On Liberty (Dover Thrift Editions), by John Stuart Mill

From the Back Cover

Discussed and debated from time immemorial, the concept of personal liberty went without codification until the 1859 publication ofOn Liberty. John Stuart Mill's complete and resolute dedication to the cause of freedom inspired this treatise, an enduring work through which the concept remains well known and studied. The British economist, philosopher, and ethical theorist's argument does not focus on "the so-called Liberty of the Will…but Civil, or Social Liberty: the nature and limits of the power which can be legitimately exercised by society over the individual." Mill asks and answers provocative questions relating to the boundaries of social authority and individual sovereignty. In powerful and persuasive prose, he declares that there is "one very simple principle" regarding the use of coercion in society—one may only coerce others either to defend oneself or to defend others from harm. The new edition offers students of political science and philosophy, in an inexpensive volume, one of the most influential studies on the nature of individual liberty and its role in a democratic society.

Reading Mill at this particular moment in our history is to be reminded not only of the source of our most cherished ideals of liberty and political liberalism but also of the powerful logical and moral reasons supporting our idea of individual freedom and responsibility. Both the writing and the supporting arguments are models of clarity, intellectual modesty and common sense. What a sad contrast to the empty headed slaganeering of today's political and moral discourse.

John Stuart Mill is one of the giants of political/practical philosophy. This book is very densely written; you get a full page worth of reading on each page. The book was written in 1859. So the language is a bit more formal and strange compared to contemporary writings. But it's very readable. He explains the thought process behind his opinions. They're very logical. If be reading And think "Gee, never thought of it that way" Or "so that's why things are the way they are". And, for a book written 160 years ago, it is surprising my relevant.TheHighly recommended!!

A solid work that everyone should read, regardless of political alignment. How do we balance societal well being with personal liberty? In an ideal democracy, the will of the government becomes the will of the majority, so how do we protect the minority? Why are free speech and diversity (even eccentricity) so desirable in the first place? Mill has some ideas.Pros: One of the most practical pieces from the utilitarian thinkers of the era. Almost prescient on a number of matters (his genealogy of christian morality, proto-feminist thinking, religious diversity as including atheism).Cons: I don't think that Mill ever fully resolves the concept of social tyranny in this work, which he rightly gives serious thought. Additionally, there is some (unsurprising) apologia for imperialism, and his assumption that Parliament is, or will become shortly, the will of the people, seems a bit overly optimistic.Regardless of these quibbles, I think this is an important read for anyone interested in political philosophy.

Amazing insight into the human condition with regard to thought processes, how one's ego can convince the mind that it is the only acceptable opinion. Appearing to have been in print for over a hundred and fifty years the author had an incredible clarity in explaining how the body politic encouraged opposing views in that day and age. The purpose of which was to sound out the reasoning of each opinion. Today this man would be heckled off the stage or assaulted for disagreeing with the far left, if that were to be the case. A mind opener for sure

Mill was an atheist and decidedly anti-Christian, and I state this for those who need to take this into account before reading an essay on world view. Despite this fact, John Stuart Mill would be most displeased with how Christians and religious conservatives are being vilified these days. He is definitely NOT in favor of shutting down dissenting opinions or open discussions, and the book has some potent quotes that could be applied to today's "politically correct" shenanigans. He makes a very strong case against the type of soft tyranny we are seeing today with regard to prevailing opinions on controversial topics. He clearly states that protection from government tyranny is not enough; there is also the tyranny of popular opinion toward unpopular opinion, and that people should be protected from this as well. Timely and relevant. Warning: the book is short, but it is not an "easy read." Well worth it nonetheless.

I ihave read Mill's On Liberty three times now. The Bromwich and Kateb version is the most helpful, as we not only get to read Mill's essay, but 6 supplementary essays - two "introductions" and four sometimes critical "reinterpretations" by respected theorists.Milll's basic point is simple: people should be left free to think and do as they please unless what they are doing causes actual harm to others. Mill's essay is spent both giving reasons for this principle, and exlporing what the principle means in practice. He offers a plurality of reasons for his libertarian ideas, some utilitarian in nature and some based on (what some might call) natural law. Not only does freedom of action and thought encourage innnovation, keep public discussion vigorous, and lead to a more effective social network than government incursion, but people just-plain prefer directing their own lives to being directed from outside.Mill gets into sticky territory, however, when he talks about the libertarian principle in concrete terms, as his distinction between what is private and what is public is often less clear than he might want. Should persons be free to tell others to do harm to themselves? Yes. Should parents be free not to educate their children? No. Should "vice-merchants" like bars, gambling parlors, and pornographers be free to conduct business without heavy government regulation? No. Should people be free to marry a plurality of spouses? If mormon, yes. If British, no.My biggest criticism - and a criticism offered in Richard Posner and Jeane Bethke Elshtain's essays - is that Mill is all over the map when his principle is "put to the real world" because the distinction between public and private is just-plain fuzzy. Another interesting criticism, brought up in Elshtain's essay, is that Mill demonstrates a very unjustified bias in favor of experiment over tradition (where the former seems always presumed inferior to the latter). In short, I like Mill's essay but see it as an edifice built on not-quite-solid sand. Mill relies on seperate categories, public and private, that are just not clear and distinct enough to be distinct. (While Dewey may have gone too far in the "all acts are social" direction, I think Dewey hit closer to the truth.) This is why the six supplementary essays in this edition are a nice touch.

