and think I am substantially healthier than I have been in years. As a side note, I also have been trying to eliminate BPA plastics from my kitchen as Bittman advocates. I am unsure how harmful they are, but there are good alternatives so I see no reason not to do so.The last half of the book is composed mostly of recipes and food preparation guidelines, largely divided by meal types (there's an excellent text box on vegan snacking on p. 185.) I found the breakfast and dinner options to be the most useful and tasteful: especially note the recipes on p. 138 for "Homemade Cold Cereal," p. 151 for "Corny Hoecakes," p. 166 for "Stewed Tomatoes and Beans," p. 224 for "Meatballs, the New Way," and on p. 225 for "Succotash, Greens, and Sausage." Obviously the final two are from the after 6:00 PM non-vegan (but still meat portion-conscious) part of the book. One of the most useful things in the book is on p. 200, the "Master Stir-Fry Formula" which is eminently flexible and can be made with or without meat. The creativity you can express here is unlimited.While there are "VB6" recipes that I am not wild about, on balance I like the food preparations described here. I like the way I feel eating less meat, and think this book is a great introduction to vegan or vegetarian concepts for people who would like not to consume animal products but have a tough time not having an occasional burger. I am glad my doctor recommended this book to me; I now recommend it to you.

I've been following this type of lifestyle since last year and I've lost nearly 100 pounds so far. I didn't have to wait on this book because Bittman has openly shared his VB6 lifestyle for a few years, and I've read every article and blog post with interest. I couldn't wait to get hold of his new book and I ordered the Kindle version at midnight when it was released.VB6 is informative and inspiring. It provides the basis for a very liveable lifestyle that has the potential to turn your life around, just as it did mine. The book includes a 28 day menu plan to get you started, complete with a variety of delicious recipes. Weekly wildcards let you bend away from plants if you are in a pinch or social situation that requires it.The recipes range from simple to complex, but none require special skills or hard to find ingredients. The recipes include more nutrition info than most other healthy cookbook provides. They include calories, cholesterol, fat, sat fats, protein, carbs, sodium, fiber, trans fats, and sugar.I've lived a plant strong lifestyle, but not 100% plants, for the last decade. I still ate cheese and other dairy products. I ate seafood a few times a year. I also ate a lot of junk. Processed foods, too many grains, and way too much sugar. Definitely not enough vegetables. I battled my weight and felt terrible.I strongly dislike labels such as vegan and vegetarian. Labels give some people reason to judge others and their dietary choices, which is really just silly. They also evoke guilt and confusion when someone struggles to conform. This is NOT a book about being vegan. VB6 is not about perfection or 100% adherence to a specific plan. It's about making better choices that we can live with.If you've read Food Matters, another book by Bittman, then you are already familiar with the concept behind this lifestyle. Both books go into detail about how consuming excessive animal products can potentially damage not only our health, but also our environment. Either book, in my opinion, should be read by everyone who is concerned about their health and/or the planet. The statistics in the book are both shocking and depressing. However, the lifestyle changes suggested also offer hope and new possibilities.Aside from doing my part for the environment, VB6 has allowed me to make dramatic changes with my health. As I mentioned earlier, I've lost a lot of weight with this lifestyle. I still have a way to go before I reach my goal, but I have no doubt that I'll make it. Why? Because this is easy. It's the easiest thing I've ever done, and I'm 51 years old.The first principle of the VB6 philosophy is to eat fruit and vegetables in abundance. I eat a LOT of vegetables and fruits every day. Bittman suggests that as we eat more fruits and veggies, we will naturally shift away from animal products and junk. I found that to be true in my case. I even snack on spinach, which is something I would have never done a few years ago. I eat large amounts of green veggies, and I always eat the rainbow.I initially spent a lot of time planning my meals and prepping veggies. This became easier with time and experience. I have also learned to like a lot of foods that I never enjoyed before. Bittman suggests trying new vegetables, and lets us know we may not like everything we try. That's ok. We'll still end up expanding our menu as our tastes change. It's been well worth the extra effort to adapt to this lifestyle.Every meal is filling and delicious. I slip away from a pure plant diet at dinner when I add wild caught fish or other seafood to my meal. I really love seafood and missed it when I tried to conform to a more strict veg diet. If I really want a little cheese or other dairy then I'll eat it. Guilt free. I eat what I want to eat. The difference is that I no longer want the foods I used to eat. I crave healthy food! I cook from scratch and don't buy packaged, processed foods anymore. I avoid or limit added sugar. I can't even remember the last time I ate a potato chip. My favorite snack or dessert now is fresh fruit. With VB6 I could eat a little of those things with dinner if I wanted them, but I honestly no longer want them anymore.Bittman points out that weight is only one component of our health. My fasting blood glucose levels used to average between 100 and 120 before I changed my lifestyle. Now they average in the 70s! My energy level is unbelievable and I never get tired. My skin even looks better. I exercise every day and I have the energy to stick with it.I no longer have to struggle to explain my dietary lifestyle to people. No, I'm not vegan. I'm not even vegetarian. It's so much easier to just say I follow a VB6 lifestyle. Maybe that's a label I can live with.

After a year of not eating well, it was time to get back on track. But I didn't want to do another popular point-counting diet again, because I often felt hungry. I tried low carb, but I felt snugglish and it messed with my digestive system. I didn't want to count calories or measure. I didn't want to permanently eliminate foods that my body did fine with. Then I came across VB6 and after 2 months, I'm still a big fan.I realized that my major problem was overeating, because I can't stop eating white foods, dairy, meat, and processed food. I would eat until stuffed. When I take those foods out, I realize I no longer have a problem overeating. I finally know what it means to eat until satisfied and I never have to feel hungry. After 2 months, I can no longer eat the same size potions when at restaurants and I'm making better choices, no longer enjoying heavy foods as much.I love that I don't feel deprived and I don't need to be perfect. My goal is to do the slow weight loss track, like a pound a month. So far I am down 4 lbs, which is significant for being a short person like me. I'm excited to stick with this plan!

Very informative and full of good food suggestions. Perfect solution for those not ready to go totally vegan yet but want to Improve their diets.

I have tried eating vegan in the past. it was just to drastic a change to make all at once. I have read some of the other vegan books. They all seem to try and push the idea based on cruelty to animals. I saw Mark Bittman when he appeared on "The Chew" show. I liked what he had to say and so I purchased the book. I have purchased Mark Bittman's books in the past including his "How To Cook Everything Vegetarian." It was a great book to pair with the VB6 book. Go vegan part time for your health.
