This is a book that has changed my life. I've read A LOT of books on how to make good new habits. I've focused on the spiritual aspect of habits, I've gone to "butt kicking" but nothing ever stuck. Things would seem to go great for a week or so, then I would either get obsessive or completely forget about the habits I was trying to create for myself.This is a fresh look, and original way, in understanding how my mind works. It makes sense to me, I understand it, and I think about what I've learned through out the day. Slow Mind versus Fast Mind, Future Self and Past Self. The exercises at the end of each chapter are new and different.That's what I love about this book. It's so original, such a different way of making new habits.

This is a must read for anyone with a strong interest in personal development. The author presents a compelling mindshift for looking at our efforts to engineer self-change from the perspective of a designer. Approaching change as a designer liberates us from the heavy burden of failed attempts to instill a given change. We just keep iterating and tinkering like any good designer. One key insight is the idea of anticipating and being prepared for relapse, as the new design battles the old design for primacy in our behavior patterns. The book may warrant multiple readings. It is at once anecdotal and filled with stories from the author's own life and those she has known. But there are strong underlying concepts as well that deserve reflection and study. I rate Well Designed Life 10/10.

Having read a lot of self improvement books, I can say that this one is one of the best. It contains a new (to me) approach to how our minds work, and how to restructure or design our lives for greater freedom and happiness. It is well organized and compelling. Having read it on Kindle, I am now going back to reread it in paperback. I felt I was underlining the whole book.I recommend this book to anyone who has tried lots of strategies to improve their daily habits, and has gotten discouraged with repeated failure. I am inspired and I think you will be too!

I liked how this author took actual brain science to explain our repetitive behaviors. It made the material more interesting and approachable to have explanations of direct links between the two. It made me feel as though the areas I would like to improve and focus upon in my life are actually fixable with a manageable plan which Dr. Bobinet helps you to put in place. I've gone on to recommend this book to several friends and it has led to many interesting conversations. If you are interested in breaking negative behaviors and habits that keep you from moving forward in your life, this book offers a helpful science based approach.

Dr. Kyra Bobinet makes neuroscience and behavior change accessible to all in an enjoyable, well-written read. A great book for anyone wanting to change their life, using personal examples and structured exercises to design change. I plan to recommend it to my patients who are struggling to stay motivated with their health and life choices. As one of her former medical school classmates, and current friend, I remain in awe of her wisdom, compassion and strengths, and her willingness to share personal examples to help others succeed in iterating behavior change.

I don't usually read self-help books - mainly because I have often felt I can't change things in my life that I would like to be different - but I read this one with hope and gratitude that at last here was a book that would be actually useful. Maybe I could design my life. I was inspired. The book is so well written and so engaging, and well grounded in science, which is very important to me. I liked the concept of iterating on your design for life, of making small changes, adjusting your plan so that it will work for you, rather than glving up, of understanding what unknown forces and triggers shape your behavior. Dr. Bobinet shows you how to plan, how to evaluate your plan, how to modify it. I am applying the lessons of this book to some health changes I always knew I should make, but designing your life well also encompasses relationships, work-related issues, personal growth and many other spheres of life. I am delighted to have found this book.

I enjoyed the balances within this book: The balance of science vs. personal real life stories; the balance of ease in reading vs. the desire to slow down and absorb, the balance of written learning vs. hands on exercises for learning; This was a motivating, powerful yet practical book that was a pleasure to read.

An Amazing Book! A fundamentally different approach to behavior change. The combination of neuroscience, meditation, mindfulness, and personal empowerment, along with practical design tools, makes this is a book you will go back and read again many, many times. The personal and engaging writing style made this one of the most enjoyable books I have read in a very long time!

Pretty much useless. I was looking for a book to get me started and apparently this isn't it. You can find all this info on the internet for free. It's great that recioes are included but all this book is a repeat of what a keto diet is and not how to actually do it. The book says to pay attention to your macros...how about teaching someone how many they are suppose to consume. It's great the author had success in this lifestyle but the book is just a testimonial, the principles of a keto diet, tips and recipes. There is no helpful info on figuring out your daily macros and getting started.

Not a bad book. I was looking to gain more info on keto. This gives the basics. It has lots of recipes I won't make. I could've found most of this info online... But it was cheap so whatever. I read it once.... And than just referred to support groups on fb and such since. I found those to be more useful.

Recipes are incomplete, shopping lists are missing several items. What a waste of time (meal prepping,) money (cost of ingredients and recipes don't turn out.) Buyer beware.

This book is just what I needed to begin my journey to a healthier eating lifestyle as well as a journey of weight loss. It was an easy read. Straight to the point with the best things to do and not do in accordance to the ketogenic lifestyle. Lays out the first 3 weeks plain and simple starting with a weekly shopping list that leads into easy to follow recipes to keep you on track for the first 3 weeks of this healthy journey.