One of the best books I have ever had the privilege to read. It has such a WONDERFUL way to tell the story of how we come to be. I just can't express how much I loved this book. There are not words enough to express the sweetness of this story. I m looking forward to sharing this book when I am asked " where did we come from?" If I knew some my church members would not go off the deep end I would love to share it with my Sunday school class. I can't express how much I recommend this book for young and old alike. Ladies and some men some of you this will touch in a way that you may find yourself in tears it is very touching.

Since first discovering this book, I have purchased it for baby shower gifts, birthday and Christmas gifts for children, and recommended it to others. I use it each year in January when I teach a children's rosary group about respecting life. Saint Francis said, "preach the gospel every day, using words if necessary." Written in secular words, this book does just that. The illustrations are stunning, the words are written exceptionally well in a story format for children to understand, and the message is timeless. This book is a treasure and should be on every child's bookshelf.

Absolutely wonderful book! This is a unique and wonderful book for children or families that are expecting. It speaks from the perspective of the unborn child, so it is simple for little children to understand. The child while in the womb is talking to his/her angel, who is offering some guidance about this new and confusing world. Very beautiful and gentle images.I will be buying more as gifts. The poor reviews were from people who were anti religious, so if you are uncomfortable about talking to children about angel, this book is not for you.

This is a wonderful book, and I am so pleased to have been able to find it...unable to get it locally anymore. It makes a great gift for an expectant couple--my son in law actually read it aloud during the pregnancies and then would read it after the birth to the newborn and mommy.

My go to gift for parents expecting child #2! It warms a parent to read it and the older siblings love it. It is such a warm and friendly approach to life and a great prompt in discussing the life that we don't see with our earthly eyes.

I love this book. I first got it to read to my son when I was pregnant. He was so interested in it. Now I buy it for all my pregnant friends. So special to think of the bond between a person and their guardian angel.

This is the first book we read to our newborn daughter. Of course it was more for us than her at that time, but as she gets older she understands more and more that life is sacred even inside the womb. I love the gentle element of faith in it and I think the illustrations are good as well. My daughter is almost 7 months old now and I can tell that she recognizes the baby on these pages. Highly recommend this book for all ages!

I was given a copy of this book 12 years ago when pregnant with my daughter. I recently shared it with a pregnant friend to read to her 5 year old. Within 10 minutes we were purchasing their own copy. The 5 year old LOVES reading it.I would HIGHLY recommend this book.

First, I must say I enjoyed, if that is the correct word, Albert DeMeo's book entitled For the Sins of My Father more than I did this one. If there is a lesson to learn from any of these books on mobsters is that the wages of crime in the mafia are either an early death or a prison sentence. We think of the stereotypical mobster with flashy automobiles (maroon Cadillac or Mercedes) with a girl on each arm flashing a wad of bills and a glitzy ring on their pinky. The oath of Omerta is a farce. As this book aptly illustrates the reality of the mob is one of paranoia. I had better kill him before he kills me. Your best friend is not to be trusted, because it is he who will set you at ease prior to the kill. The innocent looking Gemini Lounge held terror for those who would enter through a side door. That is where Roy DeMeo's butcher shop was located for those who entered did not leave in one piece. Roy's son paints a picture of a loving father in his book who doted on his children, and he was stunned to learn that his father's friends, who treated him so gently, would "break knuckles" of those who didn't pay their loans back on time. "Nothing personal, son. Strictly business."This book goes into considerable detail regarding Roy DeMeo's role in the mafia along with his cohorts in crime. It really was more detail than I would have liked. For all its glitz and glamor Roy ended up stashed into the trunk of his car and his body frozen. The bottom line is that there is nothing cool about being a mobster. They are thugs and nothing more.

