From Booklist
W. E. B. DuBois famously stated that “the problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color-line,†and this slim volume tracks twenty-first-century data along that line. This statistical snapshot of black Americans examines how bias is affected (and, surprisingly, not affected) by demographics and numbers. Chapters include “Education,†“Entertainment and Sports,†“Health,†“Justice,†and “Politics, Voting, and Civic Engagement.†Each set of statistics is framed by a question (for example, “What is the percentage of Black teachers, and where do they teach?†and “How many black people are employed in the science, technology, and engineering sectors?â€). Two appendixes look specifically at black females and black males, and there are extensive notes for each chapter. This thought-provoking, browsable book is recommended for libraries of all types. --Rebecca Vnuk

"Black Stats is an important resource for anyone seeking a better understanding of the status of Black America."—Benjamin Todd Jealous, former President and CEO, NAACP "Thank you, Monique Morris, for this gift of knowledge. Black Stats is a brilliant and needed work. We can no longer claim that we didn’t know the depth of our crises or the wealth of our resources and resilience available to counter them. Now that we have the data, we must use it strategically to move our people—the nation and this troubled world—forward."—Susan L. Taylor, Founder & CEO, National CARES Mentoring Movement, Editor-in-Chief Emeritus, Essence Magazine "Black Stats is a great tool offering descriptive statistics on the condition of our nation's promise of freedom, justice, equality and economic opportunity for all."—Marc H. Got this book for many reasons, but one of the main reasons is that it is chock full of information that spans so many different areas. I appreciate the time and effort that went into compiling all of the information presented regarding African-Americans. This is a must have for your viewing and to keep at arms length as a reference.
Black Stats should be required reading from middle school, high school, college and post graduate school. White people educated in the humanities seem to already have a grasp on what our stats are and build their world and ours around that knowledge; but those who need to know most; (us) could have a firmer grip on the lever.
This book provides excellent information. It's a very desirable reference tool and saves time. Inst3ead of looking up various information on multiple internet sites, it's here under one cover -- right at one's fingertips.Clarice Thomas
This book was purchased for use in a class I was taking called "Intro to African American Experience." A lot of statistics about the Black experience. Many of which were not expected and interesting.
A great desideratum regarding the people who make up numbers and what we collectively choose to assign value. I hghly recommend this book as a refresher for why measuring what matters counts, and counting what matters.
This is an excellent read! If you want the statistics regarding African Americans growth in the economy from finances, education, and marriage then this is a must have!Dr. Monique W. Morris is a fabulous author.
This is an informative resource that should be included in every course on the Black experience. Thanks to Morris for this compilation of important facts about the Black community.
A wealth of information compacted in 219 pages for the black community on the topics of Health, Education and the value of Civic Involvement. According to the "The Negro Yearbook and Annual Encyclopedia of the Negro" The total worth of African Americans in 1911 was $700 million dollars. Black Stats provides pertinent data for the correlation of cultural trends and economic growth for the Black Community in the twenty-first century. It paints a vivid picture of the term "Where do we go from here?" Do yourself and those that you care about a favor and simply purchase this book!