Seriously, don’t bother with this book. It looks like some child in high school had to do a report on the Keto diet and they probably got a D on it. It gives you no information but pages of simple and I mean simple in a bad way, recipes. The print is so big that what could have been said on two pages they stretch out to 20.I find this book very amateurish.

Perhaps I went into this book with faulty expectations... I was expecting something that may delve deep into neurobiology and related phenomenon or something that would really illuminate a possible way to leverage the elusive flow state. However, most of the book was filled with banal exposition of the lives of action/adventure athletes. I found it a little interesting, but for the most part, I just couldn't find myself caring. One anecdote could have provided enough of a context to work with, but more than half of the book is filled with vapid tales that appear intended to motivate or some kind of tributary.The book seems filled with lots of talk of flow state with the very occasional timid suggestion of reproducing the state. Weak read.

This is NOT a book about the comic book hero. It’s a book about a mental state called “the flow” and how adventure and extreme athletes have used it to make tremendous strides in their sports. The characteristics of the flow include extreme focus, time dilation / time distortion, a vanishing sense of self, extremely high performance, fearlessness, and a falling away of everything non-essential to the task at hand.Kotler is by no means the first author to write about the flow. The term was inaugurated by a book entitled “Flow” first published in 1990 by a University of Chicago Psychology professor named Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. Csikszentmihalyi coined the term in the process of conducting a study on happiness. He found that happy people tended to engage in activities in which they could immerse themselves and find the zone. Contrary to the early part of Kotler’s book--in which it sounds like adventure athletes cornered the market on flow--Csikszentmihalyi says that said activity could be work or hobby and that the flow is to be found in poetry writing, yoga, martial arts, copy writing, or potentially any activity in which the skill level and challenge are both high.(To be fair, Kotler does get around to recognizing that extreme athletes neither invented nor exclusively exploit the flow. However, his—well-taken—point is that such athletes are unusually good a finding, and dropping deep into, the flow in part because risk-taking behavior is an important trigger. And for free climbers [rock climbers without ropes], mega-ramp skateboarders, and bodysuit skydivers sometimes there are only two possible states of existence—the flow and being scraped off a rock.) It should be noted that some of the elements of flow sound a lot like the states that have been described by various mystical religious traditions for centuries, e.g. the dissolution of a feeling of separation between self and the rest of the universe. Warning: religious readers may find it disconcerting to read that there are scientific explanations for states that were once attributed to communion with god or the like.While I’ve given Kotler’s book high rating, I haven’t yet given one reason to read it—and I do recommend people read it. First, while Csikszentmihalyi is the “father” of flow research, his methods were decidedly low tech--i.e. surveys and interviews—but Kotler reports on more recent studies involving neuroanatomy, neuroelectricity, and neurochemistry. Second, while Kotler delves into the science of the flow, he does so in a manner that is approachable to non-scientists. Finally, all of the narrative accounts of extreme athletes interspersed with the more technical commentary make for a very readable book, even if one is not particularly knowledgeable of—or interested in—such sports. I gave this book a high rating both for its food-for-thought value, and because of its high readability.I will admit that I was not so enamored of the book when I first began it, and other readers may find the same irritation. For one thing, Kotler’s adoration of extreme athletes comes off sounding like diminishment of mainstream athletes and others involved in “flowy” activities. A prime example of this is seen in Chapter 1. Kotler gives us an endearing description of how gymnast Kerri Strug won the gold in the 1996 Olympics by sticking a landing on a shattered ankle. However, he then comes off a bit douchey when he suggests that Strug’s achievement pales in comparison to Danny Way’s skateboard jumps at the Great Wall of China.For another thing, in his zealousness to prove that extreme sports practitioners are full-awesome while mainstream athletes are “meh,” Kotler makes some comparisons that seem apples and oranges to a neophyte such as me. If they are fair comparisons, he certainly doesn’t explain why they should be considered so. The best example of this is when he states that Olympic divers took decades to achieve increases in rotation that extreme skiers and skateboarders surpassed in much less time. This seems unreasonable for two reasons. First, divers have a very standard distance in which to achieve their acrobatics. In other words, they don’t get to build a “mega-platform” that’s 50% taller like Danny Way creates “mega-ramps” that were bigger than ever before. Of course, if you can increase the distance between yourself and the ground you can increase your spins, rotations, or whatever much more quickly (yes, your danger goes up vastly, I’m not diminishing that.) Second, the divers gained zero advantage from technological improvements, but the same cannot be said for skiers and skateboarders. In other words, if you go from skis made of oak to ones made of carbon nanotubes (that are 50 times stronger and 1/100th of the weight) of course you’re going to make gains faster.Perhaps, I’m overstating Kotler’s disdain for mainstream athletics, but that’s what happens when one uses a national hero as a set up to show how much more awesome a relatively unknown skateboarder is (among skateboarders Way is extremely well-known but he’s not a household name as the Olympian was--at least for a short time in the late 90’s.) I suspect that Kotler was just trying to convince a general audience that the athletes he’s speaking about aren’t pot-smoking knuckleheads who are as likely to be seen on America’s Funniest Home Videos crushing their nads on a handrail as setting a new world record. These men and women are serious people engaged in serious activities, and they give it their all. They do deserve more respect for that than they are probably given by broad sectors of the populace. Perhaps, the importance of what these folks are achieving does need to be conveyed because the demographic that reads books and the one that follows extreme sports probably has wide wings of non-overlapping area. (I’m not saying skateboarders are illiterate or bookworms don’t skate--just that the Venn diagram has substantial areas of mutual exclusivity.)As I indicated above, in each chapter we get both some insight into the nature of the flow and its triggers and stories of adventure / extreme athletes that serve as examples of what’s being discussed. In chapter 2 we learn what the flow looks like in terms of brain waves (i.e. high theta/low alpha, or between meditation and a relaxed / resting state of wakefulness.) In chapter 3, we learn about the neuroanatomy of the flow in terms of what areas of the brain it lights up, and that it’s at least as important what areas shut down. In chapter 4, we learn about the neurochemistry of the flow and that a cocktail of dopamine, norepinephrine, endorphins, anandamide, and serotonin makes up the chemistry of flow, but, critically, not so much with the adrenaline. The subsequent chapters deal with triggers of the flow, and what conditions best set up achievement of this state of mind.Chapter 9 stands out as an important, but quite different, portion of the book. It deals with the downside (or dark side) of the flow. This has a lot to do with the fact that the aforementioned internal substances (and the flow state in general) are quite addictive. While it’s unfair to say, and unlikely, that the extreme athletes Kotler writes about (i.e. the ones at the top of their games) are drug addicts as some might assume of skate boarders, snow boarders, and the like, it may not be unreasonable to say that they have a kind of monkey on their backs—albeit a perfectly legal one.As I’ve said, I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in this state of mind. One needn’t be interested in extreme sports to get a lot out of the book.

