In response to what the protagonists need and the title so aptly promises, the novel enfolds like a deep breath of New England country air. In a lyrical fashion, the writing takes us on a journey through both metaphoric and psychological landscapes, gorgeously depicted, into what brings joy and respite to those of us caught in the daily grind. At the same time, the reader encounters the grounding details of everyday life – a walk by a lake, a home-cooked dinner accompanied by a glass of wine, someone who takes the time to listen – that all remind us about what we truly cherish: the simple yet sensory aspects of life. The alternating perspectives of the main characters add another level of complexity that leads to the story unfolding like a mystery that pulls us in. And this pulling in makes "The Taste of Air' a page turner that becomes one’s best friend early on and stays that way; let’s hope for a sequel, please.
The Taste of Air by Gail Cleare is a well-written novel examining the feelings, hopes, and dreams of two grown sisters as they discover their elderly mother's secret life in a Vermont lake cottage. The pages are filled with descriptive paragraphs of the gorgeous New England countryside. Cleare's words made me feel the crisp clean air. It was easy to walk alongside the characters. It was hard to put down.I'm typically pretty good at predicting a twist or turn, but this lovely story held my attention throughout as I wondered what could possibly turn up next. The author does a terrific job at telling the story, while developing her characters, causing the reader to care about each of them, even the ones that lack likability. They come alive in the reader's mind and I hope for a sequel and will read it immediately if one is released. The main character, Nell, struggles with personal satisfaction as a stay at home mom even though she is married to a supportive and good man. I could relate to her confusing feelings of wanting more and experiencing guilt for wanting it. The emotional struggle causes her to hold on to the secret life of her mother as she begins to uncover the secrets. Her sister Bridget, has led a completely different life and through this family crisis, she too begins to work through her own emotional struggles. The story is one of hope and resolution found in some of the most unlikely relationships and friendships. I highly recommend this book.*I received a copy of this book in return for my honest review* and have since recommended it to many friends. I liked it that much.
I thoroughly enjoyed this well-developed story of Nell, Bridget, and their mother, Mary. We learn their lives, hopes, struggles and dreams as the story unfolds. From the first page, the reader is transformed by the expert storytelling abilities of the author. The novel, though simplistic, has heart. The writing is incredibly satisfying. It’s the kind of book that has you thinking about the characters, even when you have to put the book down for the mundane task of fixing dinner. Without realizing it, you find yourself wondering what happens in this New England lakehouse while you’re away, and you long to return as soon as possible. Great find!
I can honestly say I loved this book from beginning to end. It is a wonderfully complex story that slowly unfolds to include a variety of mysteriously intersecting lives. It is truly like a taste of fresh air! Ms. Cleare has a gift for creating detailed descriptions of Nature, objects & circumstances that make them come alive; the beautifully developed plot of richly detailed characters & their experiences is both refreshing & comfortable. A very satisfying reading experience!
It is now 1 o'clock in the morning. And I've been reading this book since 10 o'clock this morning. That tells you I couldn't put it down. Or I didn't want to put it down.Ever been there? Wonderful isn't it?I come from new England and have been in Vermont many times. The author's descriptions of the area, particularly in the fall... were things I've experienced but never had the words for. I felt myself standing exactly where the characters were. The air in Vermont really does smell the ways that she described: Maple syrup, bracingly cold, and it awakens a human being in a way no other place can. The emotions, including the tensions, the confusions.. all of it made me smile, gasp, and tear up. All of the characters were real people, full of flaws, perfectly imperfect.. And I felt invested in each one of their journeys.I am hoping that she has other books.
A beautifully written story about two sisters, their mother and having to see each other as women not just a mother or sister. The characters are well developed and invoke hope from the reader. The story is thought provoking, flows nicely and is a very easy read.Gail Cleare has become one of my favorite authors. Her writing style keeps you engaged and wanting more.*I received a copy of this book in return for my honest review*.
Gail Cleare tells the story by weaving past and present though vivid dialogue rather than narrative. This method of telling the story makes the characters come alive, allowing us to see how they grow throughout the years and how their pasts affect their current lives. The Taste of Air is a story that should not be rushed through, even though I was VERY tempted to do just that. It is a story to be savored and reread, which I know I will do from time to time. It is a story of mothers and fathers, of children lost and found, and it is a story that stays with you after you read the last word. Don't miss it!
Their mom had a secret life nobody knew about. She was supposed to be safely living in an assisted living center. This book was very well written - in such a way that you don't want to put it down. Haven't you ever wished you could just simply run away and live a life that is separate from your real life? This story hurt my heart and made me love Mary all at the same time.
