Review
"An accessible and wide-ranging introduction to the dirty work of cleaning up the internet."—Anna Lauren Hoffmann, ScienceFinalist for the 2019 PROSE awards, Media and Cultural Studies category"In this lively and entertaining book, Tarleton Gillespie shows us how social media regulate our speech in many different ways, some overt and some hidden. He explains why content moderation is not a peripheral function of social media, but central to their very existence."—Jack Balkin, Yale Law School“Online platforms are defining our technological landscape, shaping our lives online and off. Custodians of the Internet is the exquisitely-drawn map that shows us how they do it.”—Jonathan Zittrain, author of The Future of the Internet and How to Stop It“In this timely and important book, Gillespie deftly reveals the factors that shape social media platforms, and thus our world. Clear-eyed and incisive, a must-read for anyone interested in the influence of platforms, the forces that structure this influence, and crucially how to move forward.”—Zeynep Tufekci, contributing opinion writer for The New York Times and author of Twitter and Tear Gas"Truly stellar. Gillespie’s analysis deftly contextualizes moderation policies on social media platforms, and illuminates how the platforms' underlying values are baked into these policies. The result is essential reading."—Whitney M. Phillips, author of This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things: Mapping the Relationship Between Online Trolling and Mainstream Culture“No one knows how digital platforms are shaping our lives better than Tarleton Gillespie. This book is an essential guide to the social and technical processes that animate our new media – and to the principles by which we might put them to more democratic ends.”—Fred Turner, author of The Democratic Surround: Multimedia and American Liberalism from World War II to the Psychedelic Sixties

I was disappointed with the book. It goes into great detail of the difficulties and expense of "moderating" the content of the millions of comments submitted; mostly related to obscenity, nudity, and hate mail. There are no social implications here; these are strictly business considerations, to keep as many clicks coming in to satisfy the advertisers. To me, the more important consideration would have been the political comments and proliferation of fake news
I highly encourage anyone that’s interested in the inter workings of the internet to look into this book.
lucid, persuasive.
I was involved with content moderation at numerous early internet companies - Blogger, Flickr, LiveJournal. A justice might have once said that identifying pornography is easy because "you know it when you see it," but content moderation actually involves an infinite number of shades of gray. Deciding what is offensive, hateful, obscene, etc. is extraordinarily hard work. Few appreciate the complexity of the problem, let alone the ugly reality of what it means for technology companies to be deciding what is and isn't acceptable. This astonishing book by Tarleton Gillespie offers a critical insight into the political nature of the seemingly mundane work of deciding what is and isn't appropriate on platforms. Companies like Facebook have a complex governance challenge in front of them and there is no way for them to be neutral arbiters of social norms, and yet, because of their services, they must. As Gillespie argues, all algorithmic systems are political in nature, regardless of whether or not engineers want them to be. And all content moderation practices involve deciding the norms and boundaries of cultural values. This is a thoroughly researched and rich book examining a defining issue of our time, written in a delightful manner that is easy to read while also being extraordinarily informative. This book is an important read for anyone who builds platforms as well as those who use them. More importantly, it's an essential book for those who are questioning the power that these companies have in our society.
This is an important book for this moment. Every week companies like Facebook and Google promise to clean up their services by hiring more humans and building out AI systems. Gillespie shows how difficult -- in some cases impossible -- building and maintaining such systems is. This book is clear and bracing. If you care about the future of our media systems you should read this book. Its lessons should last for many years.
Gillespie takes a platform studies approach to analyzing content moderation. Through interviews, case studies, and close readings, he takes us through a complex and thorny world. Platforms like YouTube and Facebook are designed for millions of pieces of content, but reviewing that content at scale is close to impossible. Rather than simply castigating platforms for their failure to moderate fairly, Gillespie explores why this is so, taking into account all the nuance and complications of modern social media use. A model study for graduate students to learn from, and an essential book for anyone interested in serious studies of social media.