This book is crammed end to end with people jumping off buildings, skiing down cliffs, skateboarding, skydiving, surfing giant waves, etc. The core message is powerful but gets drowned in the author's over-the-top sports examples slathered far too liberally. It's almost like he doesn't have enough to say so he has to couch it in endless sports drama. It gets tiresome. So I'm going to do the same in this review. While repeating over and over how tedious his sports analogies are, I have to say that if you are patient, there are some real gems in this book worth picking up, and my recent meditations, study, sports and other activities have strongly benefitted from the reading. I'm not sure this will be the case for most, but it is a useful book if you are curious about how to engender flow in your life and you understand that flow happens in other places than just sports. The author does not do much to help you understand that. Just trust me on it.

Basically the book is a series of stories about extreme sport athletes with little to offer in the way of relating any practical application outside of dopamine fueled athletics. I was waiting until the final page for some kind of tie-in with the world outside of extreme sports and some practical training steps in the personal or corporate world, but these are never explored in any concrete way by the author. He just keeps boomeranging from one X Games feat to another, finally ending with a 800 mph skydive from outer space. Flow is an interesting state that all of us have experienced at one time or another. It is too bad that the author does little to explore the real world applications and steps the non-X Gamer can apply in real life.

No practical recommendations in this book other than Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's decades-old description of precursors or sidelines to the flow state.Somehow the Shaolin monks are never mentioned. A non-extreme-sport lifestyle dedicated to surpassing "normal" and engendering on-demand flow capability.The book did not transport me into a flow state.

Very good book. India has come back to Fort Kyle while she gets back on her feet. After escaping from an abusive marriage, all she wants is to move on. But when she runs into her childhood best friend Brody, she begins to remember the good things about her hometown.Brody has been in love with India since they were kids. His own marriage and divorce sent him back to Fort Kyle, where he plans to raise his triplet daughters in the small town where he grew up. Seeing India again revives his long-buried feelings.I enjoyed the development of the relationship between India and Brody. There were plenty of challenges for them to overcome. One of the biggest was India's determination to leave Fort Kyle as soon as she can. She has a rocky relationship with her father, and she doesn't want that to affect her son. There is also the ongoing feud between her father and Brody's father that makes a relationship between them awkward at best when it comes to their families. Brody has so much going on in his life that fitting in a relationship seems impossible. He is helping his father with the ranch and their businesses, as well as taking care of his daughters. To top it off he has been shanghaied into running for mayor. But burying those feelings again proves to be impossible.I loved watching the sparks fly between Brody and India as she realizes that she is looking at him as more than a friend. But she is afraid to risk her heart again, especially with someone who is now rooted in Fort Kyle. I loved the way that Brody knows her so well and finds little ways to show her how she belongs. He also senses that there was more to her marriage than she has said, and his protectiveness comes out. I liked seeing India begin to trust again and give in to her attraction to Brody. But she isn't all the way in yet and insists that all she has to give is short term. I ached for her and her fears about what the family feud would do to their relationship. I loved how Brody wouldn't give up, and the steps he took to make it happen. His big moment at the end was sweet and romantic.The kids in this book were adorable. I loved Cal and how close he was to his mom. They had a terrific relationship. I loved how good he was with Brody's girls, especially Amberleigh. I really enjoyed the scenes where just saying Cal's name would get her to cooperate. The triplets were terrific too. Each one had her own distinct personality. I think Amberleigh was my favorite, especially when it came to her shoes. I really enjoyed seeing how they brought out the softer side of Brody. They bonded with India quickly and seeing the whole group together it was obvious they were meant to be a family.