Although cinematic portrayals of the Mafia have generated plenty of cringe-worthy moments, reading about the real-life deeds of Nino Gaggi’s murderous underlings makes the “Sopranos” appear like a series more suitable for Nickelodeon. MURDER MACHINE details the rise and fall of a Gambino-family crew that may have been responsible for up to 200 murders and how the legal system finally caught on to them. While I thought this was going to be a book exclusively about the notorious Roy DeMeo, it actually isn’t. MURDER MACHINE presents a broader perspective by illustrating DeMeo and his gang of thugs as an efficiently effective cog in the Gambino family wheel of criminal activity. The main underlying theme that runs throughout the book is the tempestuous relationship between Nino Gaggi and his nephew, Dominick Montiglio … a relationship that eventually gave law enforcement the tools necessary to shut down the “Murder Machine”.What I really liked about MURDER MACHINE is that the authors provide readers with a complete picture of Mafia serial killing. A story that starts with a patriarchal Nino Gaggi essentially stealing his nephew, Dominick, to serve as his pseudo-son and how that tenuous relationship ultimately implodes and ends with Dominick providing prosecutors the nails needed to seal the Gaggi/Demeo coffin. While the Gaggi/Montiglio team serves as bookends to the storyline; DeMeo and his crew provide the (no pun intended) “meat” in the middle. Mustain and Capeci do a good job illustrating the seedy atmosphere of New York in the 1970s that suitably caters to the criminal activity and grisly murders committed by the DeMeo gang. The detailing vividly covers events in a manner that make it easy to image the entire storyline in movie-like fashion. I particularly appreciated this aspect of the book as it thoroughly illustrates the depravity of Gaggi and DeMeo’s activities. While some may feel the minutiae bogs the story down, I considered it critical in providing the clarity needed with so many individuals and events meshing together. What separates MURDER MACHINE from so many other Mafia-related books is that it covers a particularly bloodthirsty group of men that seemed wired to kill and did so with relish. Roy Demeo angle was certainly interesting and it is clear that the man was an insecure thug without a conscience. DeMeo’s name gets all the attention, but his crew of underlings were just as bad, if not worse … and all killing was generally done with capo Gaggi’s unspoken approval. As long as the money flowed to Gaggi and his superior, Gambino boss Paul Castellano, no one seemed to care who was killed, how they were killed or how the money was made. The book eerily illustrates how the Mafia’s tendrils crept into the everyday lives New Yorkers and it didn’t just involve drugs or loan-sharking. DeMeo’s crew was responsible for stealing thousands of cars … every year. Paralleling the criminal activities is the slow creep of law enforcement linking murders to Gaggi/DeMeo and eventually building an operation to take them down by getting Mafia underlings to become witnesses for the prosecution. While murder and dismemberment are the book’s trademarks, I found the machination within the Gambino crime family and the characters involved more compelling. MURDER MACHINE continuously introduces readers to a cast of characters that keep things interesting. Aside from the insecurities of Gaggi and DeMeo, there is Dominick Montiglio, the Green Beret who fought with valor in Vietnam only to become embroiled in his uncle’s criminal empire and eventually succumbing to the debauchery associated with his uncle’s Mafia life. It is Dominick who seems to provide much of the book’s details. The other characters in the book give the stories color: Vito Arena, the obese gay hitman, the “Gemini Twins” and their enthusiasm toward dismembering victims, “Dracula” the creepy old mobster who actually lived in the apartment where the dismembering was done and a host of other interesting criminals and victims. In some cases, even friends become prey for the “murder machine”. We also get a clear picture of the guiltless lust for power and money exhibited by Mafia members and the paranoia it infuses within the ranks … no one is truly safe or invincible … as most of the characters, including DeMeo, find out.One thing I did find quite interesting is that Richard “Iceman” Kuklinski is NEVER mentioned in the 458 page book. My initial introduction to Roy DeMeo was from watching HBO’s “The Iceman Tapes” in which Kuklinski coldly places himself as a major hitman in DeMeo’s crew of killers. MURDER MACHINE either debunks Kuklinski’s claims or simply ignores his “contributions”. Considering the number of unsolved murders/missing people possibly linked to DeMeo, it is still hard to tell whether or not Kuklinski was or wasn’t involved with any of the killing. While I didn’t find MURDER MACHINE particularly “chilling”, it does reveal how ruthless the Mafia is and how indiscriminant its members can be when it comes to killing those who’ve crossed or inconvenienced them. The criminal activity and the story of those committing the crimes comprise the soul of MURDER MACHINE, not the grisly method of disposing bodies. This is certainly one of the better Mafia storylines I’ve read over the years and it seems to work hand-in-hand with the filthy, run-down image of New York City in the 70s.

...this will be my last 'mob' guy tells it all book. Not because it was bad, but because I can't imagine reading a better one. If you're like me and have paid attention to these things over the years you have probably heard about the events in this book - but, you will never find this story or any other like it told in a more riveting fashion. Could not put it down - lost sleep reading it. This chapter in modern Mob history is twisted, depraved and downright unsettling. Bravo to the authors and the depth of research that went into the telling of Murder Machine. PS - you'll think twice before you take a spin through Canarsie.

This is one gritty book and it is all true. The amount of people that Roy DeMeo killed is almost unbelievable. The story is mostly about the DeMeo mob through the eyes of Dominick Santamaria who - as a child - was brought up into "that life". I have some pity for Dom because he was taught to be that way from his uncle Nino. He never murdered anyone but was present for several and was on mafia sniper detail but never had to pull the trigger. May God have mercy on his soul as the young are the most vulnerable. Dominick was also a great soldier during Vietnam and earned a Green Beret and I admire him greatly for that. I am an Italian and for the life of me don't understand what the big attraction is to being a mug. The story was insulting to me because it gives the Italians a bad name. I have had some anti-Italian things happen to me throughout my life. That we are all involved in crime and even the brutal side of the Roman Empire was blamed on me by some co-workers. Sorry people but that as they say was a long time ago.
