Excellent book - a must read for all pastors, no matter what size church, but especially for those with under 250. Your load will be lightened and you will be encouraged, not to try and grow your numbers but simply fulfill the call God has for you. You will appreciate your size and look to build health, not numbers.
Grasshopper Myth was ground breaking. This book shows what to do next. Karl's insights into small church dynamics are significant and not to be ignored by anyone wanting a healthy church. As a small church pastor for 50 years I can say this is the best book ever written for small churches.
I really like this. I had some laymen read it and they thought it was kind of redundant. However, as a pastor of a small church this was thoughtful and a good read. Small churches really are different. Some things are worse, some things are better. Karl Vaters always has something worthwhile to say about smaller churches, especially to the pastors of those churches.
I would HIGHLY recommend getting the book, "Small Church Essentials," by Karl Vaters. It is NOT a book on how to grow your church bigger. Rather, it is a book that will transform your thinking about the potential of your small church.This should be REQUIRED reading for all pastors of small churches. It will renew your vision, rekindle your fire and help you think outside the walls of your building!
This book has been refreshing and challenging. Karl is a champion for the small church that is needed so much by those struggling to figure out whether God has abandoned small churches. The answer is a resounding...no!
Karl Vaters has done it again! Just like "The Grasshopper Myth" this book is an excellent tool for most pastors and church leaders. There are great rubber hits the road examples and tools to help your church become a healthy church regardless of the size. An enjoyable and interesting read!
This book made tangible the general talk I've heard that the size of a church affects how it ministers. Vaters makes very important points that small churches are not just less adequate versions of large churches but are strategically important in ways that large churches cannot be.
This was an easier read made quicker because I really appreciated Karl's heart for the church, at any size. His focus on small churches is well thought out and passionate. He has some therapeutically helpful writing for those in small church ministry who might wonder why they aren't the next megachurch to spring up. I love his emphasis on health and doing what you are already good at. Your church is big enough!