The story packs a powerful friends to lovers storyline with characters super easy to fall for, a fast paced storyline and so many things to smile about! Really fun read! India Boone knows that returning home to Ft. Kyle, Texas was her only option when life left her with a son to raise and a husband that flew the coop, but now she feels stuck there with one thing after another eating away at her "get out of town" stash. She just might have a change of heart about the rush to leave when she reconnects with an old friend.Brody Wallace decided city life wasn't for him once he had triplet daughters to need more attention than he had to give in his high stress job as an attorney. Now back in Ft. Kyle and enjoying the good life with his adorable girls, he's thrilled when he runs into India. They were best buds growing up, and he's been secretly in love with her for as long as he can remember. He knows she's gun shy after the marriage she had previously, but he hopes spending some quality time with his family will show her that small town life isn't so bad after all!

I had seen Davis' videos on youTube, and was very impressed by him. I bought a couple of his books initially, and then several others so that I now have 9 of them. Each one, so far, is excellent--it is taking me longer than I expected to read them because there is so much information to absorb. If you want to learn whatever the subject matter of the book is, from the concepts behind the subject (night photography, lighting, etc.) planning for the picture (e.g., the use of lightboxes to create translucent pictures), to the detailed post-processing of them in Photoshop or equivalent, you will not be disappointed--at least, I haven't.

Awesome Book. Harold Davis is an incredible photographer and teacher. I have taken an online class of his via Craftsy: Close-up Flowers and I have bought several of his books on amazon. He makes learning new ways and techniques so much fun and really brings out the creativity in every shot he takes. I highly recommend this book and his other books. He tells you the technical aspects of his photos, BUT he is more on the creative side of photography and motivates the reader to be creative in shooting. I will definitely buy more of his books!!

There are books that teach you how to take pictures by specifying exact camera settings and walk you through the post processing work flow from there on, and then, there is Harold Davis and his Creative Series of books. Photography is not just about framing your scene sticking rigidly to compositional rules. It's about understanding the subtle interplay of light with the subject, the camera and the scene in general. Davis does an amazing job teaching you each of these nuances. What are the different kinds of light?, Where should I position the camera to make the best use of light?, How do I use available light? These are just some of the many questions for which you will find insightful answers.Creative Lighting is not a book about camera settings that you need to get to make your pictures pop, nor is it a book extolling the glory of photoshop or lightroom. It is a book about understanding light, about understanding the dynamics of various kinds of light right from natural light to more complicated lighting setups in studios . Why do you need this? Understanding light is crucial and is in most cases the "make or break" factor in your images. No amount of post-processing can fix an image that has been shot without accounting for the quality of light.The book has five sections:1)Seeing the Light2)Exposure and Lighting3)Working with Ambient Light4)Lighting in the Studio5)Lighting in the Digital DarkroomEach section takes on different aspects of light with numerous images as examples. In fact, you would get your money's worth just looking at the inspiring images that are in the book. For those of you who want to know the camera settings, the book has them too. The author explains his intent behind shooting each example in a certain way. Some images are built by stacking multiple exposures together, for example, star trails. However, there could have been some more detail in areas such as light painting, where I felt, the author could have shared some more of his insight.The language is simple, the writing is clear and the examples are very useful and inspiring. Creative Lighting in my opinion is more tailored to beginners but is a valuable refresher for more advanced photographers as well. This is a must have for anyone who wants to make good images great.

awesome book, lots of great tips

great learning book

I now own all his books on various aspects of digital photography. They are all great. They are relatively shorter than most such books, but he gets right to the point and explains things clearly with great shots, most of which are his own. This one is mostly about natural light situations, and he explores most of the common situations (twilight, sunset, after dark, direction of sun, etc.). I learned a fair amount and although I may not use it again (it's not a bible or set of recipes) it was worth the money.

Interesting book, good ideas. Beautiful photos inside. I have read it twice and refer to it often when I know I will be taking some fun night photos.
